I know here general surgeons won't do many surgeries (cholecystectomy, fundlipocation, hernia repairs etc) for patients with a BMI over 40. At those weights the risk of the surgeries far outweighs any possible benefits, and even if they pull through they are unlikely to make any difference as diet and weight absolutely impacts the effectiveness of these surgeries. At 300lb she definitely would have been told that she was too fat here. Unless you are doubting the gall stone diagnosis. She may not actually have the official diagnosis, but her diet would very much point to gallstones being a very likely issue for her.

Laparoscopic surgery for gallbladder removal is feasible on morbidly or super morbidly obese patients. I have no doubt she has gallstones; many obese people do.
