I'm someone who's very skeptical of the language of addiction. I don't believe that I was "born" an alcoholic or that I was destined to become one. But as stated above, I fucked up my brain chemistry to the point that I can't just drink in moderation. I could go out to lunch or dinner and have one or two, but I was getting whisky on the way home. Every day by about 2pm I was in "can't wait to get home and start drinking" mode.I'm sorry if this sounds stupid, but it's an honest question: Why is it that alcoholics seemingly always have to permanently quit drinking altogether? Why can't they simply learn to go back to moderate drinking? Is it just a matter of willpower?
There's also an element of self-loathing mixed up, at least for me. There was a point there towards the end where I was wondering if pills or heroin could do a better job of silencing the voice in my head. And when you start thinking about heroin, that's a massive red flag.
So personally, I'm just not willing to reopen that door. Maybe I'd be fine, but it's not worth the risk.
