I'm sorry if this sounds stupid, but it's an honest question: Why is it that alcoholics seemingly always have to permanently quit drinking altogether? Why can't they simply learn to go back to moderate drinking? Is it just a matter of willpower?
I'm someone who's very skeptical of the language of addiction. I don't believe that I was "born" an alcoholic or that I was destined to become one. But as stated above, I fucked up my brain chemistry to the point that I can't just drink in moderation. I could go out to lunch or dinner and have one or two, but I was getting whisky on the way home. Every day by about 2pm I was in "can't wait to get home and start drinking" mode.
There's also an element of self-loathing mixed up, at least for me. There was a point there towards the end where I was wondering if pills or heroin could do a better job of silencing the voice in my head. And when you start thinking about heroin, that's a massive red flag.
So personally, I'm just not willing to reopen that door. Maybe I'd be fine, but it's not worth the risk.

Whole lotta answers in here and not a damn one is wrong. We just can't trust ourselves that we'll only have one or two every once in a while because some of us tried that for decades and it never worked out.

The difference between a sober alcoholic and an active one is that the active one still thinks that they can trust themselves with alcohol. To internalize and accept something like that about yourself is difficult. To change your life because of it is even harder.

Call it a chemical inclination, a physical deformation, a matter of willpower or a self destructive instinct. In the end, our personal alcoholism was a unique circumstance that doesn't mirror others, but rhymes instead with others in ways only we can understand.

Itd stress out my loved ones if i had alcohol again even in moderation. I also just dont really trust myself like that either. I can be around alcohol/people with alcohol and its fine im not fiending for it anymore but if i start i tend not to stop.

I had a bad experience a couple of days ago. I was going through my liquor cabinet (yes, there's booze in my house, no, it doesn't bother me), and found a little bottle of whisky that I bought when I was in Scotland last year. I had to get my wife to hide it, as whisky is my Achilles heel.
Still thinking about that little fucker, but I'm fighting the urge to search for it.
I'm going to get my wife to give it someone so I know its not in the house, it's too good to throw away.

Dump it, dude. You know where this is gonna go.

Seems like we have a bit of a contradiction here.
It's just the whisky. Nothing else speaks to me.
Especially leading up to a weekend, because drinking whisky on a weekend morning was my favourite type of drinking.
If it gets to be an issue I know my wife would clean out the house for me.

Eh, it's all just poison technically.

A few thousand quid bottle of whisky is at its root the same thing as a bottle of the cheapest shit your local Aldi is selling. People can ramble on about "flavour notes" and all that shit but at the end of the it's all just booze. Putting this stuff on a pedestal like that is the same as junkies chasing the dealer who is selling the best quality gear at the moment.
