I don't give a shit, I have no stake in the internet, my life is offline, my hobbies are offline, they could pull the plug tomorrow and my life would go on. It's just insane to know I'm the last pre-smartphone generation, a watershed like the last pre-electricity generation and the 'good' phase of the internet was so brief that I lived through the entirety of it and I'm not even 40. The culture of the internet was so bright and optimistic and decentralized, full of good shit and good communities that its impossible to properly convey to irony poisoned zoomers, its like I'm talking about a different geological era to them. They simply cannot comprehend that things don't necessarily have to be bad, that things used to be good, that you could make different choices and not go along with the megacorp algorithms and trying to turn every online interaction into a grift.

This hit me harder in the feels than i like to admit. I am in the same boat, it really feels strange to think "This feels like another world now" when you haven't even hit your forties yet.

I saw yet another "I miss forums" post on /v/ with the usual faggot lambasting about their death when reality check the fact you use 4chan constantly is part of the reason why forums died. 4chan is just so easy to use, and no history/accounts/easy ways to track let you indulge in your worst tendencies. I cannot understand how someone could be so pathetic. To have it proven beyond any doubt that its all gay and fake and occasionally ran by literal epstein, only to go crawling back because its "more chaotic" or "has a better energy". Nothing online really ever dies as long as someone hosts it, that story about the single lone woman talking to herself on that buffy forum proves that, but to be so pathetic as to go crawling back to such a shit place, and to spend a majority of your online time there is beyond insane.

I was thinking about it today, some real, genuine 02:00 AM musings about how quick human society is. Up until the 19th century, basically every generation has lived through the same social environment, same rules, same technology, same way of life from birth to death. What you learned, what you got used to, held. It was just as useful the day you died when you learned it it as a toddler. Your parents and grandparents and generations before grew up in practically the same society too, their wisdom was good, their advice mattered, all the oral traditions and folkways of doing things were good, practical knowledge that genuinely helped your life. The elders really did know it best and you did well to listen to their experience.. And for 99.933% of human history, this was the norm. What we live in, that not only generations to generations change but decades to decades are so different to live in and you have to adapt is intensely abnormal

It's all true. I sort of wish it'd die just to break the habit for me. It's a complete shell of what it used to be in so many different ways.

They used to be ground zero for memes and stuff and now its nothing but reposts from twitter and tiktok.

They ride their free speech horse but they're probably the most ban happy website on the internet. They legitimately might be worse than reddit when it comes to bans.
