How bad will the Atlantic hurricane season be in 2021?

Ah, that makes sense. As I recall correctly from past Katrina coverage, it wasn't the winds that fucked up NOLA; it was the extreme flooding that came after. I guess we'll be seeing a double-whammy this time.
imagine taking the downfall from the storm + the right side of the storm trying to shove the gulf of mexico up your ass at the same time (because the winds are going counter clockwise, the right side wind is pushing from the gulf onto land vs the left side wind that is moving from the land out into the gulf)

I don't think they learned anything since Katrina. This is going to be very very bad.
Trust me they haven’t. The Army Corp of Engineers is still working on the improvements needed after Katrina.

Link / Archive

While a lot has been improved there are still places that have not been improved yet. All it takes is one hole and it all comes down.

Americans told to shelter in place in Afghanistan and not to escape to the airport.
Americans told to shelter in place in the Hurricane despite being 5 feet below sea level in a storm surge.
So. Who here is gonna shelter in place when told to do so in the next emergency?

They did the levees and the locks, but the pumping stations are mostly shit. So whatever flooding there is will be hard to abate. The wind damage will be tremendous, regardless. Imagine giant glass panes being ripped off of sky scrapers and shot randomly around like massive throwing knives.

This is basically why Bush refused to rebuild New Orleans. This hit was inevitable, and there will be another and another until it's toast. The heat of the water in the Gulf of Mexico is going to be giving every hurricane that passes through a quad damage powerup for the foreseeable future.

At this point, "Shelter in place" is better read as "Get the FUCK out".

Fun Fact: One lesser known eerie thing about Hurricane Katrina is that the New Orleans' 6 Flags Park was completely devastated by it and essentially left to rot. The place was entirely flooded, and there were rumors of alligators, large snakes, and other dangerous wildlife swimming around in the utterly swamped rides and attractions.

Despite there being talks of finally tearing the place down, nothing was ever done with the park, and to this day, the sign still says "Closed For Storm".

I'm pretty sure I've watched some YouTube videos about this – possibly Defunctland, or some channel that does urban exploration. But yeah, it is rather unsettling. I might be wrong, but I think the abandoned Six Flags is a hotbed for crime, too, especially drug deals.

It is too bad considering it's a city with a lot of beautiful old buildings with a rich history and culture.

Someone should build a "New New Orleans" somewhere dryer.

Maybe I'm behind the curve here, but why is the Army the one building infrastructure for a civilian town? Does New Orleans not have budgets/engineers of its own to do such things?

The Army Corps of Engineers maintain the Ohio River and Mississippi River lock and dam systems to maintain the levels for shipping. The Mississippi River empties into the gulf at New Orleans. I'm guessing the levi system is integral to the lock and dam system.

Sometimes if you procrastinate long enough, what you were supposed to take down becomes relevant again. Like Christmas lights.

So it's the carnival grounds from the killing joke?

Call the new city "New Orleans" and rename the flooded ruins of New Orleans the "New Orleans Historic District". Complete 1:1 reconstruction of the French Quarter is necessary.
Does that include the Hard Rock Casino Hotel as well?

I can hear Ida singing "Here I am! Rockin like an hurricane" now.

All major flood control and navigable waterways in the US are maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers. It is technically part of the US Army but except for senior leadership entirely civilian based. This includes the everything from sea walls in the northeast to dredging the rivers for boats. It goes back to the 1800s when one of the major thing taught in military schools was a forerunner of civil engineering.
