I'm actually reading a book of short (non-fiction) stories about cults right now and the two most common things by far that mark the transition from an eccentric utopian community to a full-blown cult are a) free love (which in practice usually means the leader tells the women they need to fuck the men he tells them to) and b) trying to break up the nuclear family by requiring parents to give their children to the cult at very young ages (like 0-4 years). While polycules are usually full of abuse and tend to have narcissists/sociopaths at their nucleus, they usually don't require any children to identify multiple people as their moms. That's a cult tactic.

Gaydens don't seem to have this obsession with stereotypical boyhood (at least, not that I've seen.)
