I'm fully expecting you to come back, at some point, and tell us that some of these very smart people have been re-using tests. At this point, it wouldn't even be the dumbest thing I've heard about this whole farce.

I mean. Aside from the protocol saying that the test had to be caught out of the sealed bag, once there's lines on the thing it should be obvious it can't be reused... But honestly. At this point. I'm not betting against it. Some days I don't understand how the hospital manages not to collapse under the weight of the personnel's own idiocy. Just... Some days unions gotta spend their time fighting asshole superiors. Some days we're just nannies for very old, very educated potatoes.

If you go out but stay clenched up and stressed the whole time, then once you return home you lecture the internet about how everyone else is being unsafe? Totally gives you immunity.
Child Protective Services takes kids all the time. The really fierce parents will sometimes take to the social media to verbally shake their fists at authority over the unfairness of it all.

Just wanted to pop in and say that you guys have been a good source of information for finding articles/pre-peer reviewed studies on this thing. A few of you have a lot of sources to go with what you say too. Really glad that you were the ones to remain and not the doom/gloom people who were very prevalent when I last posted here. I used to be more in the "just the flu" camp, but you guys have shown that it is worse than that, but certainly not the worst thing we have dealt with.

Good news everyone! I just tested negative for Kung Flu. Turns out it was probably just good old, God fearing American flu. So I'm feeling a lot better about life. Still extremely tired, but getting better.

So Cailifornia has now stated they are raising an "army" to track down possible infections and will rip people out of their homes. Children included.
Absolute lunacy and it will not end well.

I am not a doctor nor a medical lab technician, but that test looks like a CHEAP CHINESE PIECE OF SHIT. Holy fuck, the piss tests at Walmart that soccer moms use to check their kids for marijuana look more robust and reliable than that.

I'm glad you prioritized those two items correctly.
Took a member of the silent generation out for the first time in two months, with doc approval and both of us were masked. Geriatric doctors are seeing a decline in their patients because of these quarantines/lockdowns. Lack of exercise, routine, social interaction, etc. has had a negative impact on their health physically and mentally. It makes me wonder if "saving" their lives may end up shortening them in the long run.
The outing didn't last long, but it made this individual happy. As far as people wearing masks around here in this southern pit stop state, it's about 30/70, but I think that has to do with a lack of available masks, along with a dose of southern rebellion.

Poland today: +324/+22/+207 new cases/deaths/recoveries. Which neatly nullifies yesterday's reduction in active cases. Sigh. Round and round it goes.
I have a question about testing and would love if someone with educated insight could answer. Are there any reliable indicators that would show if you're keeping up? My country has performed 426 thousand tests so far. In absolute numbers, that's the seventh or so result in the European Union (but far behind the leaders). In numbers per million, it's among the lowest. But the percentage of positive samples out of total tested samples is 3.50%, which in turns seems to be comparatively very low (it's anywhere from 10-20% in hard-hit Western and Southern European countries like Italy, Spain, UK, Belgium, also Sweden; 6% for Germany, 5% for Austria, no clue about France because their data is hopelessly obsolete). Don't know what to watch out for.

we joke about Weaponized Autism around here, but most people never realize that Medicine, particularly MD’s are old school Weaponized Autists. They tend to be extremely smart, in their narrow domains. But lack anything resembling God Given Common Sense that the average automotive mechanic or Fast Food Drive Through Attendant. has. If the sign on a door says “Push” at least 6 out of 10 MD’s will be pulling. While loudly complaining that the door is doing it wrong, because he’s the Doctor!

To be fair most finger prick tests look cheapo AF. They're single use pieces of plastic anyway. But yeah this one also ACTS cheapo. Which is really, really fucking bad.
There isn't even any measure for "keeping up." If you've already tested the strong suspects and risk groups. And there's some spare for screening. Any spare. And the screening is coming back mostly negative. And the tests aren't made in china. Then it's more than enough. If the tests are chinese, then you might as well roll the fucking dice instead. If there's no spare it's not enough. And if the screening is coming mostly positive then boy do you have a much larger issue than you think... but yeah Poland's doing enough.

This made me laugh out loud earlier when I read it.

All of Eastern Europe seems to have low rates just now.
My theory: There seems to have been a short period of time where the infection was seeded explosively and amplified in very specific areas. In Italy it was ski resorts. In the UK that was entry via Heathrow, and things like the Cheltenham (horse racing) festival. In sweden you see Stockholm hit hard but other cities which you’d think would be hit not doing as badly. My contact there says that each region has a slightly differently timed late winter sport break in Feb, like our half term break. Stockholm’s break coincided with the peak of transmission in the italian alp ski resorts. Other cities has theirs a week or two earlier and I think have had fewer of those initial seeding events.
What that says to me is that this may actually be less transmissible under some circumstances. We seem to be seeing areas which had travel during that critical late jan/mid Feb period hit the hardest. Eastern Europe may just have been lucky, or it may not have been as connected somehow during that critical period. Either way, fewer initial seeding cases got there during that period and then they shut down hard.
So I think what we are seeing is social distancing, Stopping mass gatherings and a few restrictions is enough to put the brakes on this thing. Lockdowns were not needed. I can understand why Italy did it, they were in a mess. But everywhere else, I will bet you that it’ll turn out to be a minor effect only. Stopping mass gatherings and basic hygiene/distancing will be the big ones.
It does raise the spectre of later infections in countries with low initial spread - i suspect this is one reason why Africa hasn’t been a hotbed so far. They’ve just not had that critical mass of travel to areas which were centres of infection during that critical period
I think it was @RodgerDodger a few pages back who said that they didn’t expect the route into America to be via Italy. Over here it’s more obvious in retrospect, because of that half term break where middle class families get package deals to the alps, but I wouldnt have flagged alpine resorts as being the amplification point for a virus from China at all.
I guess it shows how small areas can be huge drivers of infection. It’s going to be fascinating to retrace it all once it’s over.

Most likely on the supermarket. Infected by the family member that goes to supermarket. Due to post. Etc. "Hiding at home" isn't really fully isolating. And if everyone is doing it, statistically, most infected will. Plus the ones that aren't have strong reasons to lie and say they were doing it anyway.

My answer was an unironic "if everyone jumps off a cliff will you jump too?" And another attempt at explaining them that the finger hole. Is indeed. For fingers. But I think they're gonna keep doing it this way. I... My disappointment is unmeasurable, and my day is ruined. These are doctors, people, DOCTORS. @Roger Dodger is so right about the tism. God why.
I mean really. We were sent there to try and investigate why they were having so much trouble with a test that's supposed to be immediate and easy. And before he even explains anything I just immediately spot that, somehow, pippetes have suddently entered the testing method. What was I even supposed to say? I found the issue. I don't even know why pippetes are being used. But I know they shouldn't be!
