Left Wing have been controlling the media since at least 2008, and really closer to 2004/2005. It was just a more subtle and nuanced control before they went full re.tard around 2015, which itself was just an acceleration of 2011/2012 Obama reelection shilling.

9/11 bought the right a couple of years of immunity from the media. But the lunatic left didn't start reclaiming the media until 2005 and Hurricane Katrina happened. And you had Keith Olberman on MSNBC, basically mainstreaming the Daily Show formula for prime time cable news and making money for the struggling network.

I know I didn’t know much about gamergate until I found threads discussing it here, I was gonna vote for the most un-Obama person who ran. Though I think the major impact it had was getting the press to overreact. They pulled out the big guns getting every paper to pen screeds against nerds who were mad about some nerd drama to try to crush it out of existence because it hurt their pride by resisting. Then everyone else started asking “wait, why is every press organ treating this nerd drama like it’s a massive deal? Why is this random chick who I’ve never heard of at the United Nations crying about mean tweets and video games?”
In their zeal to crush some intractable but minor upset that everyone would have forgotten about in a week if they stopped talking about it with the full weight of their media empire, they lost any ability to conceal said empire.

In the wake of Gamergate happening, it was widely speculated that the move to squash Gamergate was an example of the lunatic left that had co-opted the media, pulling a "don't let a crisis go to waste" lateral move.

Going back to the JournoList scandal, the left wing media had been pissed off that they were caught trying to rig the media coverage of things with a pro-Obama slant. They also knew Hillary was going to get the nomination and the right would go in for the kill, day one of the campaign. Gamergate was people involved in JournoList and their fellow travelers doing two things:

1. Burying a story that exposed mass media corruption, as a "Never Again Will We Let Our Sins Be Exposed, Or the People Exposing Our Sins Go Unpunished!!!!" type holy war, especially since....

2. They had been slowly build their own version of the infamous Gundam Victory doomsday device the Halo Drive, to wipe out from orbit ANYONE that opposed them through an ultra organized smear campaign/gaslighting campaign.

Gamergate ended being the perfect chance for them to test out their Halo Drive device on nerds, who they never thought would fight back or that by doing so, they would inadvertedly expose what they were planning to do for Hillary, allowing Trump and his cohorts to see the gameplans and prepare accordingly by way of calling out the media for their bullshit.

Look at Rathergate. A small news story dunking on Bush became a triumph of citizen journalism and a symbol of a biased and incompetent mainstream media.

Rathergate was different in that Dan Rather thought he had had W dead to rights but it turned out the entire thing was one huge honeypot that the Bush administration had led Rather into and basically won flawless victory destroying Rather's credibility and getting him fired.

Journalists are STILL fucking butt-hurt that W and Cheney played Rather like a chump and fucked him so badly that they destroyed his career AND got away with it with zero consequences. Among the left, especially Rachel Maddow, Rather's fall from grace is something that is one of her chief motivators for why she hates and seeks to destroy the GOP.
