I dont know how to feel, i'm pissy about it because I have a living pokedex and 4 boxes of shinies I want with me at all times. Thinking about it more, I'm sore about it but I'm totally fine with it being a post game thing at some point... I like Wooloo but honestly none of what I've seen so far has me terribly interested.

I think I'm just frustrated, I've more or less played pokemon exclusively my entire life, just branched out last year with the switch and ps4. Breath of the wild has shown me what the switch is capable of and red dead 2 has shown me what amazing games looks like, I don't need pokemon to be either of these but it just seems so lazy in comparison. They've had all the models- 807 pokemon (not including meltan and new gens) and main character is copy paste, can customize whatever you want. They keep making new gimmicks and immediately abandoning them for more gimmicks they'll also abandon while people have been pretty honest about what they've wanted- buddy pokemon, entire new dex of content, no fire/fighting starter, and nostalgia. They hyper focus on the nostalgia but also announce not all nostalgia is going to be in game which is stupid. If so many pokemon were going to be a problem then they should've stopped making more of them when it started becoming a problem.

I know I'm getting older and my tastes are changing, so I don't matter, but it's kind of sad to see them do pokemon like this. Every other game was instant buy for me but I'm having serious doubts based on what I've seen of this so far and how much I've disliked gen 7. I know I'll end up buying it but I'm probably going in with low expectations, I'm prepared to eat these words if I end up liking, I hope I do, but I'm not convinced yet.

They weren't going to let me import good Pokemon from previous editions on my first playthrough so it doesn't change a thing for me and how I play the game. As long as certain mandatory Pokemon are included (Smeargle and Ditto come to mind) it doesn't matter.

The Sun and Moon meta was more interesting before they opened up the entire National Dex anyway.

I’m not that informed about newer Pokemon games but Corviknight already is my nigga. Finally, a cool looking raven mon AND it’s my favourite steel type? Sorry Murkrow but I don’t like your cartoon yellow beak or that you randomly evolve into a mafia boss that looks nothing like a crow.

Never have I been so thankful I gave up on a franchise years ago. It's very clear that this was a deliberate choice. But why?

The entire shebang implies some distressing things, not the least of which is that Pokemon's getting Madden'd from now on: Yearly edition updates, and this is on top of trying to make trading and breeding harder to do each edition to kill off the competitive circuit.

But I think the biggest (and most likely) scenario is that they're probably going to shut down Bank soon. For the uninitiated, Bank had basically been used as an overglorified self-trade service, not as long-term Pokemon storage like they wanted (in no small part because Nintendo made clear your shit got deleted if your payments lapsed). So they'd pay for one month, transfer shit to Sun or Moon, and that'd be it. If you're an oldschooler, your collection is easily maintained or centralized on whatever game you have (backed up in multiples, even, if you got a flash cart).

The thing is, Game Freak doesn't make money off that. At least not recurrent revenue.

So they are likely cancelling Bank and making Home the only game in town as far as Pokemon storage outside the specific games. Switch games store local and don't allow backups except via the cloud (which Game Freak can disallow), so this basically would mean that Game Freak has complete control over what can and can't be in going forward. Since Game Freak has come out and said they're flat-out not putting every Pokemon in upcoming editions, and only letting you use ones they specifically detail you can, this forces players to use Home, since they won't be able to headquarter their pokemon on titles that don't support them.

It looks like a cashgrab to me, but I suppose it remains to be seen what ultimately comes of it. Glad I'm not a fan.

Besides, why is no-one mad at Digimon games for never having every single "main" one?
As someone who is currently playing a digimon game I couldn't tell you what digimon was what, I just kind of nod my head and say "Yeah, sure". The digimon evelutions are out there, I just turned an ice goblin into that scooby doo cyber chase virus ffs. Is it hypocritical? probably. There are so many different versions of Agumon, a few of Gatomon, and then they can turn into like 4 different things which can also turn into other things.

Pokemon goes three evolution's max minus the occasional mega evo but they're pretty easy to tell who belongs with who. I'm not saying Digimon should cut anyone out but I can understand why they'd want to.

To the surprise of literally no one, tumblr is having a stroke over the new water type gym leader, Nessa, wearing a bikini that is "too sexual" and "muh Gamefreak is always sexualizing muh peeohsee."

That's why they should just go back to semi-sprite style - fitting 1000-ish 3D models in one game is not easy. Besides, why is no-one mad at Digimon games for never having every single "main" one?
Digimon is a total clusterfuck. @Ido is right, plus there’s shit like the 7 deadly sins personified as Digimon along with mons based on Olympian gods, kami, the Chinese zodiac, etc. Satan exists in this franchise and he has enough forms to count on your hands. Digimon not only have black versions (literally just a black colour scheme), they have X versions (X being some program virus thing in the lore that means X versions are stronger and edgier looking), toy versions (they look like Legos), more shit I’m definitely forgetting...

It really doesn’t help that separate Digimon can combine already AND have crossing evolutionary lines. It’s not easy to separate them into generations or seasons either. I loved Digimon to death as a kid but this is why it never stuck beyond childhood besides my spergy nostalgia for the Adventure anime.

because the tag line for digimon wasn't "gotta catch them all." It's less about collecting them and more about raising your specific agumon into becoming a god-king.

"muh Gamefreak is always sexualizing muh peeohsee."
and I bless them for it.

Do they not realize the other gym leader and the champion were both wearing some kind of sportswear, and real life female athletes do dress like that? Maybe 'poc' women should have to wear burkas to compete in athletics, that'll solve the problem at the source.

So I figured out why Game Freak is doing this. Masuda, in interviews, is talking about "animation quality", and "balance", but that's all excuses to mask the real issues. I mean, really, THIS is what you'd call "quality animations"?

But no, the real issue isn't this. The real issue is the thing that's made very clear in this video right here:
You see that Steelix popping in? Notice how the smoke and black hole effects above appear WITH IT. That's not its own thing, that's a part of the model. Every single Dynamax'd Pokémon has its own, oversized model, and I think THAT is why Game Freak is cutting on Pokémon, because otherwise they have to make a model for EVERY Dynamax'd Pokémon, resulting in a ton of bloat and not fitting in any Switch cartridge or the console itself.

This isn't a first time thing for Game Freak. In Sun and Moon there's the fact that the game encrypts and decrypts whenever it's generating Pokémon during encounters (Archive). Not only that but models, textures, everything, are in the files for EVERY location they are in (Archive), so if a character, like Lillie, is on Route 1 and 2, both Route 1 and 2's files include Lillie's model, instead of her model existing once for the entire game.

This is the kind of thing that Iwata fixed when he helped Game Freak compress Johto during the development of Gold and Silver, allowing them to include all of Kanto properly. This was in 1999. Game Freak hasn't learned how to compress in over 20 years now. Game Freak is Japan's Bethesda. Junichi Masuda is Japan's Todd Howard.

EDIT: By the way, /r/Pokemon (Archive) is still burning over this:

Considering the new region’s based on the UK, it would at least be accurate.
There are so many light skinned characters wearing swim wear in these games and now it's suddenly a problem because it's a dark skinned character?
Phoebe from the Hoenn Elite Four was a POC and she was in swimwear. Don’t remember anyone shitting their pants over that, but it was pre-Tumblr.

EDIT: Just got a look at the outfit in question. This is Nessa;

So what you're saying is that Pokemon games are coded just like Yandere Simulator, and it's an utter miracle that they work at all? What the actual fuck...
