It was always an enthusiast press though, in the past if someone could play through a game and in a timely manner write a text/review that was on point and didn't give the editor seizures trying to work out what it meant then that someone had a foot in the door. So in the past gamejournos were like models(ok, hear me out on this one) in that it didn't require academic credentials or even a high school diploma to become big in a profession with some visibility. They were unqualified jobs but if someone could hack it they could do well enough or advance their careers into some other part of the games industry(Patrik Södergren who recently left EA started in gaming as a writer for the official Swedish Nintendo magazine, nice career trajectory).

These days gamejournos are like the millions of instagram models, it's just online thottery and attention grabbing with no real way to go from there, no career progression. Instagram thots can at least do some hooking(honorable mention: Zoe) but what about people like Grayson? He appears to be a bit above the rim of competence at Kotaku but he's stuck in an unqualified job with no way of advancing his career or parleying it into something different, something almost entirely caused by him and his colleagues nuking their own field and making themselves radioactive.

No wonder he and so many others are pissed and feel threatened, they're stuck on a ledge and down is the only way to get off of it. Whatever Kotaku is paying him will be more than the only jobs he's qualified to get in the blue collar workforce where people actually have to work for a living.

One thing I think is worth mentioning is that 2008-2012 was a boom period when it came to games going mainstream. Braid was just one of many Xbox Live Arcade games. Steam was getting off the ground. The Wii was super popular. Smart phones were becoming ubiquitous leading to hits like Angry Birds becoming overnight successes. Games were cool and popular. They were the medium of the future.

David Gallant once admitted that he only got into game development because he saw some indie game devs in his home town and wanted to be cool just like them.

By 2014 they saw games as lame and gross because these stupid nerds are stinking up the place. Social Justice was the new fad dejour and these gamers were having none of it. But as you guys mentioned, it was too late to change careers then.

During the Game Journos Pro leak, most of the journos there hated YouTubers for taking away their audience. In their minds they were the legitimate press and these YouTubers were just nobodies with a webcam.

At one point for the gamers that really wanted to go to E3, it was also a viable strategy to get a part-time shift at a GameStop and get access that way; one or two clerks per store with the financial means to go were sent to get insider perspective on upcoming games that would help drive pre-order sales goals. I remember a few clerks bragging about getting to go roughly 10 years ago.
