Boseman was dull as ditchwater as T'Challa, but I don't think it was his fault; there was nothing to sink his teeth into with the character. He just wants to be (and is, for the most part) The Good King, while all the interesting stuff goes to Killmonger and Klaw. There was no sense that he was actively disengaged from the whole thing, just that he was doing his best with a character that starts the movie practically perfect in every way.

If I was unclear I don't necessarily think it was Boseman's fault that his character was incredibly bland. Without having seen him in any other movies I can remember offhand, it's hard for me to speculate if the underlying issue was the actor, the director or the writer, or some combination of the above.

Captain Marvel is of course the same open question in that regard, with the only other Larson role I'm familiar with being her bit part in Scott Pilgrim. It's possible that with a better director or with a better writer she'd have been able to do more with the character (and they could have used butt padding to hide her horrible deformity from audiences, I suppose). Avengers will probably be a good indication of where blame for the problems with Captain Marvel ought to be placed.

Has there been any really solid origin movies besides Iron Man and Guardians? Captain Americas has been retroactively decided to be good but when that came out I remember it being the weakest received out of all of them. Ant-Man gets written off because it's the more blatant comedy of them all and I recall Dr Strange being roughly as well received as CM.

I can't recall any besides those aforementioned two being considered very good origin stories for their characters.

I think Ant-Man was generally pretty well received although Michael Peña stole the show there. I can't really imagine them doing much better with such a dumb premise and a D-list character no one has ever heard of outside the comics community.

Captain America and Thor were both thoroughly average and it was an accidental oversight leaving Doctor Strange off my earlier list of boring Disney-Marvel missteps - like Boseman's Black Panther, Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange works much better as a supporting character the way he was used in Thor 3.

I loved Captain America up to the point where he rescues Bucky and the other captured soldiers. After that it becomes a rushed mess that completely wastes both Red Skull and Hugo Weaving. I thought Ant-Man was solid.

I would rather watch an adaption of this Captain Marvel

Ghostbusters 2016 and Ocean's 8 didn't make a profit.

You guys still forgetting that Endgame boosted this movie right?

It is possible Ocean's 8 might have actually been profitable. It's listed production budget was $70 million, though I guess a degree of cynicism might be warranted, given that Sandra Bullock has made $20 million by herself for certain movies. But on paper, profitable.

I see the hardcore anti-Captain Marvel sphere is at the bargaining stage of grief.
Damn, and I thought they were one of the less culture war involved movie channels (seeing how many Fembusters videos they made, I'm probably wrong). Then again they did use to have Mundane "trigger the libs, own the libs" Matt as a guest.

Andre (the dude who narrated the video) usually is better at staying out of it but RobotSchlomo and whatshisname are only marginally less obsessed with the culture war than dudes like the Quartering.

Meh, I saw CM recently. It was better than the early Thor movies, which were easily the shittiest of the modern MCU. It wasn't great though. CM just comes off very aloof and not relatable or likeable. In fairness, that may be an accurate presentation of the character since I never read the source material.

The only big fem-shit moments I noticed wereevery peripheral, plot-device male character was a cartoonish caricature of misogyny: her father, every military guy from her past, the motorcycle rider, etc. It was lazy and eyeroll-inducing, but whatever. Larson also lacked on-screen chemistry with everyone besides maybe her friend's daughter.

Overall, I had no problem paying for a run of the mill capeshit action movie. Wonder Woman was much better.

In a semi-related note, I caught a chunk of FemBusters on TV this weekend. It was aggressively unfunny. I've found at least 3 of the 4 actresses funny in other roles, so Paul Feig should probably be kept away from any valuable IP for life.

EDIT: changed confusing wording.

China thinks Captain Marvel isn’t attractive enough

Amazing how movies that are self consciously Woke and marketed as such are received in China.

“I’m not judging a person by their looks,” writes a commenter that is about to judge a person on their looks, “but the main character in a superhero movie shouldn’t be a ‘da ma’” -- a derogatory term for middle-aged housewives

And there are plenty of people defending the film’s choice of Brie Larson.

“Why must the superheroes look sublimely beautiful? This face looks tough. It’s exactly what Captain Marvel calls for,” wrote one Weibo user.

Another said, “I wish we can all avoid double standards. Is Tony Stark young? Is he well-built? Do you all like him because of his muscles?”

Still, it seems like Captain Marvel’s momentum isn’t as strong in China as it is in the US. While the blockbuster dominated the American box office for two weekends in a row, in China it lost the top spot to Taiwanese romance More Than Blue -- a tearjerker about two star-crossed lovers.

Will Brie say she doesn't care what a bunch of slant-eyed ching chongs think about her appearance? ?

The movie just made them hungry;

But there was one thing almost everyone agreed on: The cat stole the show. This is the most liked comment on Tudou:

“You know that feeling when you left the theater at 2:30 am after watching Captain Marvel, and you bumped into an orange cat in the corridor?”

I mean they put the fucking cat on posters. Nothing says "bankable star" like "yeah, and the cat was great too! I really liked how the CAT performed in this movie!"

Ant-Man was shit but it had the family angle, Dr. Strange was shit but it had the whoa trippy visuals man, Captain Marvel was shit but... it had a cat? I dunno. I think they're running out of excuses for these shit movies. Maybe they oughta make some good ones for a while.

No agenda to be pushed! Nothing to see here, folks! /sarc

As long as Captain Marvel's stank doesn't ruin Endgame for me, I'm good. If the MCU is going to turn to being woke garbage, then at least give me my final movie to enjoy. The MCU won't be getting my money any longer if this is the direction they want to take.

I can't believe that the whole narrative of "Disney is lying about CM's box office numbers!" is still being pushed by some of these anti-SJW channels. There is no proof or evidence of such, and pictures of "empty theaters" on Twitter don't mean a damn thing.

The movie definitely exceeded my expectations with its box office numbers, whether I like it or not. To quote Mark Hamill, though, "Remember kids: It doesn't matter if it's any good, as long as it makes money ..."
