FWIW, Waid going radio silent is at least circumstantial evidence that something is afoot at Marvel. Given what's been documented about him, it's extremely unlikely he went into lockdown of his own free will.

This. A screeching bozo like this just doesn't go suddenly silent for no reason. Either he's realized he's in deep shit on his own initiative (and I have explained why I think that is unlikely), or someone in a position to tell him to STFU told him to STFU.

I'm not basing this on that 4chan post, which is quite possibly just fiction based on these externalities we all can see. That's a very standard practice on 4chan, to pretend to be an insider while presenting some personal interpretation of publicly available facts. I've done that myself for shits and giggles.

Heck, Waid owns up to the phone call. His Bleeding Cool interview makes it very clear that he's proud that he got to throw his weight around. He's not radio silent of his own free will.

I don't know, because while I'm aware that he apparently called up the publisher and gave them a "friendly reminder" (obviously autistic), apparently now we're running with the theory that "Oh fuck guys, marvels infuriated, he put them in enormous legal trouble and shit is getting hot and heavy... oh man they think they're gonna have to throw him out immediately before real serious lawsuits come up from this...".

Do you know why people think that? A post on 4chan said it totally happened.

That someone just went to /co/ and made up a story hasn't slowed the idea that "Holy fuck fellas, major fucking happens!" are going down in the slightest. And bringing up the idea that maybe that didn't happen, and to maybe wait and see before getting all amped up for the great SJW Purge of 2018, is autistic.

Which ok, have at it. But this wouldn't be the first supposed huge ___-gate with industry-changing consequences over the past few years...

The “friendly reminder” that he himself openly admits to in interviews and social media postings, is the problem. It’s called tortious interference. It’s a huge no no. That is direct and unquestioned civil liability. And you never ever see it laid out as openly and publicly as a Waid did here. Now add to this Waid is a known and public employee of Marvel Conics. The largest competitor of Antarctic Press. Waid just committed tortious interference as an employee of Marvel/Disney against a small competitor and a producer. That’s an FTC violation. That gets into well trodden century old Anti-Trust laws. So well understood that Disney has a very clear plain language guide that clearly says in no uncertain terms “do not do this very specific thing! Ever!” That Waid just did. And it is something that Disney will take far more seriously than any other internet slap fight, because the laws that Waid unquestionably broke here are among the rare ones that can breach the Corporate Shield and hold individual corporate officers and employees to personal civil and criminal responsibility. And once again Waid did this in public. It’s completely insane. That “friendly reminder”? You can’t do that. It is in fact racketeering. It’s the old “nice business you have here. Sure would be a shame if something were to happen to it...” dance. And Waid cannot plead ignorance. He is an employee of Marvel comics, therefore an employee of the Walt Disney Company. And Disney’s mandatory company wide Ethics and Standards policies, training and employee manuals address what Waid did letter and verse, as ax”do not ever do this.” Waid violates an entire chapter of the Disney employee handbook.

Don't all these guys DFE every time someone gives them a black eye on social media?
If he's still gone in a month maybe something's up.

He kept his mouth shut through two school shootings. That's heroic restraint by these tools' standards.

Amazingly Dan Scott seems to have gotten the message when the management changed. He got off twitter and has pretty much stayed there. Not surprisingly his work product improved once he did that. Waid failed to get the message the first two times. He’s not going to get it now. If Waid is off Twitter for more than a week it means he has been forcibly chained up in the storage closet. Or Bob Iger simply had him buried in the foundation at Star Wars land. Alongside the corpse of Jar Jar Binks.

Oh.
In case he gets fired, just for everyone to have something for a potential meme...

Cool, and we'll see where things are a month from now. I have my theory on where shit's headed, I'm interested to see if I'll be wrong.

But that aside; most of you get super psyched when "culture war" shit happens, yes or no?

I think at this stage it's pretty clear he's already snapped, the only reason he hasnt stormed around to Meyers house is because Satan said he can't.

That's the face of a man who knows where the windowless tiled room with a floor drain is under Sleeping Beauty's castle.

Do tell us where this shit is headed. I really haven't been following this whole MTG/Comics kerfuffle, so I'd like to hear an alternative point of view.

While I agree with most of what you wrote, my big question is: is Waid an employee of Marvel Comics/Disney and did he hold himself out as one when he contacted Antarctic Press?

As I understand it, Marvel and DC go to great pains to ensure that most of their creators are considered freelancers (i.e. contractors). For the most part, only editors and other folks who work in the front office are actually salaried employees, while most writers and artists are paid page rates to do the work that is assigned to them. Without going into all the details, contractors generally have no say in the policies of the corporate entity for whom they work and are simply paid to do a job, where that job may or may not continue on an ongoing basis.

As I've said before, it's been a long time since I paid attention to Waid but, the last I heard, he was the editor-in-chief or publisher or something of Kaboom Comics (or maybe Boom Comics?) and, as an officer of that company, any statements he makes or actions he takes could well be traced back to that company as a whole. However, if Waid is just a freelancer at Marvel, he would not be permitted to hold himself out as a spokesperson for Marvel and, if he did so when he contacted Antarctic, then he could well be in trouble with the House of Mouse for overstepping his boundaries.

Agency law is a funny thing and sometimes even an independent contractor can bind a principal or as may be the case here (who the hell really knows at this point) act in a way where the principal incurs liability for their actions.

It's very fact specific and not cut and dry at all.

Do tell us where this shit is headed

Fire up them "Autistic" ratings boys! I'm going in;

* Nothing will come of the FTC complaint. Waid will quietly reappear on social media in the coming weeks, my estimation is before the Summer is over

* Meyers will release his comic in a limited capacity, several independents will stock the book and he will see a brief surge in sales from right-wing blogs, though most sales will come via already sold Kickstarter backers. He will refer back to the thousands of backers from the Kickstarter as accumulative sales, and will cite that as the number of "debut sales" when the book drops and refer to himself as a best seller, comparing his sales to whatever also drops that month and using that as an example he "beat the industry" by besting their sales. He will not acknowledge the fact that the KS campaign was spread across several months.

* He will likely not see chain-store sales. He may see one of two branches willing to help, but he will likely not see it put in their systems across the board. He will blame his "blackballing" for it.

* SJW Marvel will proceed for a brief period before wrapping up most series. As this has already started it can be reasonably assumed that by years end, most of the books will have concluded their runs. Meyers, personally, will take credit for this happening, and "Comicsgate" at large will agree.

* Like Waid, none of the rest of the SJW writers will see any repercussions for their actions, and the majority of them will not have left the industry. Little news will be made of the attack on Meyers or his fans.

* A middling success though a success none the same, Meyers will have claimed victory for, technically, publishing a book despite having war declared on him. Not unlike MagicGate, once it becomes obvious that no legal action or PR disasters result from Comicgates, most of the posters here will change their tunes and claim they never expected anything to happen, didn't even think it would happen, and all agree that the entire ordeal was simply about him releasing his own book. Also like MagicGate, occasional and random remarks by posters will tag me in comments referencing how totally infuriated I got all those months ago, but as a whole most people will simply drop the topic and just pretend they weren't that invested in it to begin with. Keeping with the spirit of MagicGate, I will pepper in the occasional joke about how that great big battle against the SJWs that didn't amount to anything.

* A new front in the SJWs will start, probably something music related. Most of the posters involved now will jump into that headfirst, learning nothing, and reacting poorly to any suggestion of suspicion or approaching it with a sense of humor.

Screencap this so when Marvel is sued for thousands and thousands of dollars I can look the fool, just like when Hasbro was publicly disgraced and Jeremy Hambly shot right to YouTube superstardom!

Interesting points.
I suspect that ya boi Zach will not use all of his Kickstarter money to print copies of his comic.
Instead, he will print enough copies to send to all his backers and then pocket the rest, blaming the boycott/conspiracy against him when people ask why the comic isn't in stores.
I'm not saying Zach will do that, I'm saying that's what I would have done.

Yes but let's be fair; a lot of people inserting themselves in this are really, really stupid;

Know how in the middle of all those autism meltdowns, I say things referring to "keeping perspective", things like that? Pic related is why...
Those are people on twitter. Everyone on twitter is a sped. Are people here getting a little too optimistic and hopeful about the fallout of this possible lawsuit? Yes, definitely. But the proper response to that isn't to just go, "Nothing you hope is going to happen will, everything is going to suck forever and everybody is a douchebag, fuck you for having hope."

There's one approach, here's another;

What happened when Metokur and Sargon had their spat? Who argued what? Carl debated that there should always be a bigger picture to the shitposting, that mockery needed to accomplish something and to simply float around just reacting to things with pointing and laughing was pointless and nihilistic.

Our good friend Jim had a different viewpoint; "Holy shit what do you think you're accomplishing? Look at yourself for fucks sake...".

Now when this happened, keep in mind Sargon wasn't considered the faggot by a wide margin, indeed some actually insisted it was Jim who had the inferior mindset. "What does Jim believe?!", they would ask, because merely laughing and joking at shit didn't accomplish anything. These are issues to be concerned about, and there he is, just giggling like an idiot! Flash forward to now. Which of those two guys would you say won? Who maintained their dignity, and who ended up looking a bit foolish? What happened since that spat, who did what that could have affected their reputations in such a way?

A more detailed version of my point of view can be found in the Zoe Quinn thread, when GamerGate comes up. A rundown, GG more or less accomplished a lot, if not "won", due in part to a very good sense of humor, and keeping some perspective. SJWs were the ones losing their shit, not the Anons. The Anons knew they couldn't afford spilling but so much spaghetti, they'd look like idiots. And indeed, for a long time, the spaghetti remained safely in their pockets!

But then something happened, and it pops up a lot here but I've timestamped it at 24:00 because that's the meat of the topic. No no, no jokes. This is serious business! This is fucking WAR! People got their shit together, people got serious and god-dammit they're gonna let the world know just what's at stake and we're gonna buckle down and this is fuckin' it fellas! Chaaaaaaaaaaaaarge!

And it looks faggy. It looks dumb as shit. It looks like the exact opposite of what worked before. And, naturally, as someone who digs people getting way too serious about people getting gung-ho about relatively pointless shit, laughs are going to be had.

Now is this all just a verbose smokescreen, and am I really just incredibly mad and trying to deflect from how mad I am? Maybe! Let's find out how this unfolds and who ends up looking better in the end. History tends to favor a certain approach, though.
