Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

IBO is unfiltered dogshit and it's only praised by retards because le hecking barbie rex is cool haha lole. Everyone in the story is a retard, damn near everyone dies in pointless and stupid ways, and nothing actually mattered in the end. It suffers from being the entry point for a decent amount of people so they like it because they have to, it was their first Gundam show. I think it also gets a lot of residual hype from actually having quite the strong start, as that's where IBO is at it's best. That it squandered that strong start contributes to it being so shit, too. In any case, fucking terrible inclusion in a "best Gundam shows" list, especially when it was included there as a counter to general Tomino nihilism when it's one of the most miserable show filled with pointless deaths out of the entire franchise.
Yeah thinking on it I stand thoroughly corrected

and nothing actually mattered in the end.
That's not a bad thing, the game was rigged from the start for those kids. IBO is a decent Gundam when you compare with shit like Age and Reconguista. I don't understand the divide IBO causes with fans.

I agree Gundam can't make a decent movie - 00 is dogshit with the "unite for aliums!" message, and CCA is impressive but rushed as fuck. I'm not even gonna mention how F91 was wasted potential: the movie; it should have been a 6-episode OVA series at least. Sunrise should pull a Demon Slayer and make a series finale as a movie, just one bigass episode to tie all the knots at the end.

Wing is nostalgic but VERY dumb, it's the weakest of the 3 90's AUs. X had better characters/potential and G is mindless fun. Wing's success is the good ol' case of "baby's first Gundam" + fujoshis.

Tomino thinks too highly about himself, sometimes he has good ideas and sometimes he really believes he can be all philosophical - and the results can be either cool, hilarious, or trash. Nowadays he is like George Lucas: keep him away from his franchise, please. Every time he tries something it ends up being Temu Turn A, and his 'message' is as enigmatic as the amount of meds he takes every morning.

UC is good, the real problem is how ZZ shaped EVERYTHING after. The first half of ZZ is dogshit, you can safely skip two thirds of it and not lose anything of value. The second half has so much shit going on it will affect any story made after. Stardust Memory at least was a "stealthy" conflict, not a full scale war. Anything about UC after ZZ needs to take that series into account, and it constrains the narrative greatly. Also, let's not forget how Tomino tried to kill the series with Victory, a future so bleak it basically erases everything that happened before. I guess that's why he hates Unicorn.

Lastly, ANIMATE CROSSBONES YOU STUPID FUCKS, NOBODY ASKED FOR GQUUUX AND THE FEMINISTS OF MERCURY.

About time for my bi-annual post to this thread I think.

Where do you guys get your anime/manga opinions or news from? Asking because I've stumbled across a few manga that sound interesting, but trying to look up opinions on them gets me a mix of "fuck" and "all".

I assume this is because these manga fall on the fanservice/ecchi side of the fence. And what little I do find the reviews are either "10/10 cos titties" or "0/10 cos titties". I'm also relying pretty much on word of mouth or Amazon recommendations for discovery, which is far from ideal.

Are there any manga/anime that is a good fit for the 80s-90s action era? Hot babes are not required but a welcome bonus. Things like Bubblegum Crisis, Riding Bean, Burn Up, Gunsmith Cats, etc. I didn't care for Black Lagoon, and the few other examples were supposedly not good. I still have Agent Aki and Silent Mobius to work through, but then I might need fresh stuff. There was a manga with "death" in the title I can't find, something about a man who can see criminals at a glance.

The curse that is Mari Okada's writing. You could stop at season one and not let the disappointment hit in season two.

I just read them and judge for myself. It's difficult to find reviews that are consistent, because most tend to gradually act morally superior when it comes to that sort of content or genre or are annoying with their "TIDDIES LOL" takes. Miami Guns is a fun series, Think of a less wacky Excel Saga. Grenadier is action with a babe in the lead. Agent Akia is strictly fanservice and fun fluff, Silent Mobius is serious. Burst Angel may also be your speed. These are all early 2000 titles, but if you haven't seen it already, check out the original Dirty Pair series. If you don't mind newer stuff, check out the Girls with Guns trilogy from studio Bee Train. Noir, Madlax and El Cazador de la Bruja.

Honestly? Learn to take a chance. The time you waste searching for others' opinions is better used watching the first episode of wathever you stumbled upon. Looking for series similar to the ones you like is a good start. I rarely, if ever, get a good recommendation nowadays; I just read the small synopsis of every anime of the current season and choose 2 or 3 based on that. As crappy as MyAnimeList is, it's a great database to search shit on.

(Although people on this thread do give good recommendations; it's ironic how a site known for its anti-anime sentiment has such a good anime thread.)

This so much. Faggots and their crusade against women are as insufferable as gooners.

i guess i forgot my weekly bitching about the HnK remake but the truth is nothing noteworthy happened in the most recent episode, Toyo died and some tears were shed
but the lack of any glaringly obvious fuckups made me remember a post regarding the remake I read on JP xitter somewhere, which stated that people bashing the remake are probably viewing the 1986 original through rose-tinted glasses, that the remake looks good, is faithful etc while the 1986 version cuts corners everywhere, is full of errors and has a lot of fillers
what probably slipped past the guy's mind is that the 1986 version was achieved despite the technical limitations, while the remake looks the way it looks despite what's possible
Like you literally cannot objectively say that the remake looks as good as it could have looked had every viable tool been utilized, and they had been working on it since at LEAST 2023, because the first teaser poster came out in September that year
this is even wilder considering they only had to take work on visuals and audio and even that only partially - the story was already done

I don't, I just browse various genre tags or years and put down on my long backlog the anime I think look interesting. It's rare anymore I get recommendations from people if only because the vast majority only watch the current thing and I don't really want modern titles.

Dude, why would you do that. Don't put that evil on anyone.

Yes. An internet friend who's big into panties and upskirts adores that show. It's not my fetish, so I've been watching it on and off. It's only 12 episodes or something like that. I'm struggling with 12 Dirty Deeds for a similar reason.

I think I saw an episode or two of that when it was new.
*turns to dust*

If you don't mind newer stuff,
I have nothing against new stuff, and would like to get into it more. It's just so much of it is ...I'm hesitant to say bad, but it really doesn't appeal to me at all.

Sorry for doing this rant again, but I don't care for overwrought drama. So many anime recommendations are stuff like Avatar, My Hero Accademia, Attack on Titan, or Full Metal Alchemist. And I just can't. And no amount of sad doggo or "you didn't do anything" memes convince me otherwise.

I know I grew up in a different time, and they don't make em like they used to any more. But then once in a while something will come along that is fun, or someone will give me a recommendation, and I repeat the process of hope and disappointment all over again. eg. There's a webcomic I've been recommended more than once as perfect for me as it promises a return to the era of action anime I described. But each time I give it a try, the current story is an obvious author insert OC acting like a goof, and starting from the beginning is a tedious grind of backstory and narration about shit I don't care about.

Faggots and their crusade against women are as insufferable as gooners.
At least the gooners have fun.

By uhh... by... reading them. Or watching them.

I like to think that anti-anime sentiment is born from high standards. Once you have high standards you tend to start disliking more of a thing than you end up liking.

You would probably like something like Sorcerer Hunters or Space Adventure Cobra. Those are both fun but very dumb shows that feature attractive women, I would also say Cat's Eye too if you aren't against a show that is a little longer. The opening song will get stuck in your head forever though.

G Gundam mentioned. Best Gundam. Don't care about space politics, I just want to watch dudes kung fu fight each other in giant robots, and G Gundam has the highest quality hit of that. I don't think it has a single bad episode or section. Great characters, good visuals for a 50 episode TV show, iconic ending. Even the English dub is good because they knew to put their entire lungs into it. And it has the best "protagonist is about fuck some mofo up" music in all of anime.

I don't want to imply your standards are bad or wrong, but honestly, you should take the time to reflect on what you actually like about anime and what you are interested in. Like it or not, the majority of what you'll find is intended for children to watch on some level - they just range from 'literal toddlers' (kodomo) to 'suitable for preteens to teens' (shounen/shoujo) to 'mainly for adults but not necessarily mature' (seinen/josei). They are not trying to write "The Count of Monte Cristo" just because they aim for an older audience. Why do you like the stuff you like? Is it the art design? Specific emotional beats? Choices the characters make?

Though the anti-anime sentiment here specifically stems from people’s opinions being informed by null, whose ODD response to receiving recommendations was to push back then post hoc a contrived reason to justify his reaction.
I love his fake hatred for a lot of it. Like even if you hate it, you know certain things about it because you grew up around it, no question. So if he's talking about anime he'll be like, "God, anime sucks, like that one with the fighting, what's it's name? Dragon Basket P? Yeah, I don't watch anime and hate it, that character with the spikey black hair, Goo-Koo was it? Yeah, I have no idea who he is... Have I told you yet I've never watched anime and hate it and wouldn't be caught dead watching it? Cause it's true... okay?"

Just comes off as "methinks the lady doth protest too much". Like even if you claim to hate it, you know about Dragon Ball Z, you couldn't get away from it in the early 2000s, so getting the name hilariously wrong and continuing to proclaim "you don't know anything about anime". Is just really funny to me because he obviously knows what it is.
