I could see it being important to someone in a religious way, since being married to someone in the eyes of the church and to an extent God would help them and their family feel more attuned to their faith. But I don't really see what's so significant about whether or not the government agrees I should get married. I can still have a ceremony, call someone my husband, have a honeymoon, change my name, and all that. I wouldn't have it on my taxes, but who cares? My relationship's value does not hinge on it being recognized by a bunch of Israel-worshipping pedos

I have heard this solution to the gay marriage debate before: privatizing marriage. It could have worked during the 2000s when gay marriage was controversial, but now that it was forcibly legalized in all 50 states by activist judges, I don't think we can ever go back to the privatized marriage solution or the civil unions solution or any other compromise solution to gay marriage because the left doesn't want to go back, and the right will probably want to either ban gay marriage again or keep the status quo.
