For me a win consists of utterly destroying Quds Force and the nuclear weapons program. Root and stem.
Getting a secular western-style democracy would be high up on my wishlist, but even if Iran turns into Mad Max I will call it a win if Quds Force and Iran's highly enriched Uranium are completely extirpated and Ill call it a loss if 90% of Iranians get first-world living standards and rights but there is still a powerful Islamic fundamentalist army trying to bring about Armageddon. I'm not sure what a fair price is for that, but I'd say that if it costs less American lives than the Beirut barracks bombing then I'd consider that an awesome success.
As for a new Iran, ultimately it will come down to the Iranian people to make a new dawn in Tehran (hey, @Netanyahu and @therealDonaldTrump, you can have that one for free). This isn't just a moral decision that people get the government they deserve, but a practical decision that if the people aren't willing to fight to make a good government then they aren't willing to fight to maintain a good government. If the US and Israel create all the conditions needed for the Iranian people to succeed and they still choose some gay, cardboard cut out to lead them then oh fucking well, I'll still rest easy knowing that they won't be arming and training anymore terrorist armies to destabilize everyone else. Yes, there are economic costs that are harder to balance on a ledger, but I think that its doomerism to think that Iran can maintain any serious control over the strait for more than a month, and the only countries who were not at all prepared for this were not serious countries to begin with.
It's not like they haven't already considered similar (and even less feasible) plans in their own country

I'm not a fan of this war/conflict whatsoever, but I would love the outcome to be a new Iran and a much more stable middle east - it could be that tearing off the bandaid of Iran leads to a kind of renaissance in the middle east/asia. I would love something like that.
What does concern me though is it appears the Israelis have huge ambitions for "Greater Israel" and that they'll go into endless proxy conflicts in Syria and other countries that last decades.
TLDR: I don't think their ambitions are going to stop at Iran, they're going to fuck with every country there either directly or indirectly and this will probably set back the most modern and ambitious economies (such as the UAE/Saudi) in the region by decades. It's very disappointing too because despite the general hatred of "the browns" here and elsewhere, there definitely are some countries there that have been spending more time on capitalism than war/conflict/religious extremism.

I remember a quote someone on the xitty wrote a few years back, I think during Trump's first term and it was basically about how the US government started getting involved in fairly trivial wars and the local instability of the US had the repercussion of making the rest of the world less stable because the US wasn't there to be the police about things.
Technically speaking, none of this responsibility for managing the world should have ever fallen solely on the USA but it is how things have worked for like a century. I guess it could be changed so that the US has less presence or other countries at least play a part in all of this - that idea sounds great on paper and is technically "fairer" but its going to cost a lot to do and the interim amount of instability caused by the Strait closing may very likely end up costing society everywhere more than if the US had just done nothing and kept its typical power projection in the region and just defended against Iran's random and minor provocations.
Based on what Trump has said, we were lead to believe that Iran was in the process of an imminent attack against the US and Israel but its ok guys, because the US and Israel were also planning an extensive imminent attack against Iran.
So, in effect Trump, America and Israel have successfully broken Iran and the Strait of Hormuz - the question is if they can now fix it. On paper I guess the idea is that Iran gets taken over and whoever administers it will play ball better with the rest of the world and the Strait of Hormuz and the region will become more stable. And that can of course happen but its going to become a very serious question of how long that will take.
The long drawn out attacks against the fairly successful states in the region will have massive effects on the world economy. Places like Dubai really were significant financial and travel hubs and the amount of oil and gold that was smuggled through their and the amount of world trading they did is going to leave a huge gap.
I don't think people really fathom how significant those middle eastern states are on the world stage. Dubai alone is a super significant travel hub for people all across Europe and the US - not necessarily that want to actually visit Dubai as a city, but because Emirates airlines and the other middle east airlines are fucking huge and fucking dominant.

Why would NATO countries get involved? This was supposed to be a decapitation strike into a leadership change by Israel and the United States. It did not work and now the two countries that caused this mess need to figure out how to get out of it.
The U.S. and Israel are bombing the entire country. Unless you want to do a land invasion with the entirety of NATO, what else can they do?
