Somewhere there's a very frustrated Iranian missile guy trying to get a clean shot at their military bases but the impenetrable wall of skyscrapers is blocking all of his shots. OK, shitposting aside, I just had a weird realization.
If the war happened in like 2030–2040 instead of now, there’s a real chance we’d end up with AI puppeting a comatose dictator, and most people wouldn’t even notice.
Think about the training data alone. These guys produce insane amounts of it: decades of speeches, interviews, books, state TV appearances, party congress transcripts, propaganda footage, etc. Someone like an ayatollah, Kim Jong Un, or Xi Jinping probably has millions of words and thousands of hours of recordings out there.
And unlike normal public figures, every word is insanely controlled. Those 4–6 hour party congress speeches? They usually write or heavily edit every single line because they’re control freaks. That means the dataset is huge and stylistically consistent;perfect for training a model.
So imagine the guy has a stroke or ends up in a coma. Announcing it would trigger a massive power struggle, so the inner circle just… doesn’t. They spin up a model trained on decades of his speeches and voice.
The AI keeps giving speeches, issuing statements, appearing on TV. Policy slowly shifts depending on who’s steering the prompts or weights. More negotiation with the US? Nudge the model. More escalation? Nudge it the other way. As long as you keep the tone and ideology consistent, nobody questions it.
At that point, the dictator stops being a person and becomes a political avatar the regime runs for stability while the real decisions happen behind the curtain.

Nobody wants to escort tankers through the strait. It requires sailing into the gulf which would make any warship extremely vulnerable to attack. Even American ones. Which is why they haven’t done it.
They’d want to wait until the majority of (ideally all) Iran’s missile armed fast attack craft and shore-based anti-ship missile launchers are neutralized at the very least. Though I’d argue it’d still be an incredibly dangerous assignment for all concerned.

I would also imagine there is more footage being put out by the military of publically viewable Basij check points getting acked than of them hunting down high value targets.

I think the idea is to remove more/all of Iran's missile launch capability so that US forces aren't dealing with zero-warning launches, then put some marines and/or airborne ashore and blow up any links to the mainland. This pushes Iran's launchers back and if the US takes their Oil Terminal island the regime is fucked. I think the only reason the US hasn't hit their terminal is that capacity is still helping bouy the global oil market even if its funding the IRGC.
Also looking forward to brown hands seething about "we were told no boots on the ground" as if taking over some islands is the samething as occupying tehran, and as if from the build up the "small incursions/special forces" wasn't caveated.

So sleeping in hospitals, schools, etc. The US has been bombing everything that isn't their bunkers. Regime officials start moving into their bunkers, nothing happens, more move in, and then you hit all the bunkers to kill as many as you can.
Years of maintenance production maybe.
If only Trump had, I don't know, called a meeting with a bunch of defense contractors and threatened to invoke the Defense Production Act to get them to make more.

Minelayers/Minesweepers are usually just a term since, really even WWII, but since the cold war for a small warship that is meant to travel with the bluewater fleet but really meant for greenwater operations and lacks sufficient main gun/primary armament to engage meaningfully in surface action. WWII is a little fucky due to the number of WWI ships in use, but from the coldwar on Minelayers/Sweepers would have sonar & depth charges (because, as you point out, you can basically just have those things sitting on the deck, you don't need dedicated launch equipment) making them capable of anti-submarine warfare.
A mine layer would just have a cargo deck and a way of putting said cargo in the water. I might be hallucinating but I recall that Minesweepers, or at least NATO mine sweepers, would have a dive crew of underwater demolition divers (FROGMEN MENTIONED AGAIN!) to deal with detected mines, but usually mine layers were minesweepers and vice versa.
But anyway, forget dedicated ships, modern mines can be deployed via missile.

There is too much marine infrastructure to selectively hit, as thanks to ATGM/RPGs/Shore defense missiles ANY water craft is essentially a potential warship. The US is still hoping to have an friendly, stable Iranian government after all this is done, and leveling their entire shoreline won't help the new government get their finances back in order.
I think US warplanners also underestimated how much the IRGC doesn't give a fuck about their people or the long-term health of country.
I don't disagree with on most of your points, but I would say I think what's being conflated as "more capable" is that Hezbollah is used to operating in an environment there a technologically superior enemy has near uncontested control of the strategic battle space.
For IRGC, being bombed in their homes and bases is new and they aren't ready. They are used to being about to roll over any internal oppositon and getting bombed while doing is not what they were trained and prepared for. For Hezbollah, jew smart bombs raining down their positions is just another tuesday at the office.
Hezbollah has also for a long time been forced to prioritize "stealth" and "hardening" over every other consideration for their infrastructure. Iran has some hardened areas but not everywhere - they didn't need to eat the cost and lack of utility before now.

To try to tl;dr this: The officers "forward deployed" and learning lessons of how shit is going down are only there because they have minimal authority. The guys in high command are not leaving their comfy offices. So the generals at high command only know the lessons they learned when they disposable enough to actually be getting shot at. This is not just Iran to be clear, this is virtually every military. The US, from time to time, has a leader who will actually take reports from officers down at the "in the shit" level and try to see if lessons can be learned.
So what the IRGC is running is a combination of Iran-Iraq where Iran had at vry least near air-parity, and GWOT when US smart bombs were much less precise and surgical. They were still utterly amazing, but you had to worry about CEP where you might hit the next building instead of the one you were going for, that's no longer a concern.
Having NATO super weapons able to hunt them to not just their homes on crowded streets but individual apartments is not something they were operationally not at all ready for.
