What I wonder about Persona fans that don't play the games, is it because the PC versions all have Denuvo Anti-Tamper, in addition to the usual localization fuckery that happens with Japanese-made games released in English? Or do they play the games on console, where Denuvo isn't an issue?
I'm gonna go ahead and hazard a guess that it's like the, and you can put damn near any fandom/community into this spot, but it's like the Overwatch community, where they're more interested in it as a topic and not what it actually is. I'm using Overwatch here, because I feel it's one of the easier to see and understand with the comments I'm going to make, but as I said earlier, you can probably fill this in with a number of communities. With that being said...
One of the problems with fandoms/communities is you get a lot of people who exist on the tertiary of whatever it is. Overwatch et al has a lot of artists and social types, they don't play the game, but somehow make it a huge part of their life. You can often identify these social people, as they'll make sweeping comments about a character and their beliefs/behavior/etc, when it's quite possible, none of these things have even been covered (yet). Case in point, in Overwatch, in the... I don't remember if it was just in announcement mode or the Beta had dropped, but one of Tracer's win poses; and some lunatic took to the official forums and on top of his argument of the win pose (girl's back and ass pointed at you, she's looking over her shoulder) he stated it doesn't befit her character. The game hadn't even had an official launch, and you have some fucking weirdo making statements about what a fictional fucking character would be; and if you need to ask, no it wasn't even part of the Blizzard team, was some basic fucking gamer. So with that in mind, I also ask you to recall our recent political situation, where everyone is reciting pop culture as a reason to resist Trump; they're not quoting the founders, a notable politician, a general, or anyone else in real life, they're using fucking pop culture (mostly Young Adult) as a fucking rallying cry. And with The Internet being what it is, and online communities being what they are (hug boxes with strict vetting) who can't handle a simple disagreement about anything, you don't actually have to partake in the actual game to be seen as a member of the community. Game stats or mechanics; no, I like the lore/story/characters/etc. You don't have to know what's going on, but as long as you toe the line in the properly acceptable fashion, you're fine. Now throw in all the social/behavioral/mental problems these people have, and the game isn't even a thing they really do, as much as it is the bonfire to interact with one another, but not in the game and not about the game, just around it.
I could've saved a lot of time by saying the world is cucked and they're all soulless husks, but I felt obligated to at least defend my thought process.
