Antidepressants can and do work. There's a sizeable number of people who just take a single pill and have done so for many years or even decades with no or minimal bad effects.
I believe most people have mild depression or other things like social anxiety disorder or anxiety disorders that it does genuinely help with.

I know the parlance of our times is about the SSRI stare and everything else but they do work for a lot of people.

I was given Paxil as a kid and decided to stop it cold turkey as soon as I could, at age 19. I felt better quickly, with the exception of having annoying but harmless electric rushes in my head, multiple times per day. This lasted a whole year. I also had some moodiness which actually just ended up making music seem more passionate and movies less boring. I was also able to bust nuts more quickly, again another non-essential but great for quality of life.
