were not American. Not just as an addendum to WWII, but as a separate unit entirely. If a state politician tried to mandate an entire unit dedicated to the Armenian Genocide or Tiananmen Square they'd be laughed out of the fucking room. But you're saying it's fine since it's not the feds mandating it, right?
also, anecdotally, my kids went to school in a state
not in that list and they've been sent home with copies of
Night and Anne Frank. Even if it's not officially mandated it's more or less expected in most states and you know it.

Japan has a habit of reusing WW2 ship names. For a carrier, it's fitting. Well, aircraft carrying cruiser. Legally by their constitution they still can't have a "carrier". So it's "not a carrier" legally ( but it is by role)
The JSDF as a whole is interesting. For those not in the know they're ostensibly not allowed to have a standing army (thanks to the US) which means it has to be considered a "self-defense force," so they're constantly toeing the line on how big their military is and how they use it. During the Biden presidency they looked like they were starting to mobilize since they didn't trust the US to protect them from China, but I wonder how that'll change with Trump in charge and more amicable relations developing.
