Why is this happening? I have never in my entire life seen companies so utterly terrified of offending conservatives. This is going beyond firing employees for blatant calls to violence, they are now actively kowtowing. Why, what is driving this behavior?

Honestly? Most of it is circumstantial and just comes down to vibes depending on whatever political team you want to believe in or make a part of your identity.

No, but when we got like five pieces of evidence it is basically all conjecture and quotes and comments from vague people in the community who may or may not be misremembering. We really won't know the reason or cause until a manifesto is found or because the killer is still alive, he discusses his reasons for the attack.

My vibe, is that a lot of the government is already pivoting to blaming some other shit, such as the leftists celebrating versus the killer being a leftist. If those closest to the investigation or would have clearance, I think they would be out there telling us. Its probably worth asking why this particular death feels so egregious, and I think that is undeniable now. A large segment of the population, even including people who were not that interested in Kirk's politics like myself, feel very strongly about it. I might guess that in part, despite some differences, we view him as one of our own.

I've been trying to explain this to a few people offline, one who thought I was overreacting a bit, but he has since come around and gets it now. At least why this assassination is affecting me so badly.

Sure. I saw people celebrating Brian's murder, but not like this. Not to this extent. People in my personal life, who I have known for years and got close to, they are celebrating and laughing and that terrifies me. Big same. I did not take it well when I saw a (now former) friend of 10+ years mocking and laughing at his death. A woman who is pregnant with her first child and her and her husband finding it so "glorious" that Charlie was murdered. It was difficult not to say "I hope your child doesn't have to grow up without their father like the two babies whose dad you're laughing about." I just cut her off quietly. It sucks. It hurts. I really cares about her and was so excited to meet her child.
