It might just be the grammar Nazi in me, but I absolutely loathe scanlations where it's obvious that they haven't bothered to proofread it, or where the dialogue is extremely awkward and stilted. Hilariously bad translations I'm fine with (especially a certain beautiful one *CHEW*), and there are some pretty good groups and even a few individuals out there, but if people are gonna half-ass their project it makes me want to put it down and not pick it up until a better version arrives.

The manga that my avatar's from, Ushiro, had a web manga untranslated for the longest time until I paid a translator to crank out some translations for me. When the physical volume for it dropped in Japan, it started showing up on manga websites translated finally, only for me to discover that the translation, while grammatically correct, was fucking terrible. The people who did it took so many liberties with the actual script of the manga, there's not a single character who doesn't talk out of character the whole time. A totally disconnected and archetypal cool-guy shinigami who most of the time speaks in a laid-back manner would not patronize the lead female protagonist by calling her "princess."

These lines are both from the aforementioned cool-guy shinigami. Fucking gusto?

Remember how I said I was going to watch Your Lie In April?

Yeah, I've got to episode 19 and stopped because it's like having your heart very very slowly extracted by hooks made of feels. Like, I can't actually go any further with it because I know what's happening.

Onwards and upwards, knocked down The Comic Artist and his assistants and Galko-Chan because I still have fuck all better to do with my time during the day and have made a start on Durarara! Which is... different.

Like, in a good and interesting way.

I would go with Ryo-Ohki series 1 & 2.

Definitely Ryo-Ohki 1 and 2 are worth a watch, even if they are over two decades old. War on Geminar is okay, though I seem to be a bit harsher towards it than the average person. I got about halfway through Tenchi Universe before stopping, and I don't remember why. Maybe I'll try finishing it after I finish up what I'm currently watching.

Then I'll try the OVA. Is it on Hulu or some other streaming service?

sage's opinions on anime are infamously bad, honestly. Don't really use his stuff as a base line for anything- he genuinely doesn't know what the hell he's even talking about a lot of the time.

Why so? Can you elaborate?

Also yeah, the Tenchi guy does release doujins for the Tenchi multiverse- but from what I know, it's pretty evenly split between 'expanding the setting/furthering the ties between Ryo-ohki and the spin offs' and 'lol i just wanted to draw them fucking'.

So are they official material as such?

The Black Lagoon guy does it, Go Nagai does it, Masamune Shiro does it- list goes on.

This shows how little I know about anime, I have no idea what these are.

Japan's weird, man. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Good food though.

Dual is apparently amazing, but I haven't seen it. Only tangentially related to the franchise, apparently? I've heard the ties are made more explicit in the doujins.

What's Dual?

It's available on Funimation's site, you'll have to create an account so you can watch due to it being labeled "Mature Content".

I would say not, despite coming from a person who worked on it. Often that is the problem with fan art, either done by amateurs or professionals, it's still unofficial unless otherwise sanctioned or approved by the owners if the IP.

You'll figure it out eventually.

Was watching Dragon Maid as I recognized it's done by the same guy who did "I Can't Understand What My Husband is Saying". A show I really liked as it kinda threw out typical anime conventions and focused on the life between a newly married couple. Episodes were only around 2-3 minutes long, but it was a good show regardless.

Dragon Maid I have mixed feelings on. I kinda like how dry and deadpan Ms. Kobayashi is, and I kinda like the premise. However, some things kinda put me off about it.

Now, I have read the artist has experience in making hentai, and by god does it show here, and not in ways I like. I don't really care for how Kanna seems to have thick legs for a little kid, or how there's some overtly sexual undertones between her and her third grade classmate. Also, Quetzalcoatl's constant flirting with the mage boy is just creepy. I get it's all supposed to be played for laughs, but I just don't really find it funny.

The other show I was watching was "Interview with Monster Girls". It has an interesting concept, a teacher learning more about demi-humans by interviewing them. And frankly it's kinda refreshing to see a protagonist who's a mature adult. Even though the show seems to have elements of a harem anime, here it feels natural as the protagonist is clearly a mentor type of character and any crushes the girls may be having on him are mostly just part of entering into puberty.

Still, it doesn't really do enough to maintain my interest, and I just don't find it all that funny either. (The bit where the vampire girl poked at the headless horsman girl's boobs prompting a reaction from the head who's MILES away from it was kinda clever though)

Are you planning on picking up Centaur's Worries this summer? I read some of the manga a while back; it had a similar general premise to Interviews with Monster Girls, but it had a lot more intensive worldbuilding instead of plopping down a couple monster girls in what's essentially modern-day Earth. If Haoliners doesn't drop the ball (again) it might turn out to be really interesting.

The main reason is that he's generally uneducated about the context and demographics of the series he watches, despite positioning himself as a source of authority. He also tends to judge it entirely off of the dub- which isn't a particularly good thing to do, since a good chunk of his shit tends to be old 90s/80s OVAs brought over by Manga Entertainment or Central Park Entertainment, where the dubs were laughed at for being terrible even at the time.

He's basically to anime what Linkara is to comics. A guy who really only sticks to a handful of genres, but speaks as an authority for the medium overall- despite not knowing what the hell he's talking about.

So are they official material as such?
Kind of. They're treated as canon in broad strokes, to my understanding.

This shows how little I know about anime, I have no idea what these are.
You'll learn.

What's Dual?
It's a spoof of giant robot anime, in particular Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Hasn't the manga plot barely moved since S1 ended?

its almost if they just have barely enough material and are trying to get it out before the anime public completely forgets about the franchise. But I bet we'll still get five more spins off before season 3 is release in 203X.(Attack on Titan Junior High left scars that have yet to heal).
AOT JH was a cancer.
I used to love AOT, but slowly left the series last summer.
I only use it for hentai and what not.

Ah good, there are more people who think Linkara knows nothing about comics.

This is probably why I'm looking forward to and also dreading his upcoming Pokémon movie review. For one thing, everything's been said about it, and the review Suede, Linkara and JewWario did was probably one of the better ones done if only because of JewWario who seemed to have known his stuff. I don't think there's anything new he can bring to the table about it, and he could end up leaving some information out or getting facts wrong. (And I think this is his 4KIDS callout he's teased about in the past, so that could take up a bit of the review.)

I think Sage has brought up differences (and maybe called out on) between an anime's dub and sub a few times, and his writing team at least appears to attempt to do research where applicable (why I think Mark the Engineer is probably the brains behind everything and I think he'd be a better reviewer), but yeah, it'd be nice if there was more depth to his reviews--the closest he got to this that I can think of is probably his Video Girl Ai review. I could understand if he just doesn't want to use fan-subs, but if he's not watching the official subtitled version of any anime he owns to get a feel of what the original was like, it'd just further add to his dub bias that he has despite his ragging on bad dubs. Which I honestly do get, but I also don't care about if something's either subbed or dubbed as long as I get to watch something, so I probably "don't get it" after all.

I mean, I'd like to have more dubs that take some creative liberties in a title's localization as long as it doesn't betray the spirit/message of the anime. I sometimes feel like dubs these days are a little too faithful to the original, though it could also just be the difference in line delivery and the voice actor's performance. The language barrier is unfortunately always going to be there, which is probably why it's such a fine line to tread when it comes to making calls on these dubs. Can't please everyone, after all.

But what do I know? I don't know much about oldtaku history. I don't know what it was like to be an anime fan prior to the late-90s since I was only a kid when anime was first being shown on public television. I don't really know what it was like to struggle and bend-over-backwards to get a shoddy secondhand copy of a video tape recording of some anime that has no subtitles. I didn't even think that the bad dubs were even criticized at the time since fans had to take what they could get.

Sorry for rambling, I've always wondered about this sort of thing.

Ive always really enjoyed those fan-animations of anime OP/ED using characters from a different anime. The seem to mostly come from Japan and Nico Nico Douga, so they can be sometimes hard to find since copies tend to get yanked off YouTube pretty fast. There was a Soul Eater 2nd OP done with Smash Bros that was really good, but tends to be really hard to find a HD version on YouTube as it gets yanked fast.

Anyway, here's a good one I've found.

Doesn't help that he's a part of Channel Awesome, and has some association with both Linkara and Spoony.

"Mature content" I imagine it has mild content but because its a cartoon, it has to have a warning?

I would say not, despite coming from a person who worked on it. Often that is the problem with fan art, either done by amateurs or professionals, it's still unofficial unless otherwise sanctioned or approved by the owners if the IP.

I think this is from the creator?

Kind of. They're treated as canon in broad strokes, to my understanding.

So canon is nebulous with this franchise?

Can you give me some examples where he was wrong?

I still can't get over the fact that Kodansha made two comdey spin offs that released so close. like holy fuck they were both unfunny as sin. They were both shat out cause the manga wasn't being released fast enough for the money shoots liking. and I am not going to lie the only reason why I fellow the series was cause 2013 was a odd year for me and didn't have much to do other wise. I just sort of fell out of the series once the anime's climax happen. Might give it another go with season 2 happening, but I think season 2 going to have filler.

Oh my God, the AOT salt is already pretty good with the 12-episode announcement, but to have filler in that short amount of time will be glorious. And we're never going to hear the end of it.

A friend of mine says it was a mistake (and also doesn't make sense) for Wit Studio to wait four years for season two, animator staff shortage or no. This is kind of what I'd expect from Toei who can somehow pull this shit off and still end up making a profit at the end of the day, not from a studio that's only been around since 2012. It makes Studio Pierrot look smarter in that regard even though they've become infamous for their fillers and making questionable anime-only decisions with their properties.

In-between season 1 and 2 of AoT we got Kabaneri so I think that's not a bad thing at all. I think that even after waiting four years for a second season it's still gonna get the same viewership it would've gotten, AoT was the hype of hype when its anime dropped.
