A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I think the answer is pretty obvious: they wanted to use any excuse to hide the fact that he wasn't a native until after the story left the news cycle, and they only changed course because both a fake name and the real name were gaining lots of attention, and they decided that revealing the killer to be black was favourable to him being believed to be a muslim immigrant.

AFAIK only a judge can lift the ban on the name being reported. It's always been within the power of the court to lift such restrictions, this time it was done under duress of the mob.

I think the way the process works is that there has to be a request made to reveal the name of an under 18 ( normally under the guise that it is in the public interest ) and this has to be approved by a judge. Given that this normally happens after the person is charged with a crime ( before then they haven't technically been accused of anything ) and the police took several days interviewing Axel ( I think there are a lot of safeguarding procedures around interviewing "children" - the police know that if they mess this up it might prove more difficult to successfully prosecute, plus it looks bad if they violate a child's rights, especially in a very high profile case )......
As for the fact that Axel was 9 days under 18 at the time of the offence - the Law is the Law. If he was one day under it would have been the same. Judges interpret the Law, follow precedent and are very much that pedantic.
I can understand why this took several days and I don't think there is any great conspiracy there.
I do sympathise with your argument and it certainly seems strange to me that they can declare an incident isn't terrorist related at almost lightening speed ( what are the criteria for this - has it ever been made public ? ) and that it is down to mental health issues - normally it takes months to get diagnosed ?

I'd say it's unlikely that he'll turn up. Him and the other Lotus Eaters have been warning people not to go to these events in case they get caught up in police sweeps, violent groups etc. They seem a bit sweaty under the collar on the show, making very clear that they don't support political violence etc. They instead prefer to point at events like the 2 recent Tommy events in London that seem to have been pretty much free of violence and framed in advance by organisers as emphasising that they are peaceful assemblies - probably helped by being framed around two-tier policing rather than just demonstrating against Muslims. They probably will do a podcast segment on Monday looking at the activities of these demonstrations over the weekend.
