He's an addict with no shortage of dealers a few clicks away. Playing a new game might even trigger a fresh dopamine rush as he goes from nothing to buying his way to the top, so he can convince himself he's some sort of god gamer.

On the other hand, Phil hates change and in general is just a manchild who stomps his feet when things don't go away. While he has played mobile games before, as far as we know Champions is the big addiction where he really started spending money, so it's possible he has some form of attachment to it.

I'm cautiously optimistic we'll find whatever game he jumps ship to. I think, after all this time, he's finally learned not to use TheyCallMeDSP or some DSP variation in his username. Maybe. Probably. I don't know, I think it's like...30/70. But even if he has finally learned the most basic version of online anonymity, there's no way people don't find out. Either some dedicated detractor will catch a reflection of his phone and see the new game, or more likely, Phil will accidentally say the name or at least talk about it in broad enough terms where someone who is familiar with the game identifies it. I think from there, it'll only be a matter of time before someone is able to track down Phil. Probably through something weirdly specific, like joining a guild/clan/whatever and seeing a top guy complaining about his Doordash arriving early or boasting about a Tekkan mall trophy or something else that is uniquely Phil.
 
Would he be dumb enough to claim his hogan hoarding as a business expense on his taxes to deduct it from his taxable income?

It's been said before in this thread but if Phil had blown 200k on hookers and cocaine I would have a hundred times more respect from him because he at least would have gotten some value out of his money. Mobile games are literally just nothing. You pay money for nothing and get nothing from it. It's the lamest and most boring addiction of all time.

People have been arguing back an forth about this point for years. I think the main point against, was that his tax burden and tax debts should be lower if he did that. But I never crunched the numbers and to me it seems like something he would do, especially considering how he handled the bankruptcy.

But dumb? I dunno, consensus seems to be that it would be very hard to prove that it's not a business expense. He's a video game streamer, he's keeping up with the industry.

The main reason I don't think he doesn't is laziness. It sounds like he just hires someone to do his taxes for him with minimal effort. Phil is incredibly greedy, but only when it requires like 0 effort, as shown by him continually spending money on his CT condo instead of trying to sell/rent it, even when there are other companies to do that. He lost thousands of dollars each year because he refused to take a phone call.

With his bankruptcy, I don't think the idea to lie about his business expenses was related to his Champions spending. I think it more or less went "here's what you want to fill in for monthly business expenses" and then Phil put that number in and basically said it was on "video game stuff." I think he'd have done that whether he was addicted to Champions or not.

Phil, for all his greed, is genuinely pretty awful at anything financial. He constantly overspends on things he doesn't need and gets suckered by the shiniest packages/upselling speech.

I did the math a while ago and it could go either way depending on whether his IRS payment plans include interest payroll tax. To quote myself from this post:

This will all assume Phil made $120,000 and use 2021 rates. $120,000 is in the right ballpark and the year-over-year changes to tax brackets since the Trump tax cuts were signed have been small.

Scenario 1: Phil does not take business deductions and only owes back income tax. This is more or less what Actually assumed.
Taxable income = $120,000 - $12,550 standard deduction = $107,450.

Using the brackets from that link we get a tax due of 10 % * $9,950 + 12% * ($40,525 - $9,950) + 22% * ($86,375 - $40,525) + 24% * ($107,450-$86,375) = $19,809. This is in the same ballpark as Phil's claim to owe $17,000 for 2018 and the difference could be a down payment he was able to make when negotiating the payment plan.

Scenario 2: Phil deducts $60,000 in business expenses and the payment plan is a lumped sum for payroll and income tax. This is based on the bankruptcy filing exclusive of the random spike to $9,000 in 2019 July.

Taxable income = $60,000 - $12,550 standard deduction = $47,450. Yes it is legal to take standard and business deductions concurrently

Now we get an income tax due of 10 % * $9,950 + 12% * ($40,525 - $9,950) + 22% * ($47,450 - $40,525) = $6,187.50.
For payroll tax we get 15.6% * $47, 450 = $7,417.80.

Sum the two together and you get $13,417.80. This is in the right ballpark but slightly lower than the $17,000 he claimed to owe and the difference could be some combination of increases in his Champions spending + counting the credit card payments as business expenses + fees charged by his accountant + penalties and fees charged by the IRS + him just not making a distinction between federal and state taxes. The bank leaks show payments to "State of Washington" but the amount and frequency are very inconsistent so it's hard to say with any confidence which of those are state B&O tax vs. something else.

I think it was related to Champions because of the random spike in business expenses to $9,000 in July of 2019 (see page 4 of this PDF). He would have qualified for Chapter 7 even if he reported $0 in business expenses for that month, but instead he picked a number so implausibly large it would (well, should) have drawn added scrutiny and he has no other expenses that could add randomly go up by $4,000 in a given month.

Based on Page 2 of this PDF, Line 12 states that Phil and Kat's combined income was $68,796.12/year after business expenses are subtracted out. Meanwhile, Line 13 on page 2 shows the cutoff for Chapter 7 eligibility is $78,823.00. So he didn't just meet the cutoff, he met it with $10,000 margin to spare. There was no reason to have a random spike to $9,000 in business expenses unless he had something to back it up, otherwise he was not only perjuring himself but doing it in a way that would increase the risk to himself.

To head off the next question - their combined income was $131,722.20 before business expenses. Phil needed to deflate his income by at least $4,408 / month to avoid automatic rejection, and given the oddly specific numbers in his statement of income (i.e. it wasn't nice round numbers and it didn't work out to just enough to qualify) I suspect those numbers correspond to real expenses, even though they were probably fraudulent. If it wasn't Champions it was probably his credit card bills which were....... largely due to Champions.

Depending on scenario he doesn't necessarily have to lie. He just dumps all his documents to his tax guy and lets him figure it out. Since DSP is a video game streamer the accountant wouldn't be totally off-base attributing huge amounts of video game spending to business expenses.

I certainly wouldn't expect thousands of dollars each month to Scopely to be for leisure (considering the client struggles financially a lot).

That's the important part. His Tax guy most likely knows what he (Phil) does for a living and most likely has some concept of how it works, so when a person who plays video games for a living and makes video game related purchases for his business tells him the 5K dollars was spent on gaming related stuff, it makes sense for him to assume the money being spent on Champions is being used for his business.

Yup, and DSP is very tismy about this kind of stuff, in his mind he's probably not to blame, as he doesn't have to correct the stoopid marahn's bad assumptions. It's the job of the tax guy to do the taxes, DSP did nothing wrong, he did everything correct, etc. The bankruptcy numbers probably went the same way.
 
he probably puts/allows his taxpreparer to list the champs spending as a business expense. Thats the simplest explanation for where the 5k/month business expense comes from. He/Rochelle knew that the boomer court system isn't going to know or care to disentangle what super mario nintendo playstation cartridges phil buys that count as business and which don't even though its stupidly obvious on our end.

Haven’t seen many updates to the "road to 50k a year" saga.

Is Tj just getting bored of tallying up the spending or has Phil not had any expendable cash to drop 1k or close like he usually does?

He got 500 off the indie marathon alone so it's a bit confusing.

Not sure how the calculations work but I think some of the spending can't be tracked. The spending on the events with leaderboard can, but there are probably just regular pulls as well.

Wait, am I reading this right? Phil has 577 characters in the game? When his account was first posted here January 2020 he had 200 characters. It's been about 228 weeks since then, so that's 149 more than 1 new character a week the game puts out? And Phil has them ALL?!?

I'm pretty sure I've said it before in this thread, but this is beyond addiction.
This is like Mega Autistic Hyper-fixation. Like after his bloated corpse is found a Medical Examiner is going to conclude, "Well, it looks like his body was more WWE Champions than man at this point."
