If this were anyone other than such an insufferable prick, I would feel bad for him. I've seen where this road he's on ends, and if he doesn't want to steer off, it's death. You cannot keep doing this forever without that inevitable ending. While I think his kids probably have that deep down resentment for him, as they now how to live with the shame that their neglectful father acts this way, they also want him to get better because you have that unconditional love for your family, no matter what. As for shooting raccoons, .223 is probably appropriate. It is commonly referred to as a "varmint round," and no it won't explode a raccoon, and is generally not used for deer hunting. 22LR on a raccoon would likely result in wounding and prolonged and painful death without excellent shot placement (though I guess Nick may not be averse to that). And if you're shooting at raccoons, you're aiming at a downward angle (or up into trees I guess), so bullet travel isn't too much of an issue (and if you're shooting up into a tree from right underneath it, a falling bullet will only reach terminal velocity and isn't all that dangerous. It would depend on how far he was from the tree, as a falling bullet at a shallow angle will still maintain most of its lateral velocity).
