Somebody said (Aaron, I think) that Nick first took coke at one of the Anime Matsuri conferences, which makes sense to me.

If he'd started taking it as a teenager/young adult like most people do, he'd have either fallen out of love with it or he'd have developed a problem much earlier. As with so many of Nick's bad habits, he seems to have developed them when he became a minor e-celebrity.

You'd think that somebody developing a taste for cocaine in their forties would have matured sufficiently to be able to engage in recreational use with a high level of control. But my experience has been that whenever people start using drugs later in their life, they've generally got a drug shaped hole in their psyche and they've always immediately headed helter-skelter into chaos. They've invariably been lacking in humility and insight too, so telling them that their world is about to go tits up always falls on deaf ears.

Consumption isn't the only metric of whether a policy is working or not though. What you really want to look at is the aggregate harm a policy causes. Prohibition created all manner of aggregate harms. People who don't care much about alcohol stopped drinking. However, alcoholics continued to drink -- and they did so without the social constraints that had previously been in place. Rather than buying good quality alcohol of high purity that was taxed and controlled by government, they were buying rotgut whiskey that made them go blind, sold by gangsters. Fortunes were made by criminal gangs and many institutions (police, judiciary, etc.) were corrupted by the large quantities of easy money made by just turning a blind eye -- to a cultural practice that had been with us for the whole of human history. And you're criminalizing people who are generally law abiding, again, for a behaviour humans have engaged in for all of human history.

And of course, people rapidly recognized that it was an enormous policy failure -- that's why they repealed it.

Kayla's should be local. But we don't get much perspective on their visits or involvement through Nick that I remember.

Nick's parents are in Florida and he will occasionally talk about them visiting on stream. They seemed involved. At least in the past.

We don't really know when the house fell apart other than it probably happened at some time between new years and early May. i.e. the winter after the december holidays. Given that this is rural Minnesota, I would think Nick & family would be visiting his parents in Florida during the winter rather than them coming up to visit him. But that is speculation.

I think though that even if the family visited the grandparents and florida and never saw the house during the winter, that the condition of everyone would have been impossible to hide. Especially the kids. But also Kalya and Nick's weight loss & general physical condition.

That's the part I don't get. Even if they didn't go to the house it would be impossible to not notice that Nick lost a significant amount of weight, especially in his face, and that Kayla looked like a used up strung out crack whore.
