A brief overview of what the Switch needs to be a success (and avoid the WiiU's failures):
  • Third party support past the first year of release. Simply releasing ports of popular games won't cut it.
  • Decent battery life, more than 3-4 hours at the very minimum.
  • Graphics above that of the WiiU, without compromising on frame-rate. If nintendo want to appeal to the mobile games market, they need to show the power of the console over a smartphone.
  • Below $300 price tag.
  • Enough features to make it not simply make it a portable console. I've heard it has touch screen support, but I'm not sure that'll be enough
At the moment, I'm not convinced it'll meet more than 3 of these

  • Decent battery life, more than 3-4 hours at the very minimum.
This is a literal technological impossibility I'm afraid. No battery that isn't in the thousands will be able to run full, HD 3d games for that long. Even your 800$ smart phone will die very quickly when playing even simple 3D games that look like shit.
  • Below $300 price tag.
Especially combined with this demand. However, many rumors (from people that have been right) are saying it'll be in the upper $200s.

EDIT: I think people's expectations are a bit too high on this system. I've seen people say it needs to be almost or more powerful than the PS4 Pro, 6 hour battery life minimum, tablet component run at 1080p 60fps, and under 300$. A system like that would be well over a thousand to actually build per model and the retail price would be even more than that to churn out a profit. We're just not there yet.

My personal expectations for the Switch in terms of actual specifications:
  • about as powerful as the PS4 or Xbone, if its more powerful then only slightly
  • comparatively short battery life
  • at least 720p60 on the actual console screen (most "leaks" say it can output 4k to televisions, if thats true then it probably wont be 60fps 4k)
This sounds bad and yeah it's honestly not as good as the PS4 Pro, but I really think most people are judging it unfairly. Its not going to be extremely powerful, but if it has HD and runs at least as smoothly as the Wii U then I don't see an issue. It might not live up to the next generation of home consoles, but its not just a home console, and on the portable side of things the Switch is absolutely dominating over anything the 3DS or PS Vita were capable of.

Most rumors say 720 on the tablet, ups to 1080 on tv (not positive on that, though). Has about or a little less power than the Xbox one. But since it's newer, it might have found ways to run more effecitantly on less raw power. I dont really see why people want it to be a carbon copy of the ps4 and xbox one if I'm being honest. If you want a ps4 or xbox one...get a ps4 or xbox one.

I don't think people really understand the limits of a mobile device, honestly.

I seem to remember the 3DS being capable of running for more than three hours without needing a recharge. Given how accurate the leaks were with regard to the general design of the system I don't see any reason to doubt that they are wrong when they say the specs are similar to vanilla PS4/XB1, the battery life is short, the cost is between 250 and 350, the screen has touch features (but all games have to run well without them for TV play) and a lot of the early line up will be upgraded versions of Wii U games.

Sorry for whiffing on the trigger button complaint yesterday, I'm happy to be wrong on that.

At launch, it's life was abysmal. In later editions where it was improved it still was only 3-5 hours (depending on brightness, 3D setting, how intensive the game was, ect.). When you think about it, the Switch being able to run around 3 hours for what it is (full HD intensive games)...actually better than one would reasonably estimate given the battery life span on the 3DS and smart phones (my $800 one can barely play fucking Subway Surfers for that long).

Someone out there really needs to put more research into batteries. It's like all technology is improving but batteries are staying shit.

Personally, I think that the switch will provide Wii U-quality games on battery, and better than Wii U-quality games when plugged into its cradle.

I'm really excited and optimistic about this. Assuming I finally have a full-time job that pays enough to live on, I'll probably get one a few months after launch.

I don't see this replacing Nintendo's handheld line, at least not this generation (this really seems to be marketed as more of a console that happens to be portable, not to mention the size and apparently short battery life), but who knows--in 5 years, they could end up merging.

Nintendo realized they need to stop using gimmicks and start using gimmicks.

It gets ten points for (it looks like) no motion controls.
From what I've read, those things that slide off of the side have motion sensors, so they're supposedly like tiny Wii remotes. (Note that I don't remember where I read that, though.)

I don't actually have a 3DS for financial reasons but I'm probably going to get one within the next few months.

When I've tried other peoples' 3DS'es, however, I've turned the 3D off. The selling point for me was always that it was a second generation DS with improved graphics, the 3D is just a side thing for people who need a gimmick each time. I too am one of those people with severely unbalanced vision who can barely see the real world in 3D. Weirdly, 3D movies kind of work for me, but the effect feels so unnatural that I get a blistering headache and have to keep one eye shut (so I always go to 2D screenings).
This is pretty much why I bought a 2DS instead a few years ago. I can see 3D perfectly fine, but I literally don't care about it. I can play all of the 3DS library (except for the handful of games that nees a New 3DS XL, none of which I've been interested in), and I saved like $100.

Noticed this in the Switch teaser, thought it was funny enough to screencap.

You forget that the switch is much bigger than a smartphone. 4 Hours seems like an easy enough target to attain, especially if running the chip at half capacity.
generic small lipo: http://hobbyhobby.com/store/product/325430/LiPo-GrimRacer-2S-7.4V-4200mAh-30C/ 7.4 V, 4.2 AH -> 31 watt hour. Half capacity chip running at 5 watts -> 6 hours. Or 3 hours running at full speed. And I would be surprised if they don't use a denser battery.

The tegra parker used is also more powerful than any tablet on the market, gpu-wise. With optimized software, around the performance of a gtx 960m or gtx 965m laptop gpu, or about the level of the xbox one. 60 fps maybe not, but 1080p 30 fps constant certainly.

That is if this custom chip is not configured to use more than 10 watts when docked. Else it could significantly raise above those levels.

So far we have tegra processor 30$, and lipo 80$. add a display and a couple button and material cost should be no more than 200. Under 300$ is possible.

The New 3DS is also way, way, way faster. Especially if you want to hack it and put emulators on it.

Actually, thats how most TV/Phone/Game adverts work. Its almost always greenscreened in.

I'm sure in most cases it makes it easier to see the screen than it would be to film an actual screen by itself, though of course the games could've been developed before or after they shot the footage.

Often they used to do this back in the CRT days when showing a TV screen while filming it often led to flickering due to the nature of the medium versus the shutter speed used in the camera.

It looks interesting to say the least. It'd be great if we could get all of the Earthbound/MOTHER games, in English, but that'll never happen.

-Bethesda and Capcom doing things for it has me curious as to how the line-ups will work out. Nintendo Fallout when?

I'm hyped for this new console, hopefully they learned from their mistakes with the Wii U. I doubt this will happen, but I hope the Nintendo Switch isn't region locked. At least if there are a few import games in particular that I want.

But looking at how they handled it with the Wii U and 3DS, I'm guessing it will be.
