The whole "gotta go fast!" I file as Sega fucking themselves with their own marketing. Outside of loopdeloop sections or if you have the game perfectly memorized, going top speed was a sure way to lose your rings.

But for whatever reason it's what people stuck with instead of multilayer platformer with lots of momentum.

Ever since then, Sonic has been fucking himself perpetually on how to do gottagofast but also have a game that is an enjoyable platformer. And it either feels "slow" or you smash burst and "it plays itself". Want to do a proper gottagofast? You make FZero gx with a Sonic skin, that's the only way you will get a real winmer leaning on speed.

That also Sega is unable to be consistent for more than a game and that Sonic is a tism magnet diesn't help. Going back to the whole "fans don't know what they want". They do know, but instead of having a big coherent fanbase, it's multiple small ones that hate each other, really love one game for whatever reason and that's the thing they want and only that (the tism doesn't help), so trying to satisfy all of them is pointless.

They could combine them all in one game, I guess.

Wasn't that basically what generations did? Though they seemed to fail miserably to follow up on it.

Keep in mond I'm not much of a Sonic fan, only really liked 3 + Knuckles and Mania and fucking hated Adventure. So I could have a misconception on what Generations did.

Generations was basically Unleashed (minus the werehog mechanics) + Colors + Classic Sonic with not 100% accurate physics. The modern Sonic parts were basically that "F-Zero with Sonic" you mentioned earlier, especially since you can drift on tight corners.

In fact the modern sonic parts were so loved, modders were trying to add levels from BOTH unleashed and Colors into Generations.

Plus, the 3DS version was predictably an dud.

That's debateable. For one thing, it actually had special stages, so you had to put actual effort to get the chaos emeralds. Said special stages were the ones from Sonic heroes, but MUCH more improved control-wise.

it also had an online mode where you could play other people to increase your player profile score, which could be used to unlock new skins and other stuff for your player card. The replayability was definitely there. It was one of the top 3DS games I used to play religiously until the online servers became a ghost town.

They had 3D & 2D, but I mean incorporate each style of game. Classic 2D, Rush, Lost World, etc. Sonic has been pretty varied, it would be a lot of work but they could just add a quest line for each style. Hell, add 3D Blast and stuff too, make it like a celebration of the series. Could be a cool 35th anniversary idea.

The 3DS version of Generations is more unique than you'd think. Outside of Green Hill (and technically Casino Night), the 3DS version doesn't share any levels with its console counterpart, hell the Sonic 06 level was replaced with Water Palace from Sonic Rush. The final boss is also far better than the 360 version, with actual challenge, more varied gameplay, and less of Sonic's friends screaming the obvious ("YEAH I KNOW YOU SAW HIM FIRE LIKE TWENTY OF THE SAME SHOTS BUT... DID YOU KNOW HE'S FIRING A HOMING SHOT???? :O").
This version of the game was also going to be ported to PSP at one point, which would've been neat as the PSP never got an actual mainline Sonic game (and lets be honest, the Rivals games are mediocre at best). There were also going to be Wii and DS versions of Generations, but these were scrapped in favor of making Sonic Colors (and is likely why many of the Sonic Colors levels are boring 2D stages, they never had much time to make anything better).

This was almost going to be done for Generations itself. There were talks of having having a third Sonic being Dreamcast/Adventure Sonic to represent the Adventure era levels, and Ryan Drummond was almost going to be returned to do voice work. However, Drummond turned down the offer as Sega was refusing to do work with his talent union (and now he will never get a second chance because he's forever known as the washed-up dude who fucked a crazy BPD fan lmfao), and eventually having a third Sonic was dropped.

The development of Generations is quite interesting, while I really love the game we got it felt like it was going to be so much more. I wish there was more information about the game's development out there.

Yeah, about that. I brought it an while after it came out; so my only options were just speedrunning the game and trying to do an handful of the missions.

The special stages, the final boss, and the Egg Emperor fight were easily the best parts of the game. But the premise of it felt an little bit rushed, in a way.

Something about Generations 3DS really turned me off, I think the boss battles were all like in a pseudo 3D (like 2.5D) looping battle arena which sucked ass. The presentation was very bad too, cutscenes were just these cheap looking powerpoint rushjobs, devoid of voice acting I think. I don't remember it playing particularly well in general.

A bunch of 3DS titles were like that. Castlevania Lords of Shadows Mirror Of Fate and Dead Or Alive Dimensions are two examples. The former had no mouth movement so it looked like they were speaking to each other in their minds while the latter were still models with dialogue and the only thing that slightly moved during scene transitions were the bobbas.

Not sure if that was a space limitation thing or an underpowered hardware thing.

I think it was more of a budget thing. 3DS was stronger than Dreamcast, yet instead of 3D models and voice acting they just slapped something cheap together. At least if it looked stylish that'd become thing, but it looked bad. I'll try to find an image of it.

Man, I would be getting a lot of mileage out of that on modern PPSSPP. I liked Rivals as a kid, but it really doesn’t hold up.

The 3DS could definitely handle FMVs, so it was probably a time constraints or “not worth the trouble” thing. And the Rush games did the same thing, so Generations 3DS had more of a pass.

Did they ever do a patch or anything for that Origins collection? I heard it was busted at release.

I saw that the French distributor Pix'n Love is putting out a collector's edition and was sorta interested.
