What's the anime canon category supposed to be? Changes made from the manga specifically for the anime that are referenced in later episodes?

*looks* uhh..I am going to guess things that Oda helped work on? I am not entirely sure because there are Anime Canon episodes that are completely canon and based on Cover Stories (Oda uses the covers to sometimes tell side stories like..what happened to certain badguys after they were defeated) Some of those matter a small amount..some of those matter a whole fucking lot.

I'm not a huge One Piece fan, however, this show seems to capture the energy I do remember from the episodes I've watched. I'll probably stick with this show until it is canceled after the third season. Judging from everyone's responses, I'm guessing there is a departure from the manga or the anime...or both! I'm fine with that, it is clear they are doing the thing every live action anime should have done; gone in its own direction while striving to capture the same feeling for the setting and characters. I think a happy compromise is growing closer to bridge anime with mainstream audiences.

Episode opens as the first ended with the crew giving Luffy WTF faces after finding out about his granddad. Back to flashbacks! (can't critique that, One Piece does these often)
Child Luffy building a ship when present Luffy just bumped into Garp. Yeah, that thing is deader than a parent in a Disney animated feature. I'm torn on this one, on one hand it's basically Garp kicking a puppy. On the other hand the actor still comes off endearing when hauling a shouting child off over his shoulder.
In the present these cannon balls feel lighter than they should be doing only superficial railing damage. Usopp when told to fire back suggests running instead but Luffy gets stubborn about fighting rather than fleeing. Surprisingly an actual real world method used by pursuing ships is mentioned by Nami, as she notes they'll steal their wind. To which Luffy's excellent Captain advice is basically "handle it" which she does while also explaining to Usopp how to load cannons.
Remember how I talked about cannon balls feeling lighter? Those he fumbles sound like plastic toys bouncing down a flight of stairs. And look like them too.
Garp continues to ban kill shots and...is that a Den-Den Mushi megaphone? Okay, fair play. After Luffy refuses to surrender Garp attempts a bit of tough love by punting a cannonball at him. Which had they not been just depicted embarassingly would be more impressive. Luffy naturally balloons to bounce it back, bringing down on the the Marine ship's sails as Koby hauls Helmeppo out of the way. Garp alternates swiftly in somewhat poor rage and magnificent full throated laughter along with amused approval. Actor remains good.
Back on the Going Merry while people are happy with this outcome it was not a planned move by Luffy which he admits.

Non-Luffy crew member discuss both where to head now they have some fog cover and the matter of talking to Luffy about his granddad. After various attempts to pass the buck Zoro is first up, makes bare minimum effort and calls it a day. Fortunately Luffy's nose is steering them onwards, as an enormous restaurant is better than fog lights for him. To the degree that he is giving competent navigation directions to Nami's justified scepticism.
Pretty cool looking Baratie. While looking smaller than the original the outside dining in the fish mouth looks cool especially since it is used as a set later so getting an external view now helps the look. Speaking of a bit more crew moments. While they're not One Piece they are Netflix One Piece
Luffy "I know what we're going to do next."
Nami "Disguise the ship so the Marines can't find us?"
Usopp "Sail back to Syrup Village where it's safe?"
Luffy "Nah. Let's eat."
Slight pause
Zoro "That fish better have a bar."
Not great dialogue but bless them, they're trying.
Baratie interior, bit too different from the original for my liking, mostly with the walls. The anime/manga felt a little bit more like a converted ship, this has the surroundings of a ballroom. The fishman on the front door was a surprise and while the costume is not great, especially given we're fresh away from Merry with no context if he is human or not this guy could just be ugly as sin.
Naturally Luffy "I will be King of the Pirates" with Usopp talking him up fail against the power of "fully booked." Nami comes through with the bribe.
After they're shown to the table Zoro starts doing something no swordsmen should and catching stuff with his sheathed weapons even getting them stuck at one point. Not a great point to make him look like an amateur given what is coming up.
Cue the kitchen and what the sweet donkey fuck is that accent Sanji? Ah I see, a "British" one. Good grief. Okay Sanji is here as is Patty without his hetrosexual life partner because tertiary characters are dropping like flies at this point. Zeff is thankfully here with a slightly better accent as he regards Sanji's prepared effort, calls it crap and tells him to stick to the menu. Naturally that results in an argument seeing in Sanji banished to waiter duty.
As he heads to the dining area unnamed pirate is arguing with Captain Fullbody. Sanji technically tries to calm matters down but when Fullbody pulls a gun both parties end up getting kicked into unconsciousness. It's not bad fighting but Luffy actually adding "good fighter" is faintly pathetic. And Sanji passing by Fullybody's dining partner without a remark is disappointing, especially given he made an earlier remark about eyeing up a blond.
To the Strawhat table.
Sanji "Hi, welcome to our shitty restaurant where the only thing worse than the ambiance is the food." By the standards of Sanji in a pissy mood about being ousted from the kitchen it seems apt. Especially since he moves to sweetness and light paragon of customer services for Nami. Zoro's vaguely sarcastic remarks to her Sanji leaves feel more fitting maybe for Usopp but they're alright. And then ruined after Usopp says, no word of a lie "Nami's got a boyfriend."
Back to the Marine ship where repairs are underway. Koby suggests contacting a nearby Marine group for aid but Garp wants to keep matters under control.
So obviously he contacts Mihawk.
DAMNIT!
Okay. So we cut to Mihawk, as with others thus far he gets his wanted poster but the bounty is noted as cancelled. He's currently, as others already confirmed, murdering Kreig's crew on some beach in an unknown location. While the actor manages an okay Mihawk I think he likely needed to put on some more muscle for this much shirtless work.
While Garp explains the target Mihawk downs half a dozen pirates and when a stray cannonball sprays him with sand slices up a nearby ship. Unfortunately as with the Straw Hats the scale is too small. They should be handling dozens of rank and file pirates at this stage, Mihawk should be going through them like Sauron in Lord of the Rings. The closest we get is the myriad of screams from the ship.

The two nicest things I can say is Mihawk confirms it was waking him from his nap merrying this reaction and does manage to down two of Kreig's men by deflecting bullets aimed at him. However sending this guy to bring someone in alive seems like a bad idea. Koby listening at the cabin door as the command is issued makes it worse.
Back at Baratie a stuffed Straw Hat crew were briefly stuffed and content until Luffy suggests a toast to their victory over the Marines. Time for the rest of the crew to drink. As I said earlier the fish mouth outside area looks quite cool, Usopp clutching some fishbowl concoction to himself shows how things are destined to go though. Especially with Zoro warning him to pace himself. He also manages a side shot at Nami's fixation on her own glass. Conversation confirms he's not thrilled with Luffy either and Nami almost lets slip on how her current village saving fund is going. While at the bar securing more drinks she arranges passage for herself only elsewhere the following day.
Marine ship. Swab those decks underlings. Helmeppo, obviously wanting to be more human to the man who saved him from a braining from falling mast asks Koby what's bothering him. He's still an ass doing so but he answers Koby's query about Mihawk, even if his explanation about the Warlord system is fairly flawed. Could be Helmeppo not knowing as much as he thinks, could be this version of the show. Either way unhappy Koby.
Back to Luffy's washing ways Sanji's enjoying laughing at him doing that while having some maudlin moments. They bond a bit over Luffy enjoying his food, Sanji complains that he should be running the Baratie but when questioned if that is his dream we get on to Sanji mentioning All Blue and Luffy egging him on to do more.
Hey Gin. Patty still manages to stop by to pitch about him feeding the guy, literally just stopping by the scene to do that. No punching a starving pirate or anything. Gin's actor is okay but he has so little to do it's hard to say. While he talks about the Grand Line after Luffy brings it up if you did not know the character you could not link it to the earlier Mihawk fight. Luffy pitches the crew offer to Sanji but he passes.
An inebriated Usopp is dancing while the other two provide negative reviews though Nami clearly has a certain envy for the lack of burdens on the guy, at least from her perspective. Zoro nudges her into a drinking game where they guess about one another and the one who's wrong drinks. He misses her by a mile considering her a big city girl used to bars like where they are. Which may or not be his actual guess since she admits something close to the truth for a rarity thus far. She nails him as an anti-social loner but that's not really a guess especially given that was a bit of a self inflicted shot since it reminds her of him many friends she now has.
Garp is going to town on some food and manages to take a break to tell Koby that listening at doors is a nasty habit when con fronted about Mihawk.
Koby: "It seems there's different rules for different pirates."
Garp: "And the ocean is blue. Is there anything else?"
Koby points out that if the laws are not fairly applied that is not what he is in for. Garp gives him the fairly honest spiel, that things are unfair and that's how it goes. Which he claims is part of the reason he always turned down the fleet admiral position since he would be forced to follow the rules more. As he points out though matters are unfair the Marines are the literal line between order and anarchy which Koby guesses he can cope with.
Usopp is getting more blitzed and bragging about their marine confrontation at the bar to his new buddy Mihawk. I refuse to believe this is intentional investigative work on Mihawk's part, he just lucked into a guy who mentioned Luffy's name. Escorted over to the others he asks about Luffy at which point Zoro recognises who's asking. While Nami tries to gloss things over Zoro invites Mihawk to a duel. I can't decide if Mihawk's actor is going for surprised or amused but we know how things go from here.
Choreboy gets critiqued at by Zeff at which point Luffy tells him Sanji will not give up on his dreams and snitches on him feeding Gin. To which Zeff naturally says "what a good kid." At which point Luffy is summoned to talk to the rest of the crew as Nami tries to get people to talk Zoro out of it. Initially Luffy tries, which is ironic given earlier he refused to flee Marines, but as soon as he confirms Zoro's reasons he's supportive, even if only lukewarm. This is likely the low point of character for the episode. While Nami trying to say anything to persuade Zoro not to to, even claiming she's his friend is kind of on point for the character as to a degree is Zoro pointing out she said she has no friends it's like Luffy's weak support. There could be a lot more here.
Dawn rises as does the contents of Usopp's stomach while Nami packs her stuff ready to leave. Of course she's a soft touch and decides to ditch the ride she arranged to see how things pan out with the duel.
The male Straw Hats roll up to the front of the Baratie where Mihawk waits, ready with a snide remark about Luffy being a short arse and an aside that he recognises that straw hat. Zoro doesn't like being ignored and so it's time for mini dagger vs two-swords. It's not a bad fight, live action was always going to struggle but there's clear effort. Nami also rejoins the onlookers at the exact moment Zoro gets stabbed with the dagger. So of course it's time for Yoru to take the stage.
I wish the last exchange worked. They have the raw material particularly with Zoro's stance but the unnecessary rather than having them both remain on the ground ruins it for me. However we now get the scene of Zoro standing to take the carving head on like a swordsmen.
Also I think the degenerate hand holding scene in one of the trailers earlier might be now, Nami getting hold of Usopp as they watch. Her look to Luffy suggests she's passing blame his way for this.
That is nowhere near enough blood. Stupid whatever rating they have. It also apparently immediately stops bleeding. Mihawk asking Luffy his goal is as usual intrigued by the ambition but I loath the words "wild cards" by now even as Mihawk acknowledges it's too soon for Zoro to die as he leaves.
Usopp: "He's losing so much blood." NO HE ISN'T, HE'S NOT EVEN BLEEDING AT THIS POINT. STUPID LACK OF GORE. Zoro makes his never losing vow before going unconscious and damnit all this episode was so close so often.

I have a sneaking suspicion you might be right. I'd put money they already have/started working on more material for season 2. My personal bet at this point is they are hoping to do to the end of Alabaster within 3 series but if so that's close to 5 years off airing. At that point even if by some miracle it's a hit they'll still stop because the changes they made for this run will start hitting them in the ass more.

So, I went and watched the Japanese dub of the Live Action. Mostly to answer a question of does this work with the OG cast, is it truly One Piece, ya know, big 'tisim questions.
They're a little more subdued due to doing more...subdued/natural(?) versions of their usual voices. The One Piece humor comes out more. The "Not a Crew" bits become more of a classic One Piece gag, Buggy is even more Buggy-like, etc. It's also Akemi Okamura 2nd best version of Nami's Help Me scene.
After two watch-throughs, my full thought of the series is well...
The best way I can put is the barrel scene. Even with the changes they made, I smiled. They earned the barrel scene, they earned playing "We Are" at the end. I'm satisfied. I pray for them for the beast that is the Alabasta Saga.

The best way I can put is the barrel scene. Even with the changes they made, I smiled. They earned the barrel scene, they earned playing "We Are" at the end. I'm satisfied. I pray for them for the beast that is the Alabasta Saga.

And my personal desire is that the live action series somehow gets to Momoiro Island. Imagine actors having to depict trannies as the disgusting freaks that they are. The Sanji grooming shit and Sanji is a transphobe fallout would be glorious.

I bet they Cut Little Garden if they do Alabasta, though honestly if you are gonna cut things down..you could probably mix Eneis Lobby and Alabasta and just have CP9 trying to make a move on Robin while Crocodile is fighting Luffy....you would have to introduce Robin earlier but you can shove her into little garden and have her play a bit of Bon Clay's "we made friends before we found out we were working for different groups" thing.

Watched the first episode of the live action. As a complete outsider... I really liked it. It actually wasn't ass. It actually made me interested to read the manga. Now tell me, do we get to see this Nami in a bikini or did Netflix just keep her in the T shirt all 8 episodes
Horny aside, i really liked Luffy. He was like how BestGuyEver described the little monkey, and the absolute optimism of this lad could power the planet for a hundred years if you hooked him to the grid. Costumes looked great too. Axe arm dude had a slick metal jaw that actually looked like a old prop from the 90's and not a cgi abomination. I can fuck with that. I'm stoked to watch more.

I think the problem with the Mihawk fight is that, without the inner monologue, music and Zoro's actor really restraining himself on expressions; it doesn't have any of the desperation that made it impactful. As well as, again, them changing Mihawk's introduction to be far more casual than foreboding.

Dude, it's that 1000 episode Wang that's made it very daunting. Say what you will, the adaption is interesting enough to me that I want to read the first few arcs at least. If I like it, then I'll get through it (in a few years lol)

Agreed, plus it’s crazy how fast the manga actually reads. Which is why I always tell people if they are losing interest in the anime to just read the manga instead, at least for a while. Like Dressrosa is just such a hard watch in the anime even to this day because Toei felt the need to drag everything out to the max and had to make it so the first seven minutes of every episode was “last time on One Piece shit”. But reading through Dressrosa it is just so much better.

If Netflix was smart they would pay Toei to offer a One Pace version of the anime, the One Piece Kai version.
In a way I'm glad people are liking the show enough to give the anime/manga a try, but at the same time the show feels so bastardized with characters, I'd say Zoro especially, I'm worried it's going to bring in the wrong people into this series. These are already the same fags who get upset with the Nami and Robin fanservice they see from clips on twitter, let them be denied into this community and go back to sucking the anime of the season's dick.

I didn't watch the live action series yet but I saw pictures and what I like is that the characters actually look very similar to their manga/anime versions. That's what Marvel rarely does. Have you seen the movie version of Kraven the Hunter?
