because back then it legitimately produced some of the best content on all of the internet, and you had genuine professionals doing tons of interesting shit that were sharing stuff you couldn't find anywhere on the internet.

the forums were genuinely the best place to hang out on the internet until like, 2006+ when the mod takeover by fat cat ladies was almost completed, and become unbearable to be on after Obama was elected

Ebay was existent back around 1998. Before all financial encryption of today, people literally sent their information by email. As far as the list of goon deaths, Caro is probably alive. He was in a torture prison for a long fucking time but eventually got swapped in a prisoner exchange and when I spoke to him some time ago, he was living in LA, largely penniless (due to his actions overseas being federal crimes, he is ineligible for any benefits such as social security etc).

There was a period when it didn't have a paywall. Lowtax put it up because he got tired of retards showing up, and also because he got tired of people just immediately making new accounts right after being banned. This was back when $10 was a little more meaningful.

There was a front page that had funny articles from Lowtax and his friends, and people would make proto-memes with Photoshop that could also be fun. The community was entertaining and creative and there was drama, lowcows, and all sorts of discussion.

It had a few piracy forums as well, eventually these had to be spun off from the main site but at least a couple descendants of them are still active. That's where you would have downloaded your music, porn, and your copy of Photoshop.

This is correct, but the $10 policy was instituted really early, I think probably 2000 or 2001. Most goons had to pay the ten bucks.
