So essentially it is complicated and suffice to say while you're correct if someone was masculine enough in deed and merit then it was not mocked just not really brought up often, especially if the man in question also fucked women.
He defended his uncle because it had been used to discredit him and his bloodline, he also took personal affront with it being used in such a way obviously being bisexual himself. At the end of the day you could get fucked but you could not be a craven and if wit and strength failed you then you had no business in the affairs of men. It's like a three strike policy and being gay alone was one strike so avoid two and three and you'd be fine, we hear it most often with the most degenerate of Rome. In a way it's much like the modern day.
