Sony claims Microsoft’s ‘true strategy’ is to ‘make PlayStation like Nintendo’

Unstoppable, self-sustainable on its own franchises, and beloved worldwide?

in that it does not compete in this space.

“Microsoft claims that Nintendo’s differentiated model demonstrates that PlayStation doesn’t need Call of Duty to compete effectively. But this reveals Microsoft’s true strategy,” SIE’s statement reads. “Microsoft wants PlayStation to become like Nintendo, so that it would be a less close and effective competitor to Xbox.
Oh, well, that would be really good for Sony. Maybe they'd finally get back to funding some quality games for once rather than an endless stream of capeshit and wannabe movies.

Gran Turismo 7 will finally be adding the ability to sell cars, which was said back in April (?), when the game got review bombed. Also three new cars, some Red Bull GT car (?), and Road Atlanta will be added.

The prices for the Hagerty Legendary Car vendor is set to change though, so we'll have to see how bad the inflation is this time.
Sony really needs to start some internal competition and get one of their studios to make a proper racing game. Kazunori Yamauchi has been sitting on his ass for way too long.

Oh wow, the horror! Imagine making games and selling consoles?!

I'm still baffled as to how Sony lets PD get away with much longer development cycles for the GT games (5 years), than most other games do, and yet GT7 still lacked numerous features on launch, and still lacks them to this day.

>Sony openly admits that they’re incapable of making good games that can compete with everyone else, including their primary competitors, and that they need to rely on third parties to stay afloat
>they view this as a positive

There aren’t enough moons in the world for this statement. Their legal justification for why the deal shouldn’t go through is literally “because we’d have to actually try”.

"Differentiated model", aye, like branching out into various different genres, appealing to all sorts of gamers? Both making unique games like Fire Emblem, Grounded, Flight Sim, Splatoon and Age of Empires? Naaah, that's not a model to strive after! Who needs teams like Obsidian and R&D1, we have Naughty Dogs!

We can all laugh at how retarded that statement is, but you know the regulators are going to eat it up.

Meanwhile:

Microsoft: "Nintendo offers a broader range of mature content than Xbox"

The Issues Statement suggests that Sony is Microsoft’s closest competitor in gaming consoles. By contrast, the Issues Statement contends that Nintendo offers differentiated hardware and content aimed primarily at a different (e.g., more ‘family-friendly’) customer segment. The suggestion that Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo are not close competitors is incorrect.

Nintendo offers a broader range of mature content than Xbox: The CMA has mischaracterised the Nintendo Switch as being predominantly for families. Such a characterisation neglects the fact that more mature/adult games are available on the Switch and are actively marketed, including on Switch’s YouTube channel. These games include Apex Legends, The Witcher 3, Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, Cult of the Lamb, NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, Alan Wake Remastered, Crysis Remastered, Outlast, Little Nightmares, Five Nights at Freddy’s and Life is Strange.

Recent Switch exclusives have received mature ratings: Several of Nintendo Switch’s latest exclusives have been distinctly non “family-friendly” games. Bayonetta 3, a third-party action game by Platinum Games, was rated as Mature by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (“ESRB”) for violence, blood and gore, partial nudity and strong language. Likewise, third-party exclusive Shin Megami Tensei V, released in November last year, was rated Mature by the ESRB for blood, partial nudity, sexual themes and violence, noting that “[t]he game depicts several female monsters with partially exposed breasts and buttocks; one creature appears with a phallic-shaped head and torso. A handful of demons (e.g., Succubus, Incubus) are described with sexual characteristics ….. The words “f*k” and “sht” appear in the game.” Despite this content clearly not being “family-friendly”, both games have been actively marketed by Nintendo including at Nintendo Direct presentations where the company markets and presents its latest content. This is evidence that Nintendo Switch is not just a console aimed at the family friendly customer segment but more broadly at a diverse group of gamers across all demographics.

Sony: Waah not good enough.
But it's true, nobody wants flying hovercrafts

If the deal gets outright canceled or blocked it would be interesting to watch how Microsoft would react because it's sounding like they're wanting to avoid further investigation. Or maybe there would be an outcome where activision gets sold off in pieces and reformed into separate entities. Personally I have not seen a large anti-trust thing go the opposite way on this scale in a long time and the fact that there's a hint of something going south is rather unique. They should have blocked the Disney Fox merger in the same way but nothing happened there as far as generating any resistance.

That game sucks, no argument here. But as a franchise, Battlefield still sells millions and has a large, dedicated fanbase. It doesn't CoD do numbers, but big whoop. The framing of the argument from Sony is if they lose CoD, when Phil has stated multiple times won't happen, and offered several deals to guarantee it for Sony. So any argument from Sony I've been taking with a huge grain of "Fuck off, Jim Ryan".

Sony acting like Battlefield doesn't exist lol
it really doesn't anymore, no one is gonna buy a playstation 5 to play battlefield 1 (maybe V). with EA in general and dice specifically, the next battlefield will be the equivalent of a used diaper, just in a bluray case.
even EA doesn't consider battlefield to be a major brand anymore.

EDIT:
to be aware what we're dealing with here, here's a nice little paragraph from the conference call earlier this year:
Miele then outlined several key factors that EA higher-ups believe caused Battlefield 2042‘s extremely disappointing launch. The use of the Frostbite engine was a major issue–having built the game on this engine initially, over 18 months of development time was needed to update the tech to power 2042. “All new tech, it was basically a new engine. They went back. The Frostbite version they were on was so old they had to go back and update. So it was basically putting the game on a new engine,” Miele said.
"so old" that fucking battlefield 3 looked better and was less of a clusterfuck. let that sink in for a moment.

also, EA's master plan to get battlefield back on track? hire a dude responsible for cod and destiny, working under the dude who did cod and titanfall (as much as I like tf1, it ain't no battlefield).

Nintendo seems to be moving away from the gimmick shit though, to their betterment. Aside from being a hybrid, the Switch is a refreshingly straightforward console, and the Switch lite doesn't even have the hybrid part going for it. And considering how successful the little Steam box is, releasing a "599+ freedom bucks console" with Nintendo's name on it wouldn't be retarded at all.

Somewhat off-topic rant but since the Deck and Switch got brought up:

Remember when the Switch launched how Nintendo heavily promoted all the advance motion sensing, HD Rumble, IR camera features and all other bells and whistles the Joy-Cons had inside? Turns out that what matters most to people is for the joysticks not to drift. No matter how much Nintendo wanted to continue peddling those Wii era motion control gimmicks, nobody cares about any of that. The Switch Lite is kinda their admission that the Joy-Cons were over engineered devices with no real audience. Just give players buttons, joystics, dpad, touch screen (and gyro if you are feeling generous) and that's all they need. Motion controls only make sense in VR, outside of that, keep that crap out of regular games.

Nintendo is never going to release a $600 device because that would not appeal to a mainstream audience and because there is an unassailable difference to their way of doing things that completely denies the possibility to emulate what the Steam Deck has achieved.

Valve achieved success with the Deck for two main reasons: They delivered a device with balanced and modern specs at an aggressive price. they are most likely losing money on each Deck sold but by selling games on Steam they can easily recoup those loses. Most importantly, and this is a key aspect that Nintendo will never be able or willing to imitate: The Steam Deck is an open platform, the Steam Deck is not a console, it is a PC inside of a handheld shaped shell. You can install and do with it whatever you want: emulators, non-Steam games and community creations are welcomed on the device. Valve straight up included a option to quit out of game mode and enter a full desktop environment. It is this openness and freedom that has invited all sort of community support, mods, software development and improvement that Valve has embraced with open arms and has used to continually update the Deck.

Nintendo's hardware philosophy is to take old and cheap well established and known tech to produce their consoles ( The Tegra X1 chipset was already 2 year old when the Switch launched in 2017) to ensure they can profit from each hardware sales, they have learned that trying to compete against others with cutting edge tech it is not a model they find lucrative so they rather release a device that is relatively "obsolete" but "good enough" for their needs and to be sold at a mass market price. It is a strategy that has served them well and there is no indication that they'll change it in the future.

Another aspect of Nintendo's philosophy is to aggressively make sure that their walled garden is secured and firmly gatekept. Shutting down any and all fan community projects or mods to the Switch is a mandate they enforce ruthlessly. Nintendo's actions speak volumes as to how much they despise the concept of community contributions. It is their way or the highway. Nintendo recently DMCAd a fan website called SteamGrids. This website lets people download custom banners and art to personalize Steam game profiles. It just so happens that if you used emulators you could also download banners to decorate each game ROM profile with their own art. Nintendo DMCAd them over images of various Switch games, NOT for hosting ROMS but over literal JPEGS! It's beyond petty for them to do that.

Bringing this back to being on-topic: inadvertently by releasing their titles on Steam now Sony has a presence in the handheld space again thanks to the Deck. I think it is for the best for Sony to let Valve handle the hardware side because Sony proved with the PS Vita that they are not up to the task of manage or market a handheld of their own. If Sony had any sense they should remaster and release a lot of their Vita exclusives on Steam with special modes that fit with the Steam Deck's interface . ( And yes, a Gravity Rush 1 and 2 bundle should be on top of that list because arguably the Vita's best game, Persona 4 Golden, already is on Steam).

There isn't anything much that does give a strong incentive when the primary games on the Switch system are japanese and indie, both scenes that rely a lot more on art direction than graphic fidelity. The jumps between console generations have also gotten smaller enough for mobile tech to catch up (with the Switch in 2017 then the Deck in 2021).

And there was an old japanese comment on 5ch that summed up well the whole thing:
一般人はSwitch、マニアはsteam deck、統失はPS5
Switch for normal people, Steam Deck for enthusiasts, PS5 for schizos.

This does makes me wonder. How powerful is a Deck when compared to a PS5 or PS4? I assume they are on a similar ballpark
