"My computer was working great last night [but] this morning it says, 'Microsoft Legal Agreement' with bunch of legal information and WAY at the bottom 'Accept your new Windows 10' or 'Decline,'" wrote a someone identified as scifixtion in a Friday post to Microsoft's support forum. "I hit Decline and it says, 'It will take a few moments to go back to your old Windows software,' [but] then it goes black and go[es] right back to [the] Microsoft legal agreement [and shows] 'Accept windows 10' or 'Decline.' I've hit Decline a dozen times and it won't budge."

The legal agreement that scifixtion referenced was the Windows 10 end-user license agreement, or EULA.

Microsoft making stuff that works is the reason they're so aggressively pushing 10.

XP worked so well that millions of businesses, organizations, and government departments didn't want to invest in upgrading from it, so they had to extend the support lifecycle of the OS for longer than they wanted to. 7's so popular that it's looking like they're going to face the same problem when that starts to come of age. By aggressively pushing 10, giving it out for free, they can get everyone onto one platform, don't have to spend money propping up older operating systems (7, as well as Vista and 8 for those that adopted them) for as long, and can, with 10's more aggressive update system, make sure that everyone stays updated whether they want to or not.

Supposedly, 10's going to be it as far as Windows goes. Taking on the Apple model means that they can push out smaller updates more frequently that affect things (mostly) under the hood under the theory that one of the reasons businesses aren't willing to make big leaps from Windows version to version is that what they have works and it takes a lot of money upgrade computer systems, to install the OSes and compatible software, as well as re-train employees. Upgrading will be less daunting if the updates are cheaper and much smaller (akin to say, OS X Leopard to Mountain Lion versus Windows 7 to 8) and can be pushed out overnight versus having to take every PC in the enterprise down to install something.

Or they just want to mine your personal data to sell to advertisers/the NSA. That would explain trying to sneak all the spyware into 7 and 8.1.

Probably some of that too, though I doubt it's that dramatic. And I doubt the NSA needs Microsoft's help directly in getting your info.

I think backporting it to 7/8.1 was more because they expect most users to upgrade. If they backport the data collection elements to run while you're still on 7/8, you'll have a profile built for you for Cortana and voice and handwriting recognition when you upgrade and it'll work that much more efficiently more quickly. And you can shut that all off, of course.

Hasn't it been shown that they remotely turn it all back on? And the "handwriting recognition" is a fancy term for keylogger.

God, fucking Microsoft.

Okay, so I work in a multimedia company, yeah? yeah- and part of it includes radio broadcasting. Now, the radio software we use is specially programmed to work only on Windows 7 - anything higher and you're fucked. And if this fucked computer is one of your on-air computers, you are doubly fucked because then you're losing thousands of dollars an hour in revenue. Thankfully I (the fucking sap that gets to work IT at this station) found out about Microsoft's little shitshow before it could affect any of these computers, but I still had to contend with about another dozen computers and make sure they go Win-10 and possibly screw up their programs.

And that was just the local building. Today I had to drive 140 miles to our sister building and to fix the networking clusterfuck that happened when a couple of mission critical computers did upgrade to Win-10 without the user's permission.

So yeah... not a real big fan about this, Microsoft. I think I'm gonna stay with my Win 7 Ultimate and you can go blow yourselves with an industrial strength shop-vac.

*insert Mac/Windows/Linux comments section fan-sperg war here*

Seriously we need a thread to make fun of people like this. This whole Windows 10 thing brought them out of the woodwork like mad.

I bet the station I used to work at that ran everything out of an ancient DOS-based machine is still bopping along like always.

I don't think I can actually upgrade my pirated copy of 7 on my PC. Had to upgrade my laptop from 8 to 10 though because of how much cocks Windows 8 sucks and I can't install 7 on there due to some digital signature bullshit or whatever. Same goes for my Surface Pro 3.

I'll use 7 as long as possible.

Win 10 is definitely a huge improvement from Win 8, but then, so is drilling holes in your head with an auger.

While I've had great stability and compatability so far with Windows 10, I don't feel like it's the same premium (for lack of a better word) OS anymore, it reminds me more of a kindle with ads now. There wasn't any eye pollution with Windows 7, and in today's tech world, it's odd for me to see paid software with ads, even if they are just ads for shit in the windows store like "groove music."

If you have Powershell, you can completely remove the Windows Store. I've had it out for about a week now and it doesn't seem to have had much of an effect.

I think they may also have used as a psychological tactic in order to try to get people to "get it while they can"
Didn't work on my dad (who still toils away on his decade old Pentium III (or IV) running WinXP.

Just use Windows 7 with no updates.
That's what I did (have yet to get the message but I bought a new PC with Win 10 on it anyway).

If the rumors are true, and MSFT plans on making Windows free but ad-supported, there is going to be a significant increase in FOSSperating systems (aka Linux). It obviously won't replace Windows, but there will be enough of an increase in Linux market share that Linux systems will become a consideration when deciding what systems to make a software for.

Please elaborate on why this would happen

Scaremongering by opportunistic developers. All they have to do is overblow the extent to which MSFT tracks activities. Since a good bit of people use computers mostly for word processing and internet, if it looks like Windows and acts like Windows, then for all intents and purposes it is Windows. This of course will require "baby mode" Linux since when someone screws it up, they detonate it.
