I don't follow. That money has already been paid out to the schools - what stops the DoE from just not seeking repayment?

(For the record, I'm not saying he should do this, I'm asking why he supposedly can't)
yeah this is a bullshit argument and I don't know why people make it. debts get cancelled all the time. the people holding the debt will just not get paid. that's the risk every lender takes, and there is no reason to treat student loan debt in this magical different way.

now the not-stupid, not-bullshit argument is that it will be too destructive and chaotic to declare such a huge jubilee. I agree that student loan forgiveness needs to happen in an organized way, analogous to bankruptcy, but the longer people kick this can down the road the less a functional jubilee will be possible.

There is some interesting economic analysis of credit and debt and how to keep it from destroying your society happening that involves the ancient practice of debt jubilees but I honestly don't know if we have enough time as a society for these ideas to make their way out of the academy and into policy.

The debt of student loans in the US is about 1.58 trillion dollars, this is not the sort of debt you can just brush under the rug, this defit matter for the american coin and any news of the american goverment just excusing this amount of money would mean further devaluation of the dollar, which is just wonderfull in a nation suffering with inflation.

Biden might get some hurrays if he forgive student debt loans, but the hurt will be 10X worse when shit hits the fan.
Those college graduates don't comprehend that nor would they give a shit.

I’m not too familiar with the Court, is he more inclined to be reasonable and compromise with the conservative justices or is he solidly an activist judge?
Breyer was appointed by Bill Clinton and is seen as a more left leaning judge.

Solidly activist, but significantly better at couching it in legalese instead of spouting twitter hot takes like Kagan and Sotomayor

ACLJ floated the idea that this could be a way to drop Kamala without losing face
What, by nominating her for the court? That'd be the political equivalent of Biden stepping on a rake. No way the RINOs get on board with putting one of the most divisive democrats on the bench.

Okay, so there’s no real potential negative consequences of Biden replacing him. At worst we just get another activist judge who always votes blue.

Losing Breyer just means swapping out one rubber-stamp leftist judge for another and won't affect the status quo one iota. We're almost certain to get another Sotomayor-tier retard in his place though, so there are going to be some amusing dissents to read in the future.

So just another day for Biden

It almost took a Democrat supermajority in the Senate to get the Wise Latina on the bench, unless Biden's West Wing cosplayer staff have completely lost their marbles, the nominee's going to be some Uniparty snake who's good at feigning moderation like Merrick Garland was.

This woman argued to keep people in prison to meet the labor quotas. I wouldn't want her managing a Taco Bell much less sitting on the Supreme Court.

no, I comprehend it but I also comprehend justice - what that really means, not the woke version

the form this argument is taking is very similar to the arguments about compensating slaveowners for the loss of their property, which is of course something that is radioactive and can't be brought in in current year. you have competing claims. The people who have the stronger claim on the grounds of justice and moral right - the people who are suffering under what is a form of debt slavery, even though it's a very mild form - are the people who are much much weaker. The strong people with power are the ones holding the debt, and they have a clear legal right to collect that debt. But they also have an equally clear moral obligation to use their power to make things right, not just to be in alignment with abstract moral principles, but because by continuing to insist on their legal right to collect the debt, they are shitting up the society they and their children have to live in.

This is why God sent His Son to die for us, because it takes that much to get people to even consider not being total dickwads and do a fraction of what they obviously ought to in order to have a good world to live in. This is why that story is told with the language of debt and forgiveness of debt. When people fart at you about how the US is constantly on the verge of being a Christian theocracy tell them that the very first item on the agenda of such a theocracy would be forgiving student debt.

Shame we missed out on the nuclear rage of a 7-2 "conservative" SCOTUS, but I'll live.
A bird in a hand is better than two in a bush.

Now the Democrats will most likely just push for it on their own or cuck out of decorum because of the midterms as Manchin doesn't want to be seen nominating some uber liberal tranny nigger to the SCOTUS.

Breyer stepping down makes perfect sense. The November midterms are looking to be a absolute bloodbath for the Democrats and they don't want to risk Republicans getting back control and stalling until the next Republican President.

They will simply find another Garland.

Someone who the press will swear up and down is "moderate" but is nothing but a Democrat hatchet man.
