Possibly none of the above. At the end of the Utena movie, some of the characters literally turn into automobiles. What are we supposed to glean from that? Who the fuck knows. Maybe he just wanted a car chase scene.

My point here is people (including Zac) are always trying to twist shit to their agenda. Oftentimes in the most strenuous ways imaginable. If people are going to say he's trans, I'm gonna say he identifies as a Honda Civic. There's about as much proof for that as the other thing.

This stuff used to just be hand waived away as "Lol Japan."

I always viewed that ending as a way of conveying that Utena still doesn’t have any control in her life, so in a sense the prince has turned into a princess therefore the princess has to be the prince here and save Utena at the same time take control of both their agencies in order to be free, cars do symbolize freedom in a sense.

"Anime conventions" basically became irrelevant/obsolete when video rooms lost their value (ie. when streaming/downloading removed the value in going to a con to see new stuff). Since then, they've just turned into a cash cow for all manner of shady people to bilk a bunch of stupid kids out of the money mommy & daddy give them to stay out of their hair for a weekend. If volunteers ever open their eyes to how they're being exploited and walk away en masse, then the whole thing will likely implode.

Anime conventions are extremely important to costhots, and will likely never be irrelevant to them. They need the attention, and that's the number one place they get it.

They are also, I suppose, useful if you want to meet one of the GoHs.

But yes, they have lost a lot of their relevance in many other respects. You can even order shit direct from Japan nowadays.

Considering which company logo you see right at the start of the movie, I've always assumed that they wanted a scene that they could easily spin-off into another Utena Sega Saturn or Dreamcast game.

Now they are saying they can't report on what happened because his family has not made it public. However, it is obvious he offed himself because he was working from home so there was no way he was getting COVID.

Also how much trolling do you think is going to be at the memorial service since they confirmed there will be a chat?

INB4 "Zac's Ghost" appears in the chat

With ANN hurting for money as they have for the last year and a half,I expect them to milk this to get more cash donations as much as they can.

Probably going off on a tangent, that's the one thing as a former state resident, I want to give credence to. For everything crazy and fucking insane the state has going for it, Florida at least isn't dragging the rest of the country down into its cesspit along with it, unlike, you know, southern/Orange County California. Well, yet, if any revisits have to say anything, but I digress. At least Florida has well LIFE to its ecosystem, while where South California will likely be reclaimed by the desert as time and wildfires tells. And I'm very sure its vibrant lushness is why Walt Disney chose the state as his foreground for his City of Tomorrow. There's a reason why it's called Disney WORLD. Disneyland, for the longest time of me, ain't got shit. I am always humored by the idea Walt himself is fucking with the current "Disney California" plans out above because even he knew how fucky Hollywood could and would get.

For all of South Cal's problems, at least it contained Zac Bertschy there for every moment of his waking life, thankfully. He wouldn't survive, let alone be worthy, to walk Florida's soil.

Florida gets a bad rap, most people that talk shit about Florida have probably never been there.

I'm not saying Florida Man doesn't get up to some crazy stuff, just that there's more to Florida than just Florida Man.

I think Zac NEVER should've gotten into the "anime industry" simply because of why he got into anime itself in the first place. Zac was a hardcore Evangelion fanboy because he saw himself in it and felt it spoke to him in that angsty teen way that lots of people feel but most grow out of. Instead, he made anime his job and wallowed in it. All the time. The fact that he was supposed to be a functioning adult when he found "Flowers of Evil" a trash anime about MORE teen angst and "the world doesn't fucking understand me" and all that and again found himself in it really tells you all you need to know.

I don't celebrate his death, death is never something to cheer for. But the guy apparently did everything he could to not grow up. And not in that "I want to always play like a 10 year old" Peter Pan way, but in that kind of chuunibyou but more emo-narcissist kind of way.

Evangelion had a pretty clear message about breaking the cycle of self loathing I feel, it's too bad it went over Zac's head.

I think they're still relevant as a place to simply meet other fans, look at everyone's cosplay and maybe buy some merchandise without having to have the sometimes long waits from buying stuff directly from Japan.

"lol Japan" used to be such a big part of weeb culture but it seems like people forget now how different and strange they can be, people are too used to Japan and forget that it's still a different culture with it's own way of doing things.

With ANN hurting for money as they have for the last year and a half,I expect them to tard cum this to get more cash donations as much as they can.

For all the site's many faults it is a pretty good database for release dates and other info.

Just catching up on the thread and just throwing everything in one post.

Upon first reading the news, I was a bit sad. Sad that he wouldn't have the possible comeuppance when the Vic thing finally ended. If the best revenge is living well, the ISWV was already getting its revenge: Vic is still doing shows and seems quite successful, while his detractors are floundering. Only thing that was missing was the forced awareness on the ANN staff a successful legal case would bring.

For years Zac practiced cancel culture by writing your typical progressive click-bait, hit piece trash in the hopes of getting his targets cancelled and potentially fired. Never did he actually reflect on the consequences of his own actions and whether or not the chain of event's he participated in could lead to job losses, stress on his targets family life or potentially even the suicide of those whose reputations he tarnished.
Suicide is painless, as the song goes; especially compared to confronting your deeds. I hoped that someday maybe he'd rethink what he'd become, indulge in some self-reflection... but then again, cows never do, do they? Or else they wouldn't be cows to begin with.

No, after reading those SA bits someone found, and various other biographical bits, I'm pretty sure he never outgrew his prudish upbringing. He just found a [CURRENT YEAR] "socially acceptable" way of channeling that judgmental side. When the winds of change blow, he'd have probably have blown with them if he could survive the cognitive dissonance.

Zac is a lesson in the foolishness of making your hobby into your job. I liked anime and anime conventions and all that dumb shit when I was a teenager and in college. If I'm looking down the barrel of my 30s, though, and I still have to care about anime and online anime fandom as much as I did when I was 19, because it's my job and it's the only thing I can do to make any kind of a living? Shit, leaving aside the whole trash fire of a personal life, that alone would make me think about suicide.
"Happy is the man who can make a living by his hobby." - Henry Higgins, Pygmalion

Making a living off your hobby, in an incidental fashion, is great, as long as it remains your hobby... Which is different from making your hobby your job. Especially long after the spark of passion for that hobby has fled.

It's like "games journalism" all over again, people who thought it would be cool to work in the video game industry and fandom circles when they were young growing out if it. Eventually they hate the thing they once loved, or the fans or community around their one-time interest. They turned an escape into a career... no, a life-long, dead-end job, and they're bitter about it.

One might say tim rogers dodged this bullet when he quit Kotaku to make a mobile game. Notch, too, by selling out to Microsoft.

"When I became a man, I put away childish things." I don't have a hell of a lot of time for the apostle Paul, but he got it right on that one.
Relevant movie clip.
In the modern era you don't entirely have to put away all the childish things, but you do have to grow the fuck up and moderate your intake a little. Reading this thread, between the relationship shitposts on SA and the Disney trips while owing the IRS $20k it didn't seem like that was happening. WAIT, HE WAS 40? OH, FFS.

The more I read about this Zac the more I feel like he was pushed by his so called "dear friends" by doing what he did.

No one seems to have any real attachment to the guy and his life choices are pretty much all on him, still not one of his friends nor fans ever did anything to help him with his own struggles/interior demons. Plus being literally and old fart with no family nor relationship (beside a very toxic one with a digger who even trooned out, making his condition even worse) and even family issues due to his "inclinations".

In the end, it's no wonder things came out this way, the signals were all there and he didn't seek nor receive the professional help he needed. The only sad thing that remains is his family suffering (doubt his "friends" really are suffering as they say on socials), not shocked a bit that no one on the web cares about him at all, he didn't have a nice character himself nor did he ever change himself to be better. Always an entitled and idiotic sjw with unhealthy customs&relations, no pity from me.
This. After reading the thread, I'm having a hard time working on my tap-dance moves. In some ways he's a victim of the sociopaths around him; he's a victim of his upbringing. Though, at the same time, he likely had several opportunities to break away from this path, and didn't. 15 years just at ANN? Yikes. Learn to diversify, learn to start over.

What a loser, he could at least have waited till his cats passed away till he did it.

poor cats having to be rehomed now.
Was it suicide or did he have an aneurysm from someone's stupidity? "Now my goddamn cat is homeless."

Seriously though, when I first read it, I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the "survived by his two babies," being his cats... *cringe*

Still feel a bit sorry for how it turned out for Zak.

It's just a shame he couldn't get help beforehand.

Methinks perhaps he deliberately chose the pandemic era to die to make things even more cloudy as to exactly how he offed himself?

Doubt it. If a guy wants to die he isn't going to give a fuck how it looks. Men aren't women. Men don't care how it looks. Men don't half ass suicide for attention like women do. He hit his 40th and decided to cash out. Given the toxic relationship he was stuck in with Hope and his financial situation its quite understandable.

Zac died before he could bitch about Kevin Smith's He-man cartoon.

Chances are unless it turned out like She-Ra did where every character is either some combination of gay, black, or fat, he'd have hated it.

Honestly, the timing of his suicide is a bit of dark comedy when you realize there's a good chance he killed himself immediately after the Snyder Cut was announced to be coming out. Snyderbros may have blood on their hands..

I just remembered that he joked once on a podcast episode that his quote of "one of, if not the, greatest anime of all time" about Fullmetal Alchemist would be "written on his gravestone"

I'm not gonna lie, it makes me sad that this knucklehead is gone, the way I see it there's two types of SJWs, the truly evil ones that originate this bullshit and the ones that due to personal issues get swept up in the whirlwind of it and lack the ability to fight against it.

If only the dude hadn't suffered from such a lack of self worth maybe he could have had the backbone to stand up for himself against it and he'd still be with us and would be a better person, I really can't help but wonder that if our culture hadn't become so toxic and SJWism wasn't a thing in the first place if he'd still be with us.

Others may feel differently and that's fine but I do think there's a tragic element here, I think there was wasted potential.
