This was a direct consequence of TCG exclusive archetypes sucking absolute balls early on. In the case of SPYRAL for example, Double Helix as a card wasn't all that impressive on it's own, but the synergy it possessed with Master Planner that made the archetype go nuclear (though Quik-Fix was waiting on a massive plussing combo to break it wide open), and Spyral without Double Helix after all the support was a moderately alright deck due to access to Link 4s and easy Tri-Gate Wizard plays.
Before that, we had Noble Knights who couldn't do shit and needed the OCG to invent Isolde and new knights + Morrigan, Ultra Athletes which are getting revamped if current teasers are indication.

Spyral in particular is some good nostalgia for me, especially when it was getting dumpstered despite each wave of support making it a stupidly strong Link archetype due to easily summonable bodies, near perfect consistency, and OTK potential. Everyone was dickriding Subterrors despite being a shitty flip archetype and every set swore up and down they'd get the "One card" not realizing the meta TCG archetypes got their "One card" in the first wave. For B.A. It was Dante and was meta out the gate. For SPYRALs it was Quik-Fix, Red Car and Master Planner, 2 from the first set, one from the second.
I remember arguing with some idiot when the SPYRAL cards were being revealed one at a time that thought you should ditch Super Agent entirely and just run rank 1 spam with Quik-Fix using Number 93 which was a prize card at the time (grats to it getting a proper non-prize card print recently by the way to Number Hunters).

Oh the horror. I still remember the dreaded SPYRAL environment where the opponent had a 3-monster co-linked Tri-gate, Two unused Firewall Dragons, a Bagooska, a Double Helix on the opponent's field, and the hopelessness of knowing the next card I draw is going to get quickly shot down. I know Subterrors got more hype so they needed to sell SPYRAL, but damn… it was horrible.
And the aftermath? The next year I FINALLY got what I wished for when a cool-looking Zombie Ritual theme came along… only vo find myself burying the deck parts deep into my storage because even Skull Servants have better potential.

Spamming No. 93 is an eye-opening. Never realized it didn't have the OPT rule. Too bad it's almost impossible now, though :(

It's not even that Subterrors were more hyped due to being better, it's that the guys that swore up and down they'd be meta forgot that Meta decks are 100% built on highly abusable cards and high consistency options. Infernity being meta relied almost entirely on Archfiend, Mirage, and Necromancer not having hard OPT effects in conjuction with Launcher, Barrier, Break and magically forming level 8 with Avenger (1+3+4).
Burning Abyss were meta with 4 cards by forming the OG PK-Fire list, which could contend with full power Shaddolls. SPYRALS had all the tools to make busted fields and all Double Helix did was add a really gross combo to summon Master Plan for free, then get a free +3 cards by linking up, then double-tapping to go +6 off the entire mid-combo play before actually popping off with Quik Fix.

Subterrors never had good cards, it was just that SPYRAL Sleeper, the finisher, was the last card in the last wave of support, so Subterrors were only marginally more playable to start, which caused people to latch on hard despite Spyral getting +12 plays before Double Helix showed up and let them go even further beyond.

Vendreads were sad, because they knew exactly what they were doing with the restrictions but refusing to lift them, leaving it an overbalanced mess. I want to say Vendreads were like Subterrors and that they never had good cards, but that's off because they have really good ritual spells, they just fucked up on all the ritual foddrr monsters needing to be on the field and not working from Grave or Hand.

It's pretty much why you shouldn't rely on 2chan for theme evaluations. They usually underestimate or overestimate shit, unless things are INCREDIBLY obvious.

Hell, I remember the Machine thread going all apeshit on the new Gimmick Puppet cards from the new Duelist Pack saying they were all useless and weak compared to the Evil Heroes who also got a revamp in the same pack. While it's true Aduster Gold and Malicious Bane are powerful cards, Puppet Parade is a really good card on its own right, and you can even access Rank Up Magics easier. It was a Trap card though, and the general consensus is "if you can't use it on your 1st turn, it's trash" so…

I used to be a huge Yugioh sperg back in the day but mostly lost interest around the Zexal era.

I'm hoping that the Charmer supporters turn their votes around to support their fellow Spellcasters. Though I am curious as to how Konami would boost Sacred Beasts as a whole. Maybe make a new version of Armityle?

EDIT: Or maybe they could tie them in with Yubel. Heck, Konami managed to somehow jam Ojama, VWXYZ, and Armed Dragons together, why not?

And the pendulum swings again, like 5 more hours to go or so until the poll is over.

Shaddolls won by a mere margin. Kudos to all who voted. Hope Konami gives out new cards to the other themes as consolation prizes.

The YU-GI-OH! OCG 20th ANNIVERSARY MONSTER ART BOX is coming this November. It's full of content and really heavy and expensive, so I want to say thanks and sorry for the people who bought or have to deliver it.
This is the cover illustration. The blank cards will be filled in later in the editing process, but I wanted to share this arrangement I made for the upcoming July 21st (House of Councilers) election.
Japan is SUPER FUCKED with its current traitorous government.

Neat, hopefully Japan becomes a RL duelist kingdom and my dream of becoming king of games can become reality

I thought Time thieves or whatever were the new TCG exclusive theme?
Exclusives the last few sets have been a mess from the abrupt backpedaling on Danger!, Time Thieves getting 6 cards then dropped, and randomly having Valkyrie/Noble Knight stuff. Also VRAIN Box Stuff

The same sort of backpedaling we've seen from Blackwing, Trickstar, and Gouki. Why can't they be like Performpals or Magicians and provide at the very least decent cards in their tenure? It's not as if making shitty cards are going to weaken the archetype, since no one's gonna use them anyhow.

At least the new Vrains cards are all pretty decent. Even the new Borrel spell ain't half bad, I'll at least use it.

Wait what's going on in Japan?

Wait what's going on in Japan?
Elections are coming up, and a lot of politifags are crawling out.
TBH I really don't care what party Kazuki supports. Hell I can't really wholeheartedly support the current government either. But using big brain words like "traitorous" or "dictatorship" are massive red flags of idiotic politifag, and I hate how he dragged his characters into all this. SJWs laugh at the idea of "my childhood is ruined!", but these characters have specific backbones and ignoring all that just to send a shitty message is just wrong.
