Finding anything online now has become worse than it was in 2004. Everyone paywalls, gate keeps, and hides what they make. It is like they all fear getting popular on the algorithm.

It's because they want to monotize everything they do. They act like copyright holders and are afraid something they make will pop-off and they wont get a chance to milk out all the money from it. Yet they will complain when the same thing happens to them. Then they will bitch about Adpocloypses honestly 3 where not enough.

In their heads they're breaking the story that will ruin someone, or make them thousands, and they need to protect it from the others that want to steal it for their own. Frogan hasn't been generating a lot of content lately so it was left in the middle of the video with the "everyone wants to buy creator clash" segment and a "making fun of breadtubers talking about creator clash from 3 years ago" segment.
 
I’ve been so burnt out on commentary lately. I don’t fault people for streaming instead of making anything interesting, it’s printing money with way less effort. Can’t really get mad at people taking the smarter route. Just wish people still made videos. I’m not even asking for anything as edgy as Bigbunjee, just a solid 15-30 minute video with jokes.

And I know the defense there is “no one watches those”/“I get better numbers on streams” I know. I get it.
It’s like youtube is turning into netflix, where they know you aren’t fully paying attention so they pad the thing that could have been 45 minutes into a 5 hour slog of useless and repeated information. I think most streamers have/will admit that their content is mostly background noise.

I’ll go back and watch episodes of Seinfeld or Arrested Development that I love, I’m not rewatching the 6 hour true crime doc I had on while knitting.

Is anyone going back to rewatch random Chud or Nick streams? I did that for After Hours, but that was because shit happened on After Hours. I think the most memorable things to happen in recent commentary memory were mama max and bowblax, and wow, look at that, it’s topics where people streamed together or made videos.

I know they say that community drama was the shit everyone hated about being in commentary, but it was the most memorable stuff. It’s the things people still reference and look back at.

There’s gotta be some way to make this work? Like making videos occasionally and streaming the research when you do? Idk.

We already have the monkey paw version of this. Uploading slightly edited streams where they dont edit out the donos or tangents.

I do feel you but old commentary was also terrible because it was 50 people copying each other's homework stretching out a topic to 15 minutes. See the kiwitubers if you want to remember what like that was like

That is true, but I feel like it was better then because everything was shorter. You knew before clicking on the video what they were covering and by the five minute mark you knew the details/sense of what the rest would be like. So if I didn’t like it I would click off. And if I got tired of the daily slop I would just watch non commentary channels and tune in to the actual good high effort 20 minute commentary videos (that got me into commentary in the first place) when they came out every 2-3 weeks. Tune in to After Hours live or watch the VOD when I wanted something funny to listen to while doing something else.

Now I can tune in to streams (that feel more or less the same a lot of the time) or watch a vod where I have to sit through like 30 minutes to tell what’s being covered, let alone if I actually am interested in it. That is the nature of this type of content when you morally grandstand on other people.

They will always end up fighting each other until there is no one left.

This happened in 2016 with Leafy witu how everyone turned on him; even though everyone did the same shit he did.

A community that based on low effort content will always struggle to survive and divide itself.
They have no talent outside of tearing down other people.

It's why people like GradeAUnderA channels are pretty much dead now.

The audience all will eventually grow up and realize these people are all shit then leave them.

You are witnessing in real time commentary dying again.

They have gotten lazy, repetitive, and boring, and the only reason to watch now is them slap fighting into ilrelevancy.

We have gotten a lot of lolcows from this community for a reason; these people are obsessed with fame, but refuse to devleop any real talent to obtain it.

In my opinion the death of video essays /takedowns is what has been hurting the community. Essay channels were incentivized to do the most reputational damage as possible, because it’s what brought in the subs and respect. This also had the affect of constantly creating new drama as the 50th Suzy Lu video just wasn’t worth it to make unlike the 1st Chris Hansen video. But as the goal of commentary became less about respect and more about money the meta changed to slop. Along with get more money for your time, essay videos were high risk high reward (ex: Pyro situation). A bad essay video would completely end your career, while a bad slop video has almost no affect on a creator. It’s a natural shift that happens once people stop doing it for the love of the game and instead for money. I’m too Jewish to morally care about people prioritizing money, but it’s still sucks to see what that mindset has done to the quality of content. Essay videos now are all zero personality sunny v2 clones that make surface level summary videos of old drama who can’t do as much as speaking in a non monotone voice or follow the cardinal rule of crossing their Ts and doting their Is. The worst part about the slop content for me is the repetitiveness. The raping boy has always been a part of commentary, but Jesus fucking Christ we are on month 6 of Ethan and Hasan since the content nuke has released. It probably been a year if you include the skirmishing before it. No one wants to start any drama because it requires to much effort or is to risky. The only channel that is consistently breaking new ground in my opinion is Harmful opinions. There are other creators, like Shamoo with his tectone vids or Nickandros with his Muta videos, that are making new drama, but so far it’s mostly been centered on one person.

After all of the "engineer" talk with muta, I was wondering if nick has something similar. Maybe this is a nothing burger but if anyone has knowledge on deoreo's "real job" it might be interesting to look into. Especially since nick is now going after muta. All these commentary guys lie to look like professionals/ tough guys on the internet. If nick was claiming similar high credentials as muta I wouldnt be surprised.

This is exactly what happened to Tom
I remember when he came back from the hiatus and started uploading a new retrospective every day I was hyped, a couple years later and I barely even watched them.
I stopped watching completely after that Ifunny video, you don’t realize how bad the videos really are until it’s something you know.
And of course the second channel just turned into stream clips. Can’t really keep making stuff like the Ajay videos if you’re doing the same thing as him.

I think it’s telling how popular Bigbunjee got in a short time. I don’t think it’s just the edginess/humor. Shorter videos uploaded occasionally only when there is something to say is something people were really interested in.

This approach worked/works fine for non commentary channels like Emp Lemon and Internet Historian, and they’re still able to get the best of both worlds by uploading lower effort (but still good) stuff on their second channels

I know the slop conversation gets pretty pretentious but it’s really going to take some pretentious people (or at the least shit stirrers) to kickstart good content again.

Tommy's entire career has just turned into him autistically defending his own version of reality any time anyone points out that he might be retarded. The amount of times I've tuned into a stream of his and seen him latch on to completely irrelevant details and pretend it changes everything about a situation is way higher than it should be for someone his age. Wouldn't even be so bad if he didn't continue to hold to his delusional takes, especially when receiving push back from his chat.
 
The "get that bag" zoomer mentality is a fucking cancer. It lets anyone get away with anything, as long as it's for their own enrichment. Literally anything morally dubious gets hand waved with "They're just getting that bag bro, can't blame them". I can't tell if its willful ignorance to justify their own shitty behavior, or zoomers are just so literally desensitized to exploitation that they have no concept of it being a bad thing. I know "muh slipreeslope" but I genuinely fear for later generations if this kind of thing keeps up. People willing to resort to increasingly antisocial behavior and facing no pushback out of some kind of mutual respect for success above everything else doesn't bode well for the society's future.
