Now compare that to Rare's output from the Xbox 360, original Xbox and Nintendo 64.

I don't think comparing Rare's output, or any studio's, today to 30 years ago is fair, the nature of production is too different. The only studio I can think of where it's even close is Insomniac, and Sony beats that dog bloody to even get a every other year cycle out of them.

Kameo had amazing graphics, decent gameplay and a wonderful atmosphere. A funny and clever game. Grabbed by the ghoulies is one of my favourite Rare releases ever, it’s a well crafted hybrid of adventure and beat em up elements, great humour, high replay value.

The only piece of shit they made was the Perfect Dark reboot.
I wish I would have got to play Kameo while I had my 360. Would love to see a re-release on Steam.

Might have to try it emulated on my Steamdeck.

Yeah, like most of the Rare's output Kameo plays with some tropes and mocks itself at every corner, all while managing to remain a classy fairytale for all ages. And the graphics weren't just beautiful, everything was put there to create a lovely atmosphere.

I wanted to make a point that Rare has IPs that they’re just sitting on.

Ah, Sea of Thieves, the only game with such shitty and non-functional netcode and "matchmaking" I refunded it twice.

It's a better game than Ubisoft's Skull & Bones so it has that going for it. I think its 24-hour player count on Steam is in the thousands compared to an all-time peak of 66,000.

That all time peak was 5 years ago during the worst of the plandemic lockdowns. Once people got the clot shot and things opened up, player count dropped like a rock and never recovered.

Just so you get an idea of how absurd is the ask of 30% profit margins from Xbox, by comparison Sony recovered its pre-pandemic profit margins this year, an impressive 16% after it had fallen as low as 4% in Q4 2022 due to the acquisition costs of Bungie. The highest it has ever achieved was 21% and that was in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic.

Nintendo is the one pulling 30% percent profit margin because of their very unique hardware and software strategy. Microsoft is just being completely insane thinking Xbox can pull off those numbers.

Playstation had massive hardware issues (same as Microsoft) during the pandemic window, which drastically affected how many people could even get into the PS5 eco system.

Sony also has a similar issue as Microsoft in terms of massive levels of studio mismanagement and a complete lack of production and is limping to the barn on things like Ghost of Yotei. They have Bend Studio, complete with ~130 people, making a Vita game in 2012 and then going all the way to 2025 with only Days Gone to show for it. Their install base is so bad that Square (FFXIV, FFXVI) and Sega (Persona, Yakuza) are making their releases multiplatform. They bought Bungie for 3.6 Billion Dollars and have 0 idea what the fuck to do with them.

Sony is fucking up nearly as as bad as Microsoft is, but have a little bit in the tank (Astrobot) that makes them less of a laughing stock.

I couldn't find a dedicated thread to South of Midnight and the only reason I'm reminded that game exists is because 1. The game awards featured it in the Games for Impact Category 2. It was a contender for worst game in the Lord Frogmire thread. I knew next to nothing about the game minus the bizarrely designed character and the kind of charming deep south gothic art style that I honestly think needs to be used for another game (probably a Tim Burton inspired one rather than... whatever the fuck this is). I watched a review and the guy reviewing showed off musical numbers in the game (which is just fucking weird to have in a game in the first place unless you're Hi-Fi Rush or Billy Bust Up but whatever) and holy fuck the cinematography in it is embarrassing to watch. The camera just awkwardly hangs around at seemingly random angles that does nothing to highlight the facial reactions or dynamics between either characters I.E:

I don't watch musicals, but normally in those, the camera angle shots are dynamically changed at a pretty quick pace and usually they're transitioned to the beat of the song and they're deliberately positioned so that you not only get a decent view of the kind of choreography the actors are performing, but also their facial expressions highlighting what type of mood they're feeling in the scene. This game does none of that and instead features stiff animations with no facial expressions whatsoever (you can even see that for yourself in the pictures) which gives me the impression watching mind controlled zombies dancing (and no that's not the context for the scene).

(like what the fuck is going on with her face here)

It was genuinely hard to watch and the song itself was okay, but god the fucking singer is way over-singing in the song. "If I growl a lot while singing, it'll sound good!" --This guy, whoever is singing this song

Considering they are pretty much giving up at this point (literally the only 2 games that we know is coming next year is Gears E-day and Clockwork Revolution), they could at least try to port all the good old stuff from their library that still not on PC (Gears 2/3, Fable 2, Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, etc.) but the exceptional businessmen in charge of this shell of company branch instead decided to waste money on fucking re-remasters of Halo 1 and 2 to make pathetic flexes on Unreal Engine. The fact they can't even appeal to the most basic demands is just tiresome.

There's rumors they're working on a 360 emulator for the anniversary next year. Would definitely be preferable to them jeetmaking Halo 1 and Gears 1 over and over and over and over again.
