Professor of the IPN who traveled to China, possible carrier of coronavirus in Mexico
A professor at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) is under observation and quarantined in Reynosa for possibly being the first coronavirus carrier in Mexico, he informed the Secretary of Health of Tamaulipas, Gloria Molina.
The 57-year-old teacher and head of the Genomic Biotechnology Laboratory , where the pathogenesis of viruses and bacteria is investigated, traveled to China on December 25, 2019 and returned to Mexico on January 10, so presenting some symptoms was channelled.
"He went to the place in China where the first outbreak occurred (Wuhan). He is a 57-year-old man and professor of the molecular biology area of the National Polytechnic Institute that has his residence in Reynosa , where the laboratory or a Genomic biotechnology center there in Reynosa.
"This doctor traveled to China on December 25 and was in the city of Wuhan where the outbreak occurs and returns to Mexico on January 10, is one day at the Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City and then travels to Reynosa. It is worth mentioning that the doctor understands the risk of this disease," said the secretary.
The State Ministry of Health reported that the professor traveled to China, leaving Reynosa to Mexico City, with a stopover in Tijuana , later arrived in Beijing , and on the same day to Wuhan City, Hubei.
The patient, of Asian origin, is asymptomatic , has only dry cough and rhinorrhea, and has not had a fever.
After notification of the emergency department of the ISSSTE in Reynosa, the General Directorate of Epidemiology was requested to request a diagnosis at the Epidemiological Diagnostic and Reference Institute for the identification of respiratory viruses.
According to the authorities, on January 13, 2020, the possible carrier began with a cough; on Thursday 16, the nasal flow appeared, without chest or throat pain.
The professor reported living alone and not relating to people with respiratory diseases.
Where does the professor work, possible carrier of the coronavirus? According to information from the IPN website , the professor is the head of the Genomic Biotechnology Laboratory , where the pathogenesis of viruses and bacteria, and new drug discoveries are investigated.
The Center for Genomic Biotechnology , founded in 2014, is located on Boulevard del Maestro , Colonia Narciso Mendoza, Reynosa, and has eleven research laboratories.
It stands out for the teaching of the Master of Science in Genomic Biotechnology and for the work of national and foreign researchers.
So far, the Polytechnic has not reported on the teacher's activities or the application of extraordinary measures in the event of a possible case.
