That chick isn’t even wearing goggles... I saw this compilation which has tons of stuff I hadn’t seen before. It’s rather disturbing seeing such panic in China considering how much of an emphasis their culture has on social harmony and saving face. Going to the store and hurriedly snatching up things seems like something you’d see in America on Black Friday than anything you’d see in an Asian country and especially China.

That's an interesting idea, and if true a real gamble for NK. NK is in a unique position to ride this out as they have very limited border traffic and a totalitarian regime capable of doing more or less as they please. Completely isolating themselves and enacting travel restrictions internally (for a few weeks to ensure no contamination has found its way in) would be the safest action in my opinion. If it is as bad as the non-official reports coming out of China make it out to be then I think the virus could be catastrophic to the people of NK: I doubt there are resources available at a quality or quantity required to handle it even as a small outbreak.

I wonder what China would have offered in exchange for this immense risk assuming this rumor to be true? I guess there is the possibility of China not informing NK of the risk, or NK being arrogant enough to believe they can manage it.

The rumors on this board speaking of it being a "bioweapon" are amusing. Sadly, the blueprint for producing viruses that can be produced as bioweapons have been around for a long time and several real monsters have been produced and either stored or destroyed afterwards.

It isn't that hard to do and genome sequencing is not required for their creation either, but it helps to produce niche ones.

I am unaware of any leader of any country that thinks wiping out 95% of humanity is a good idea. A Virus production program is virtually undetectable as the labs put out no particular signatures of their existence, require very little in the way of equipment and are relatively small.

North Korea is in for a very bad harvest this year, China probably subtly implied that North Korea’s “cooperation” would ensure that there would be no disruptions in food coming from China to offset the shortages in North Korea.

Ma said the incubation period for the coronavirus can range from one to 14 days, and that the virus is infectious during incubation, which was not the case with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), a coronavirus that originated in China and killed nearly 800 people globally in 2002 and 2003.

Containment efforts, which have thus far included transportation and travel curbs and the cancellation of big events, will be intensified, Ma told a crowded news briefing on the second day of the Lunar New Year holiday.

Someone mentioned coronavirus in dogs earlier. If you are a dog person and you remember the periodic news pieces about cities that suddenly had a bunch of dogs die from going to the dog park it was probably coronavirus. I worked for an animal shelter many moons ago, and while it was an older facility we were meticulous about cleaning and sanitizing. Most dogs that came in sick from various things could usually be treated but not fucking coronavirus. As soon as we had a confirmed case of that the shelter was closed to adoptions and intake, and all the dogs euthanized. Even if the animals weren't showing symptoms they were contagious and you couldn't risk sending it out into the population. Dogs that got sick didn't recover, treating could drag out their suffering a bit more. And any dog could get sick, not just old dogs, not just puppies. It broke my heart, I hated having to put dogs down, having to put down entire families, completely adoptable dogs, animals you were attached to, animals that looked totally healthy, because of a virus was beyond awful.

Coronavirus sucks, I really hope they do manage to contain it, I feel very badly for anyone who has it even if they did eat live bats.

If someone thinks this escaped from a Bioweapons Lab, then they have very low expectations of what a Lab would be producing. WuFlu qualifies as a lesser threat than the Flu; hardly the stuff of Dr. Strangelove. Coronaviruses are poor bioweapon candidates for a multitude of reasons.

You can't have it both ways. It can't be the result of a bat shit eating chinaman and/or the the result of a sophisticated lab. In fact, it is neither.

As for Nukes, they have localized damage, can perform precision strikes and are far less destructive than viruses. The era of considering Nukes the end-all of warfare days are gone.
There is no nuclear weapon or other weapon ever devised capable of the destruction like a well made virus.

The bioweapon fears are a little silly. Worry about an escaped bioweapon if smallpox suddenly pops back up or some strain of measles that smashes through vaccine immunity shows up somewhere.
