The government definitely don't want a repeat of the PR-disaster that arose from the previous SARS outbreak, so they will probably prefer to overreact this time and still appear to be in control rather than the alternative of looking incompetent and helpless.

WHO doesn't have real information. They're trying to work w China to get more info rather than being adversarial.

There are antiviral medications which work similarly to antibiotics.
 
Remember - antibiotics do NOTHING against viruses & taken in the face of this or other viruses simply clears the path for secondary bacterial infections.

Hate to sound old fashioned but Great Grandma's advice, (for now at least), seems the best. Eat properly or as properly as you can manage, make sure you're not short on sleep, get lots of fresh air & exercise, try to keep stress levels down, avoid crowds & wash hands a lot.

Grocery & other needful shopping - best done first thing in the morning right when stores open. Stores have been at least superficially cleaned overnight, few germs are lingering & there are fewer other shoppers.

As much as possible, avoid health care settings. Even if no one in the waiting room has Wuhan, it has tons of other viruses & if you weren't sick going in, your chances of being sick coming out are much higher. When Wuhan hits your town, those already ill with other things will be more susceptible.

By definition, antibiotics do not affect viruses. That is what makes viral infections like HIV especially difficult to treat, because there are simply no good, cheap options like antibiotics. It is standard practice to give symptomatic treatment for typical viral URTI infections because the alternative is using expensive drugs like Tamiflu for little proven effect. This is also why viral epidemics like this are dangerous, because there are no good options for treatment. Either you stabilise the patient and hope for the best, or you dig into expensive as shit drugs and maybe save this one. That's assuming the antivirals work to begin with, and there's no guarantee what we currently have in mass are useful for the Wu Flu.

Anyone giving antibiotics for a viral infection is an idiot and should have their medical license (if they had one lol) pulled.

"China's Chernobyl" is a good way of putting it, especially considering the increasing likelyhood that this virus escaped from a biomedical facility.

I'm still very skeptical of the harmfullness this virus. While the WHO can be manipulated into dragging it's feet, the CDC or the American Government doesn't appear to be overly concerned.

China's severe reaction to the outbreak, in my opinion, is more motivated by a desire to test new crowd control/national mobilization innovations rather than a direct fear for the Virus' harmfullness.

I want a virus to wipe out humanity as much as everyone else does but it's not gonna happen, not this time.
People are just overreacting with this "it's secretly killing everyone and China is hiding it!" nonsense.
Sure they COULD be but I bet 10,000 Yuan it's a nothingburger.

They don't appear to be overly concerned about actual plague, typhoid or TB either but all of those are harmful and out of control in California/other large cities in the US.
 
Man, this virus business seems pretty fucked, what with dudes puking up blood and shit.

My question tho is when are we gonna get plague monsters running around? I always wanted to test out how well I would do in a Resident Evil style situation.
