On Friday, a truck driver carrying 100 crab-eating macaques crashed into a dump truck outside of Danville, Pennsylvania.

The shipment of monkeys was en-route to a CDC-approved quarantine facility after arriving Friday morning at New York’s Kennedy Airport from Mauritius.

The CDC said the agency was providing “technical assistance” to state police in Pennsylvania.

After a collision on a state highway near an Interstate 80 exit in Pennsylvania’s Montour County, several monkeys escaped the crash site.

ABC 7 Chicago explained:

The last of the escaped monkeys from the crash of a truck towing a trailer load of 100 of the animals were accounted for by late Saturday, a day after the pickup collided with a dump truck on a Pennsylvania highway, authorities said.
Several monkeys had escaped following Friday’s collision, Pennsylvania State Police said. But only one had remained unaccounted for as of Saturday morning, prompting the Pennsylvania Game Commission and other agencies to launch a search for it amid frigid weather.
Kristen Nordlund, a spokesperson with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an email Saturday evening that all 100 of the cynomolgus macaque monkeys had since been accounted for. Three were dead after being euthanized.
The email did not elaborate on why the three were euthanized or how all came to be accounted for. But Nordlund said those euthanized were done so humanely according to American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines.

The New York Post added:
ynomolgus monkeys, as the species is also known, can cost more than $10,000, and were used as test subjects for the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a report.

But the latest developments have made this story even stranger.

According to reports, a Danville woman has allegedly developed symptoms after coming into close contact with one of the monkeys beside the interstate.

Michele Fallon of Danville says she’s concerned for her health after coming into close contact with one of the monkeys on the side of the interstate.
Fallon says she never could have imagined that trying to be a good Samaritan would lead to this.
She just received her first dose of rabies vaccine and a round of anti-viral medication, after a monkey hissed in her face at the scene the crash in Valley Township.
“I thought I was just doing the right thing by helping — I had no idea it would turn out this way,” said Fallon
Fallon says on Friday she saw a truck hauling a trailer collide with a dump truck where Route 54 meets Interstate 80. She pulled over to help the driver.
“He just asked if his trailer was okay. He never said, ‘if you do come near a crate do not touch it,’ if he would have told me that, I would have been more careful.”

That’s when Fallon came face-to-face with an agitated monkey.
The truck was hauling 100 cynomolgus macaque monkeys from Africa, headed to a lab in Missouri for testing. The three monkeys that escaped have since been recovered.

An "anti-vax" olympic champion passed away last December and there's more than meet the eyes.
British broadcaster Sky News breathlessly reported on the COVID death of “anti-vax” Olympic gold medallist Szilveszter Csollany, before admitting later in the article that he was vaccinated.

Well, this is awkward.

The 51-year-old Hungarian, who was the 2000 Sydney Olympics rings champion, had been hospitalised since December with the illness, a stay which included weeks on a ventilator.

Citing Hungarian media outlet Blikk, Sky News reported that Csollany had “expressed anti-vaccination views on social media.”

This led the news outlet to headline the article ‘Anti-vax’ Olympic gold medallist dies of COVID’, clearly suggesting that the athlete had decided not to get the vaccine and that this contributed to his death.

However, in the 3rd paragraph of the story, it is acknowledged that “the six-time World Championship medallist had been vaccinated to allow him to continue to work as a gymnastics coach.”

Sky News decided not to include this pretty crucial fact in either the headline or on their front page, which merely stated ‘anti-vax Olympic gold medalist dies of coronavirus’, again suggesting his failure to get vaccinated was a factor in his death.

This is by no means the first time that Sky News, which has vehemently lobbied for lockdown restrictions in its coverage since the start of the pandemic, has published wildly misleading claims.

As we previously highlighted, the broadcaster claimed that the notion of climate lockdowns was a fake news conspiracy theory invented by COVID-19 deniers even as India was simultaneously announcing a climate lockdown.

Back in November, Sky News reported that COVID hospitalizations were “14 times higher” than at the same time the previous year, despite this being demonstrably false.

The Ifo Institute calculated the excess mortality from the begin of the pandemic until end of 21, and they found an excess mortality of 96,200 over what would have been expected. That's 15% lower than the official number stated by the RKI.
A hard flu season usually kills around 20k-30k at most, so 100k in two years is still quite bad. Not exactly the Black Death, though, and again a sign that numbers were fudged. Consequences for anyone in charge? There'll be none.

The way how you calculate excess mortality makes a lot of difference. Usually, they just take average mortality for 5 previous years and use it as a baseline for calculating excess mortality. This is wrong, because:
1) Different all-cause death rates in different age cohorts. Same %-increase in death rates among elderly will have disproportionately high impact on all-ages excess mortality when compared to younger cohort, because the baseline of boomers dying is higher. Also, COVID has vastly different impact on different ages, further skewing the data.
2) Population age pyramid in Europe is getting more top heavy. The UN 2019 models predicted that death rate will only grow for the next 20 years. Boomers are gonna die regardless, thus increasing the numerator in excess mortality equation, while denominator (average mortality in pre-pandemic years, when death rates were going down) stays the same.

To fix this, mortality needs to be age-adjusted, and model population should be used as a denominator when calculating excess mortality. There's a very good work doing exactly that (archive)

TL;DR Most of excess mortality data are garbage and should be revised downwards.
