Why aren't people allowed to sit on the beach?
Because people can't be trusted to use fucking sense and maintain distance from one another. There's been about ten stories a week for the last two months about people being stupid, attending parties or events, not keeping their distance and spreading the coof. It doesn't have anything to do with the density of people in a space.

But walking on the beach is okay and people will maintain their distance? Right, just like they do in every store. Nobody suntanning on the beach decides to suntan within 2 meters of an unrelated person unless it's a crowded as hell beach.

>unless it's a crowded as hell beach.

Santa Monica beach has infamous crowds with lots of families, so it's very well a probability, especially as the days turn hotter.

It's the first warm weather following a near-nationwide lockdown. Every beach is going to be crowded. People weren't able to control themselves two weeks into this thing, let alone two months.

Rant time. I noticed the MLB is trying to start the season on July 4. I think this is good since at least we have some sports to give some "bread and circuses" but this is utterly insane when you think about it. They cancelled every single sporting event in the US because a few NBA players tested positive for COVID-19, but there was never a reason every sports league couldn't play behind closed doors. Sports weren't cancelled for the Spanish flu, and other flu seasons like Hong Kong flu never cancelled sports. And unsurprisingly COVID-19 has not killed a single active professional sports player (IIRC--if it has I'm sure the death toll there is less than a dozen active professional players or notable college sports players).

In World War II we could still have baseball and had a one-armed guy in the World Series since the best players were serving in the Armed Forces, but we can't now even though we can take the precaution of playing behind closed doors. Even in Imperial Japan they had baseball all throughout World War II until the 1945 season when the government made them cancel because all the players were needed in the Imperial Japanese military and also in industry, agriculture, etc. because the country was falling apart. IIRC it was similar in Nazi Germany with soccer. Yet a virus that's about 10x as lethal as the seasonal flu at best (and affects the same demographics the flu severely impacts/kills) somehow makes it so we can't have sports, even behind closed doors.

Players who've contracted COVID-19 could just sit out 2 weeks like everyone else. All teams in any league, basketball, hockey, soccer, whatever, would have plenty of people to call up. Even in college sports there'd be players available for the March Madness basketball teams. Would sports suck because a lot of players are in quarantine? Yeah, but at least there are sports, just like how the one-armed guy was an MLB champ in World War II.

People need sports, since that industry is a huge part of society. It keeps a lot of people peaceful and occupied when they can watch sports on TV and rant about it. Sports make a hell of a lot of money for the economy. Cancelling all sports was an utter mistake.

Yet it doesn't render the police somehow incapable of enforcing the stupid lockdown policies. If there's too many people on one beach, tell them to move to another beach. Didn't the cops drag some swimmer out of the water at an empty beach in Northern California? And of course the people filling in skateparks with sand.

Interesting development: now the geology field camp, a class which I need to apply to graduate school, is all online and is much cheaper as a result.

Plus, I'm going to be teaching English online for my local school district at the same time.

I'll be earning college credits at a fraction of the normal cost and earning money at the same time. Thanks China! I think that's the first time I said or wrote that and meant it.
Online field school.
Heresy.

I'd agree with you, but my bank account is about to get full and stay full.
Fair.
Most companies will give you a crash course on what's expected of you for any given field work project anyway.
Hammer, compass, camera, GPS and a field tape measure is all you'll need anyway since you'll need to haul samples back to camp for assaying.

I think the biggest issue with sports is social distancing. Football has multiple players lined up side by side on the offensive and defensive lines. Basketball also has a lot of contact, especially with post players jostling for position and rebounds. Baseball tends to have players spread out more, but they can still be in close proximity at home (batter, catcher, umpire) and any base with a runner being watched closely by an infielder. Players rightfully don't want to take unnecessary risks but I've heard different ideas proposed to try to keep their safety and well-being in mind.

As for fans, the local sports section some time back mentioned which sports (I forget which) have TV/cable/radio contracts lucrative enough that they could financially survive this season without spectators. Social distancing for spectators would be difficult because season ticket holders likely wouldn't like being told that not all of them would be allowed to attend any given event and any attempt to rotate which season ticket holders sit out which games in order to keep it as equal as possible will still raise issues. What happens if season ticket holder A gets to see the big rivalry game while season ticket holder B gets stuck watching the home team play the worst team in the league? Multiply this by however many season ticket holders there are and it quickly becomes more hassle than it's worth.
(E: spelling)

The first semester of my year abroad in Japan just got cancelled, so I’ve now got no idea what the hell I’ll be doing for the next eight months.

For starters, read through the entirety of the NeoGAF/ResetERA thread like I did.

Well, New Zealand's lockdowns under Horseface Arden were amazingly autistic.
This is the consequence :

Now this brainless horseface is bootlicking Australia, trying to con Australia into a "Trans Tasman Bubble". Basically "Please help us and stay in lockdown too, ruin yourself with us". Our PM will be dumb enough to fall for this, no doubt.

NZ has had only a small number of cases and yet, is still in a Level 3 lockdown. She went too hard, too early and she's fucked her country into the ground. This is why no one should ever lock down. She's truly the world's greatest idiot.
What should she have done instead?

Still going with that house arrest BS........Your government is trying to keep you alive you fuckig subhuman cretins!

The same government that told us this is just the flu that would go away like magic, and that it's not a pandemic? The same government that demanded we stopped buying facemasks because they won't protect us, then a few weeks later demanded that we all wear them or else face the consequences?

NY opened 5/10 regions yesterday for manufacturing/construc/retail curbside and in store pickup (no shopping), fishing, forestry, and agriculture. Phase 1 goes on in those places 2 weeks, then they can enter phase 2. The other regions, including NYC, Long Island, Buffalo, and the counties north of the city are stuck in lockdown. In Phase 1 you can go to play tennis and see drive in movies. Also today it was announced horse racing, car racing, and other sports like baseball will be allowed starting 6/1. With no spectators. Probably for the rest of the year.
