War decides which types of freedoms you will have or have not.
War is everywhere not just an actual military conflict.
War is POWER.
War is MONEY.
War is SURVIVAL.

This is all very true in a society of slaves who consent to be ruled by warmongering sexual predators. Can you imagine a world where violence was not an acceptable mode of conflict resolution? Where is the glory in mass murder? Where is the honor in stealing land from its indigenous tenants?

Would it really be that cruel though?

I think in another place and time a guy like Tom would be a not especially remarkable but still functional and valued member of a community; however if you offer people the option of helplessness and avoiding responsibility a lot of them will take it because it feels good at first, except like anything else they'll continue to get more and more reliant on it until they're totally miserable and totally dependent and breaking away is a heroic effort. Just like the FBI pumping crack into the ghettos, the only people who win in the long run are the dealers and the upper class.

That's exactly why Tom's so mad. He's well aware that he's at no more of a natural disadvantage than anyone else.
