People have found their mapping tools used for the game and have booted into parts of it. A full crack is likely already around the corner, and this also means that modders get free reign, and maybe the absolutely terrible optimization of the game can be fixed. Again, the community around the game has to do what the devs couldn't.
And more about that source code leak. It appears it's likely the whole dev files. View attachment 1709612

It was super overblown, and seemed to stem from the PC Master Race crowd that has a conniption fit if they drop a single frame under 120fps. Watch Dogs looked fine. Ironically, I think the PC version had some high-end graphics or something you could mod back in, in an unused directory that installs with your game.
Watch Dogs had a Wii U version that was like a year late. I wanted to get that version but I thought it was cancelled, they stopped talking about it after a while and then quietly released it one day. It got no DLC, either.
I mean to be fair wasn't pc ports awful during the early 2010s due to how they where console ports with a coat of paint and not to mention how games would often get downgraded because of consoles
Didnt hear about the GTA version of this mess, if modders managed to get away with their work then power to them. I am not against full scale modding, Stalker has a mod called Anomaly which brings all games together using the reworked source code of the game (but that one was released legitimately). On the other hand you got companies like Nintendo who will nuke fan projects made from scratch. Even if modders manage to their work how will they host it publicly without fear of lolsuits? How does this work for the GTA guys?

Sorry, didn't actually mean that there was a GTA source leak (as far as I know). They simply tried to corral modders and blocked certain modding they happened to not like. It didn't end well for them.
And anyways the source code might not even actually be in the leak files and is in fact just all the uncompressed assets and developer tools?
Not sure what this entirely means as some code has been found. I guess it just means the bulk of it isn't there.
Egregor's hacked multiple other companies and successfully blackmailed a few so how they do things is somewhat known.
Researchers have been analyzing a new ransomware family that calls itself "Egregor." Attackers behind the malware, which has affected at least 13 companies, typically operate by breaking into organizations, stealing sensitive data, and running the malware to encrypt their files.
Appgate researchers tracking the threat say it contains anti-analysis techniques such as code obfuscation and packed payloads. In one of its execution stages, they found, the payload can only be decrypted if the proper key is entered in the process's command line. This means the file can't be analyzed unless someone enters the same command line used to run the payload.
Egregor's ransom note promises that if the ransom is not paid within three days, the attackers will leak part of the stolen data and alert the victim company's partners and clients via mass media so they know of the breach.
If ransom is paid, Egregor's operators claim they will decrypt the files and provide recommendations for securing the company's network to avoid future attacks, "acting as some sort of black hat pentest team," the researchers write.

People have been digging through these files for around two days now and even the piracy teams have been looking into them. If nobody's found a bulk of the code it's likely not even there. Egregor does their hacks in chunks. They'll bargain over one set of data and then move onto another just to maximize their potential profits.

Yeah they probably released "non-essential" stuff first to show they weren't bluffing. UbiSoft is probably using one engine for all their open world games, releasing that would be painful for the company.

It would be fascinating to have access to the full source of a modern AAA game. At the very least as a way for aspiring coders and modelers to see what a professional product looks like.

It's also useful as a way to understand how professional coders communicate issues with members of their team.
When TF2's source code leaked, it showed both how botched it was and how angry it made the devs.
Its about how I expected. The game is tedious, and at times very boring to play when you hear the NPC dialogue talking about politics in a post-Brexit age. Only thing more interesting are the drone attacks with cyber technology. It is hilarious, though, that more NPC‘s act shocked and continue to go on their day even though your character tazed and/or killed a cop, or another NPC like civilian.
The whole brilliant idea of having actual political podcasters do ""fictional"" elements in your game about shooting random people and crashing cars with your hacker phone is ridiculous and I'm glad they're now eating their own. I just hope the crack for this game comes out in the next week to add salt to the wound of the leaks. It took Watch Dogs 2 50 days to get one, though. The assets will possibly speed things up a bit, but without the source code a similar amount of time will probably need to be taken.
