Was Earthbound ever real?

I played all 3 games on my phone.

I prefer the setting and atmosphere of the first one.

The second has the better gameplay, characters and variety.

The third one would be a good game if the protagonist didn't got raped by a troon at the beginning of the game, also I don't like it as much as the others, it insists upon itself.

it seems that nowadays everyone loves this game and played it as a kid. Did I miss something? Did anyone here ever play it or remember it?
Earthbound (and by extension, the Mother series) only got popular when emulation became common, which really isn't that strange, since it all takes is one person on the internet to say "yo, this game is good" to start a domino effect around it.

Examples I can think of are: Chibi-Robo, Psychonauts (game of the year but poor sales), The World Ends With You, and I could go on.

Funnily enough, a lot of these "cult following" games have a big LGBT community supporting them...

Really makes you think, huh?

We only got 1 of the 3 in the states and most of its discovery probably came after the original smash bros. which included Ness as a character.

Amazing how much that gets overlooked.

It's not at the beginning of the game, it's some ways in. Lucas is a young child for the first three chapters, then from chapter 4 onwards, he's around 13. When you meet the Magypsies, there's a whole scene where the screen goes black, and a bunch of double entendre text implies Lucas is getting anally violated. Then it's revealed that's not what actually happened, and he gets some PK spell. Gee, I wonder why Mother 3 never got localized.

Back then troons weren't a protected class yet, nor did take over the entire entertainment sector as well. That scene was always controversial and made for the lulz, which is the best part.

Pretty sure it explains a lot on what's wrong with toby fuck and why so many troons are nintendo fans.

I mean its at the beginning of chapter 4, which is the main event of the game since the previous ones felt more like a prologue, so I do categorize it as the game's proper beginning.

I really wish that scene wasn't made, because "for the lulz" never really cut it as an excusefor me.

Yeah, it's uncomfortable in a way that just isn't funny. Rape, implied or not, is only funny when Mel Brooks writes a big dumb thug talking about how much he loves it.

*shrug* That's what Itoi himself said. He's a jap, and quirkier than usual. For what's worth, the 'Gypsies are NOT portrayed in a positive light, with them sending a kid to a certain death (Claus against the Mecha-Drago) because they felt amusement at the idea, and then there's the rogue towelhead who mistreats animals plus brainwashes a town into becoming consumerist zombies. They're more like fairies dressed as Japanese crossdressers than anything else,
