I grew up in the 90s and owned an SNES. However, I have no memory of Earthbound ever existing. I remember no advertisements, products in stores, or anyone ever talking about it. It was probably not until I played Smash Bros on the N64, but even then I hardly remember Ness in that game. I don't remember anyone talking about the game until the 2000s, when it seemed to be a niche but well-liked game online in certain circles. However, it seems that nowadays everyone loves this game and played it as a kid. Did I miss something? Did anyone here ever play it or remember it?

It didn't sell very well, that's why you've never heard of it when it was new.
That's why there was no sequel during the PS1 era.
Everyone played it on an emulator later.

It’s a real piece of shit, imagine playing the quirky gay cartoon game that got delayed for years when Enix and Square were deploying masterpieces one after another the entire 1994/95 period

Yeah.

Earthbound is basically polished shovelware. It's fine but not that good.

Now we wait for the Mother fags. @Enig you want a cig?

What little advertising there was leaned way too hard on the "this game stinks" tagline and attempts at gross-out humor. What kind of game is it? What's it about? Not mentioned, but it's very important to know that it's a putrid and disgusting game.
But even if you managed to puzzle together that it was an urban-themed comedy RPG and decided you want to play it, they only ever sold it as a stupid big box with the full strategy guide included. Why would I buy that when Chrono Trigger's on the shelf next to it for only 2/3rds the price?

It sold well in Japan. It was only a failure in America. By the time Earthbound came out, the SNES was already on its way out. And RPGs in general were not popular in America. People will ask ‘what about Final Fantasy VI (III)?’ and honestly that game was actually a failure in America. Most people played it later (or the PSX port) after the success of FFVII. Games like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, etc. were not money makers in America. Enix didn’t even bother to port most of their RPGs to the SNES. There was success in RPGs for the NES (FF1, DW, some shitty ports like Heroes of the Lance), but by the early 90s, gamers were interested in fighting games and 3D. The big games at the time were Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and (Super) Street Fighter II (Turbo). All these games are heavy tech demos with immersive gameplay compared to the slow, traditional looking JRPG.

The Super Famicom in Japan had a lot more life and was putting out games all the way through the year 2000.

i just wish it/they would have rereleased no later than undertale, something like a basic 1920x1080 set that didn't crash for pc, so 1. autists could have had their fill and helped avoid 500 ""successors"" 2. just how much they were shittily ripped- i mean homaged could be seen by normies, and if someone had an urge to play earthbound or mother, they could just easily play it instead of having to play "edgy moral rpg 6". the mother games were the most like actual games, or like the undertale vibe but with the game working more like a old final fantasy instead of "will you sacrifice your arm for Bill? will you sacrifice your other arm and make your main character fucking garbage the rest of the game/entire postgame or kill the child?" or "will you stay at a boring ass level 1 with no sense of progression or cool gear or fun the entire game?"

the normal to fucked vibe, cool music, wacky combat, all of that is straight ripped off and on a sliding scale of inferior by many, many titles. normies aren't going to get a console based on 75% baby games just to play it so instead most people just play alternatives, and mother just gets a mythical status instead of being a very good rpg.

main problem with mother series is if you are willing to go through the necessary effort to play it, you're able to play nearly the entire united console library of rpgs, which includes many, many, many, many other obscure rpgs that expanded on ideas and gameplay further, made back when shit was still good. xenosaga for one is much more like a fever dream

i'd say at the time it easily competes with ff6 and chrono trigger, which are also both good but rose tinted to the point of reverence, but the ps2 library-on less so

i'll always look back at the Mother series fondly, but it's all just that: memories.
it really hasn't aged gracefully, and being co-opted by trannies and the general mentally ill has really pushed me away from it in recent years.

it's okay at best, but i would probably still tell people it's worth a college try if they like rpgs. moreso if they like the generic heartstring tugging that the first and third games tried to do.

I remember seeing the ads for it. They had the game in FuncoLand in a huge box. It looked like some sort of weird parody game. It never crossed my mind to buy it. Sure I can play it now any time I want. But I just haven't bothered.

I definitely remember the scratch and sniff ad in Nintendo Power existed

ive read this like 5 times and i still have no idea what youre trying to say

It was fun. Played it as a child. Sometimes I'll come back to play it. Still fun. If its comedic styling gels with you, you'll probably have a good time and if not, then probably not.

played mother 1 and 3 on emulator. Tried earthbound when it was on switch library, despite it praise it's very so-so, liked earthbound zero story better and mother 3 is the superior game

Earthbound shoulda been on PC years ago, which would've proven that Undertale is trash or something when you can actually play what inspired it. People who can play Earthbound via emulation ignore it cuz they can play better RPGs. Like Xenosaga.
