So a few weeks ago me and some friends were in a discord discussing Reuben Langdon. It turns out he's pretty prolific not just in VA work but stuntwork as well. He has some pretty impressive credentials. In addition to his voiceover work He has credits on Power Rangers, Dexter, Pirates of the Carribean, Spiderman 2, Ant Man, and Avatar. Apparently he's even worked alongside Jackie Chan

fucking Dante and Ken. Langdon might be the definition of low-key success

Reading the Weeb Wars thread and doing other external research, being a voice actor seems like one of the worst possible jobs, particularly in America. Why the fuck do people even want to do this shit still?

If you work on a mainstream Western show it's actually pretty good money. The biggest names aren't paid as much as the biggest live-action guys but you can make a living off of it.

Well I mean most voice actors seem to enjoy their jobs and get paid reasonably well, it's just Funimation is run really horribly in comparison to most.

People that come out of fucking nowhere like Erika Lindbeck just baffle me. Shes from Boston, somehow was able to attend LA school, and now is a professional voice actor. L.A. is hella expensive. I don't understand how she has the cash...

Xander Mobus is from Texas. Apparently he was in a production of Shakespeare in Washington back in 2011. Now he is in L.A. too.

All these voice actors somehow have money to live there

That's just fucking weird to watch. I close my eyes and I hear Reuental from LOGH and a couple of VAs who sound incredibly familiar that I can't place. He kinda fits though. Leia and C3PO are perfectly cast though. Han sounds a bit off to me.

I think Norio Wakamoto would fit Darth Vader too although then I'd think it's just Raoh behind that mask.

Most of the Western animation voice guys know each other and they're all buddies. It's true for the L.A. dub scene as well.
It helps that there's some overlap at times. Most modern VAs tend to be fi-core, allowing them to work on big cartoons, anime and video games all at the same time. I mean, it's probably the only reason why LA voice actors pop up on RWBY every now and again depsite it being mostly recorded in Texas.

That said, it makes me wonder how LA VAs thinks of Texas VAs and vice versa.

Well, most of those voice actors have had to relocate to L.A. to make a living in the last decade, haven't they?

In Japan, voice actors can be big celebrities if they're popular enough.

On another note, I missed Miyu Irino's birthday again. Anyway, here's him singing part of the original Kingdom Hearts theme (it's from a medley, so there's no full version):

Yeah, but I meant the ones native to LA or worked mostly on shows/movies/games recorded there.

Unlike in other countries there is no overlap between dubbing and regular voice work in America. They don't interact with each other much.

There kind of is, if you watch some recent Disney/WB outings or a Transformers series pre-Cyberverse you can find some modern anime VAs in them thanks to the power of the fi-core clause. Most Cartoon VAs don't really do anime from my experience only because of Union crap and poor pay while the Anime VAs will do the odd cartoon for exactly that reason, especially in LA. New York also dabbled quite a bit in Cartoon work (from 4Kids' TMNT, to Venture Bros., to even Welcome to The Wayne or the aforementioned Cyberverse). Texas is about the only one I can see this happen with, and even then Funi's hired LA talent on several occasions, even bringing cartoon VAs for Afro Samurai and their dub of the Bayonetta anime (though that was more because said VAs originated the roles in the latter and fans would bitch if they replaced them).

I mean if it works for Canada (where everything's a Union project), then America can break tradition once and a while. On a personal level, I can certainly see where you're coming from though. It's rare I see anime VAs mention their Cartoon VA counterparts in casual twitter discussion (or even much discussion in general). No real point for Cartoon VAs like Tara Strong crying and moaning over Vic when they don't really talk to him or other anime dubbers often or at all. Though it would have been funny to see just for the salt.

Dubs used to be mostly non-union, so the voice actors there generally didn't do big-shot union work on popular cartoons. In Canada, I assume, there's no real difference between dubbing actors and cartoon voice work, and the rates are cheaper, thus why everyone outsourced to Toronto or Vancouver back in the day.

Today the whole difference has probably gotten too entrenched for it to change, unfortunately.

Well in Canada, there's never been a real distinction between what's union and non-union because , like I said almost everything that comes from Canada is unionized. Only dubs from Calgary are non-union, and even that line's being blurred as they're working more and more with the voice pool from Vancouver. There are non-union voice talent in Vancouver, but they get noticibly fewer roles in comparison.
