One of the upscalers for the Infinity Series uses pedophilic terminology. Why is this necessary?

Anyway I'm finally going to get to play Ever17, and not the apparently half-assed Steam release.

Now on to Heaven's Feel! I distinctly remember some of the more weird parts of that route from reading it on the LP Archive a decade ago but that's about all I remember so this'll be interesting.
Finally finished Heaven's Feel! I feel about the same as I did with UBW, but it was nice to wrap it all up. Fate's still my favorite route overall but Heaven's Feel did an interesting job explaining all the weirdness with the grail. I read online that Heaven's Feel is more like a "True Ending" to the entire game but I didn't get that feeling at all. It was still relatively conclusive in explaining and resolving stuff with the grail, but it still felt incomplete considering how some characters who didn't make it were treated. I dunno. Just personal preference I guess.

I expected to like Fate/Stay Night more, but it was still really good. Also, more games should have stuff like the Tiger Dojo.

Even though the writing for it was absolutely terrible and seems to exhibit the worst habits of the author/localizers with dumb vague circular prose, that little Realta Nua episode seems like it was a small way of recognizing that the Fate Route deserved a happier ending, which was really nice. Saber's still best girl.

Sentimental Graffiti will be getting a remake for PS5 and the Nintendo Switch.

The VNDB listings for the remakes did say that scenarios would be edited for "current sensibilities". So what would be the problematic content in the original that would need to be cut?

Rewrite or went back to Summer Pockets or Umineko
Rewrite is a very entertaining VN. It has all kinds of feels in it and it had me smiling all the way through. It strays a bit from your typical Key VN, but I'd say that's a good thing in this case. Route quality varies a lot as some of them had different writers. The important routes were written mostly by Romeo Tanaka, and I enjoy his style a lot. The worst route was written by r07. I don't like his style at all.

Summer Pockets is more of normal Key and very enjoyable. Both have superb music.

As for Umineko... I didn't like it at all. It was dragged out (it's 25 hours of content stretched to 140-160 hours), full of nontent and about 20 characters that didn't even need to exist at all. It's pretentious, verbose and the ending is absolute trash. I enjoyed it up to chapter 4, but after that it all just started falling apart. I can't really explain why I dislike it so much without spoiling the entire thing, and even if I did I'd just spend hours typing it out and Umineko has already wasted too much of my time.

I guess a short explanation of why I dislike it could be summed up as "There is no way that is the answer. It can't be that stupid, can it? Oh man, it was." It's the only VN I actually regret reading. Dead Angle is a great track though.

As for recommendations, "The House In Fata Morgana" is on sale now, and it's my favorite piece of fiction of all time. I can't recommend it enough.

Finished mask of Deciet. it's a 10 hour story stretched to 50 as far as I'm concerned. The end made me hate Nekone even more.

Started Mask of Truth and am a few hours in and it's miles better (I am VERY intrigued by the Maroro of wrath in the opening cutscene). Nekone hate has gone down a good bunch as well.

I can only presume that it will stick the landing due to all of the praise it gets, but the second game is ass and could have been stapled as the first quarter of Mask of Truth by triming the chaff ("let us get drunk, let us eat snacks, haku you so dumb *unfunny slapstick*" for 30 hours) and barely lost any of the weight. Hell, not seeing Nekone be a little shit for so long would have probable made me not start Mask of Truth with such a low opinion of her.

Finished Ever17. It was good, but the true ending was kind of dumb.

The way Takeshi died after he should have drowned was pretty fucked up, though. I'm sort of glad that part occurred at all because I was like "He swam that far down and still survived? That's horse shit."

I liked the big twist with Tsugumi and her children having a cry together.

The Lucia route was great. I like a good "everything goes catastrophically wrong" route, and even then it still was not so much of a downer. Worst route was Chihaya as the game suddenly became a Fate clone.
The sudden turn of mood was good yeah, but I still think the other routes where everything goes catastrophically wrong do it better.

They all do a good job in not feeling repetitive, with the main character switching sides in the conflict.

A lot of VNs fail in having a true ending that requires seeing all the heroines endings, but not using those to build up the characters or the setting. In Summer Pockets for example all of the non main heroines end up being invalidated by a true end "twist" that exists for the sake of having a true end.

Finished The Weeping Swan. A direct sequel to The Hungry Lamb and very infamous for controversy after it was released, leading to average score on Steam.

The story is about a famous massacre in a major Chinese city at the ending of the Ming Dynasty. We follow as a scholar that had a psychotic break after his childhood love died and has sunk into depression and alcoholism, forgetting most of his past. The story is split evenly between events immediately after the fall of the city and the massacre's start, and few years prior that lead to the lover's death.

The events in the present are done quite well, with the atrocities committed being shocking but still believable and having a logical ramping up rather than being evil for evil's sake. The past events are very interesting culturally and historically (for people without knowledge of Chinese history at least). But there is a bit too strong of a contrast between the two, leading to a very jarring change in tone between the depressing and immediate danger in the present and the laidback and optimism of the past. Maybe it was the point, but it just doesn't shift well. In the previous game there was also two plots, but those had similar tone overall.

The game is a lot more depressing than the previous game, with a lot of relatively okay bad endings (usually describing your immediate gruesome death for choosing wrong, but never having a bad ending route) with many normal endings that are more historical epilogues than character endings (which are the true endings). So pure writing wise I will recommend the game. I think some of the backlash is people expecting a conclusion that is more than bittersweet despite the fact that the game outright tells the player it will be dark.

Visuals and music are pretty good and do a job of setting a tone and having a large amount of character art. The translation is not bad but I had couple of times I stumbled into non translated text or placeholder text, but it never caused me to have an issue in understanding what's happening. Only the final ending for some reason was blank and it wasn't patched.

The controversy is usual Chink insanity. One of the main characters (but not the main character's childhood love) is a prostitute and Chinese are angry about that fact as if it constitutes NTR despite the main character never looking at her at a romantic light or the player seeing her sell her body. I saw arguments the writing is very edgy with her, but it's pretty bullshit argument and I think it's just leftists trying to justify hating it without calling NTR.

The other argument about the novel is that it doesn't portray events in a good way, but it's also ridiculous standards of wanting one side to be completely noble and pure rather than the game's reality that no side was completely innocent. Or that the main character meeting a lot of important historical figures, but that's just the usual trope of historic fiction.

Overall I recommend, but you really need to play the previous game to get the full enjoyment as there are many characters that come back.

428 Shibuya Scramble. Finished the first two hours so I've unlocked all the characters. So far I don't see the hype about the game,

I've been intending to play the rest of the Sci;Adv series beyond Steins;Gate, but every time I do I remember what I got spoiled on Anonymous;Code doing and just get so annoyed that I go back to pretending S;G is the only Sci;Adv game. I know people saying Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child are pretty good, should probably start biting the bullet instead of staying annoyed at what the last game does. Gonna be doing a replay of the original S;G so it might be a good moment to do the rest of the series too, especially if it becomes relevant in Steins;???

Anyone got any good novellas made by them to recommend?
Did Nasu do anything besides Fate and Tsukihime? Looking at wikipedia it's pretty sparse. The quality of the various spinoffs varies a lot, and the gameplay is usually mediocre to bad.

Count yourself lucky, Anonymous;Code was shit, I did a whole rant about it here. S;G might as well be the only good Sci;Adv game with Chaos;Head only being good for being a good schitzo story.

I see, well I think I will probably try to do the whole series just for completions' sake, and Steins;Gate is my favorite bit of Japanese fiction ever written, so my future rant might be of more fury than yours.

Chaos;Child isn't good? I heard a lot of people raving about that one. Besides that the only other one I was interested in was Robotics;Notes Dash because it got Daru.

Oh boy, a VN thread.

I've played more VNs than I can count over the years. Currently I'm working my way through 428 Shibuya Scramble. It's really appealing to me because it's all shot live action, it gives the medium a nice twist. The writing is pretty funny too and it has good pacing. I've also picked up the YU-NO remake, but it's not nearly as good as the original. Discussion about the artwork and soundtrack aside, the controls are clunky (using a gamepad you have to drag a huge ass cursor around the screen and using a keyboard will disable the mouse) and just in the prologue I've spotted multiple lines that weren't translated properly and made no sense.

Once I'm done with those I'm planning to go through The House In Fata Morgana, Steins;Gate and Doukyuusei.
