I follow the words of John carmack when it comes to video game stories. With that said, I do like lore when it's done well, something supplementary which doesn't hinder gameplay and which I can listen to as youtube videos in the background. On the rare occasion I like game narrative like with og castlevania, rtcw, mgs3 they're always genre stories which imitate movies I like or very very simple yet effective.
