Wait, Cuba's leadership might get churroed? Is Biden flashing back to the Cuban Missile Crisis or something?

The whole deal started in a region called Matanzas having a serious humanitarian crisis because of covid. They ran out of hospitals and resources and people started posting pics of patients on the floor having no beds, and many dying without any way to help them because the island has no medical supplies. That's how the whole deal started: the original #SOSCUBA tag was to ask people donations from all over the world. and even the government agreed with asking donations.

Couple of days after that, the twitter protests continued, but now with "the reason this happens is because of our government!". That's when people took the streets.

So, sure, a lot of commies will say it's "MUH CIA", but it was in fact due to covid that Cubans were finally done with the whole mess that it's their society. They're now marching to La Habana and flipping cars.

I hope the Cubans overthrow their Communist Overlords.

If for no other reason than "Virus created by and released by accident in Communist China ends up being the cause for The Cuban Communists to get overthrown" Would be a hilarious thing that people could make fun of Xi with.

Ah of course. Its more important that Bruce Jenner was deadnamed correctly named at CPAC than yet another communist country is having a melt down due to the fact communism is making all the decisions.

I hope the Cubans overthrow their Communist Overlords.

That wasn't real communism.

I guess former black panther Assata Shakur, who flew to Cuba, will GTFO before Cubans go after her.

There is a lot of right wingers and "conservatives" doing their best effort to not mention covid had anything to do with it. Sure, Cubans have been suffering their government for decades before covid, but that was the sparkle that ignited the fire here, specially after they announced their own vaccine.

On one hand, it'd be great to see some Cubans decide to take a $2 million dollar payday.
On the other, I don't want my tax dollars to house and feed a violent negress.
Maybe they'll do us all a favor and just give her the coof.

I guess their own vaccine did more harm than good because it was a shitty product like the other vaccines.

Maduro is now worried about his gold. https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2021...venezuelas-31-tonnes-seized-gold-bank-england

Submitted by Ronan Manly, BullionStar.com

In what’s becoming one of the longest running legal dramas in the global gold market, the saga of Venezuela’s ‘frozen’ gold in London continues to roll on, most recently reaching the UK Supreme Court in a 4 day court hearing between 19 – 22 July.

At the core of the legal drama is the question of who has the authority to withdraw Venezuela’s gold reserves which are stored in custody at the Bank of England. Is it the Banco Central de Venezuela (BCV) under the direction of de facto president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, or is it a team directed by self-styled interim president of Venezuela Juan Guaidó, who is backed by the US and UK governments. Given the multiple developments in this saga over the last few years and the complexity of the matter, a recap is in order.

50 tonnes at the Bank of England

From 1980 until 2011, the BCV had 99.2 tonnes of gold stored at the Bank of England. For details, see the BullionStar article from May 2015 titled “Venezuela’s Gold Reserves – Part 1: El Oro, El BCV, y Los Bancos de Lingotes”.

Between late 2011 and early 2012, the BCV conducted a famous gold repatriation operation, flying 160 tonnes of gold bars that were held abroad, back to Caracas in Venezuela to be stored in the vaults of Venezuela’s central bank. Following the completion of that gold repatriation in January 2012, this still left 4,089 of BCV’s Good Delivery gold bars stored in the Bank of England’s vaults (about 50.8 tonnes).

For details of the above, see the BullionStar article from May 2015, titled “Venezuela’s Gold Reserves – Part 2: From Repatriation to Reactivation”.

Sometime after 2012 and until 2018, the BCV then began entering various gold swap transactions, including those with Deutsche Bank and Citibank as counterparts, and also with the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) as a counterpart. To do this, the BCV used most of the gold that it held in the Bank of England vaults in London as collateral for the gold swaps.

Deutsche Bank and Citibank Gold Swaps

One such transaction was a $1.7 billion gold swap with Deutsche Bank, which the BCV let lapse in 2017, thus allowing Deutsche Bank to keep the gold that had been put up as collateral. This was somewhere between 30-40 tonnes of gold.

Another was a gold swap transaction with Citibank, again with the BCV putting up gold as collateral. In April 2018, the BCV paid Citibank $172 million to recover some of that gold from Citi which had been put up as collateral. That then left the BCV, as of April 2018, with a net total of 14 tonnes of gold held at the Bank of England (about 1125 Good Delivery gold bars).

After the Citi gold swap was wound up in April 2018, the BCV then began asking for its gold back from the Bank of England. This is where it gets very interesting.

In November 2018, it became public knowledge that the Bank of England was stalling on the BCV’s request to withdraw 14 tonnes of Venezuela’s gold from London, with the Bank of England using bogus excuses such as transportation insurance costs and anti-money laundering concerns to not fulfill its withdrawal obligation on BCV’s gold custody contract.

For details, see BullionStar article from 14 November 2018 titled “Bank of England refuses to return 14 tonnes of gold to Venezuela”.

However, the real reason for stalling the BCV’s gold withdrawal request was political – in the form of US State Department and US Treasury pressure that was put on the British Foreign office and HM Treasury to block Venezeula’s gold withdrawal and repatriation plan. This stalling was designed to allow time to roll out US sanctions against Venezuela in November 2018 and critically, to move the goalposts and change the rules of the game by allowing time for the Guaidó team (backed by the US and UK) to enter the arena so as to try to win control of the remaining 14 tonnes of BCV gold at the Bank of England.

Blocking tactics included the following. On 30 November 2018, two high profile politicians from the Venezuelan political opposition, Julio Borges and Carlos Vecchio, wrote a letter to the then Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, asking the Bank of England to refuse the gold withdrawal request by the BCV.

At the same time, UK Government officials fronted by the “Venezuela All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG)” attempted to block a meeting between the Bank of England and a Venezuelan team comprising BCV president Calixto Ortega Sánchez and Venezuelan finance minister Simón Zerpa Delgado, who had flown over from Caracas to London in early December.

Although that meeting went ahead, the Bank of England again refused the gold withdrawal request of Ortega Sánchez and Delgado. For more details, see BullionStar article dated 18 December 2018 and titled “Venezuela’s gold in limbo amid tug-of-war at the Bank of England”.

At this point they might as well let it go. Opposition has cucked out & cucked under, and Maduro will fuck over future generations by burning it for gibs (or likely in this case, being forced to send it Cuba for appeasement payments) but that's going to happen no matter what. The Maduro cannot be Churroed.

The Venezuelan director of combat sports was interviewed on state TV today and , when he started talking about the shitty conditions the athletes are forced to train in and the non-existent support they get from the government, the hosts panicked and ordered the interview to be cut, chastising him for daring to criticise the government and complaining that he'd' "get them in trouble". It's genuinely surreal seeing censorship this blatant in real-time, I suppose this coach has already been "disappeared".

Not sure why they even bother with the censorship anymore when the whole country has already been flushed down the shitter for the last few years.

Totalitarian Commie shitholes like Venezuela, Belarus and North Korea rely heavily on maintaining a media-driven facade of prosperity even if it blatantly contradicts reality, anyone who contradicts this facade is a threat to the system and must be silenced.

If he's in Japan for the games, he might be trying to build a case for an asylum claim.

A glimmer of hope in Venezuela

By Frank Friday

The news in our country and abroad has been relentlessly bad ever since we entered the calamitous Biden Era just months ago, but there are a few hopeful signs out there still.
One of the best is a story receiving almost no coverage in the larger press: the Venezuela elections this November. The democratic opposition has agreed to participate after years of boycotting the Maduro regime’s rigged voting. The EU will send a large team of election monitors and Maduro has already been releasing some political prisoners in a bid to end sanctions. Some are even predicting Maduro would be willing to retire from office at the end of his current term in 2024.
Why the possible change of heart by the dictator? For one, the economy is still a wreck. The Bolivar is worthless and most people have simply moved to dollars, denying the government its ability to buy support. Petroleum exports, which once made this a rich country, have crashed. It will take billions of dollars of Western investment and know-how in the oil sector to revive it, and that won’t happen with the present government. In short, it’s no fun being dictator of this place anymore.
Also, unlike a Putin or Xi, Maduro as yet does not have a lot of blood on his hands. He is reasonably confident he could step away and enjoy his Swiss bank accounts without much hassle, in the tradition of Latin American caudillos, left and right. And contrary to his mentor, Hugo Chavez, Maduro may at heart not be such a fanatic lefty. He started his career as a bus driver and union organizer and it’s often speculated his second wife Cilia is more the scolding ideologue in the family. Leaving the Presidential Palace is one way to get this termagant off his back.
There is a long way to go still, but if democracy returns to Venezuela, it would a have a salubrious effect on the rest of the hemisphere; perhaps even leading to changes in the last Marxist holdout, Cuba.
Stranger things have happened. Gamal Nasser and his violent Arab nationalist movement brought ruin across the Middle East for decades, yet his chosen successor, Anwar Sadat, wound up making peace, kicking out the Soviets, and changing history much for the better.
If Maduro were to essentially throw in the towel, it would also tell us a lot about the actual power of Red China. Back in the day, the Soviets had real cash to throw around and subsidize their global ambitions. They could truly buy off whole countries. Xi, and Putin for that matter, really don’t have that kind of juice. They still trade with Venezuela but it’s a one-sided barter system that sucks up what’s left of the oil. No meaningful investment is coming.

No amount of rainbow stickers can get me to actually believe there will be a peaceful transition of power.
